A solution to the duplicating frames issue you mention at 8:36: grab one end of the frame you want to extend, tap a second finger on screen and then drag. That'll allow you to extend the frame you want to whatever length AND it'll push the frames around it so there's no gap. You can see this in action in my tutorial I just posted on my channel (at the 13 min 58 sec mark). Much faster and easier than duplicating. Great video as always! Not sure if this is the case for other people, but when I am extremely zoomed in, so that I can see each individual frame, I only seem to be able to extend the length of the last frame in the sequence. If I try to extend any other, my pencil or finger will just select the frames next to it. I also was able to extend a first or middle frame if I moved the upcoming frames away and made empty space where I could extend the frame I was working on. I think it should just push the following frames forward instead of needing me to make empty space. If you have found a workaround, please share.

If you want to do a "ripple" edit, hold a finger on the screen while changing the length of a frame. The frames to the right will move left or right, staying attached to the right side of the frame you're changing. There doesn't seem to be a way to automatically do this when you cut a frame. But you can get the same effect if you cut a frame, lengthen an adjacent frame to fill the space, then use the "ripple" trick while restoring the frame to its original length, pulling the frames to the right to the left along with it. There should really be a ripple editing mode. In fact, it would make more sense as the default than the way it works now. I mean, why would you _want_ gaps between your frames under most circumstances?

If you create a pixel brush and zoom out and draw it’ll get anti-aliased but if you zoom in enough it’ll remain pixel perfect this is not how it works in procreate, Lines stay pixel perfect when drawn with a pixel brush which is good for filling with color drop. This is important as many animators work with aliased lines for ease of color work and selection without things getting fuzzy. Then I turned on the onion skin (had to research to know where it was), and the brush started delaying a little. Later today I'll play with it a little more, but I hope I don't run into any problems.

I think itd help if they added a guide themselves, just a quick walkthrough of how to use things maybe with an example animation. Really hoping for some more tools soon too as it feels a bit steep going into it at the moment. Like tou said the lasso was what i was looking for until i realised i need to just redraw each part in a different space or put it on its own track but that makes things a lot more complicated and longer to create. I'd like a walkthrough of some of the inssne animations some people have made so far but I assume it's often not just 1 person making them

Been playing with PD for a few hours since yesterday and it feels as if they took the alpha version of Procreate and added an animation suite on top of it, rather than building off of the current version of Procreate. So many QoL features and other settings are missing in Dreams, it doesn't make any sense (Ex: No "tap pen" to swap tools). I understand that we can import from Procreate to Dreams, but the amount of time that takes will add up and it becomes a chore very quickly. I really don't think there is any excuse for the Paint & Draw portion of Dreams to be so lackluster in features.

I've been using it on the 2018 12.9" iPad Pro with 256GB storage and it's doing alright with performance but I definitely notice that my iPad is chugging a bit. There are a few glitchy things and I had 1 crash even though there were only 2 small tacks on the timeline, one being a new empty track. The app is still useable and once I started to get going it adapted a bit but it was enough worth noting! I think this app is mainly for the M1 and M2 family, although can still be used pretty well on older versions, you should expect some glitches on anything older than a 2020 or 2021 model.

Hey Brad, I watched a video earlier showing the repeat frame for X amount of time thing......I believe you just tap and hold the left or right edge of the frame you want to repeat and then drag it out to the number of frames to hold for.
@tovermoran4360 Жыл бұрын
Yeah tapping on a frame in Flipbook to add hold duration would be great! I guess the only way to do it at the moment is go back into Timeline, drag out the duration of the drawing.
@Nightmartlet Жыл бұрын
Yeah right now it's a bit tedious, I'm not sure if I'm doing it wrong, but I can't just drag out a frame to adjust its duration if it has other frames after it -- I have to move those frames back before adjusting the target frame's duration. Currently it seems easier to just duplicate the target frame since that will insert frames right after the original.

So I was trying to do an animation of my OC just yawning from her front facing profile view and for the longest time I couldn’t figure out how to get to an option where I see the previous drawing frame on a blank one just so it’s consistent with the movement. Turns out you can’t do that, you just have to do something obscure like hit the running time clock to view your onion skins. Take it from me (someone who barely knows how to animate), Procreate Dreams has GREAT potential but is STILL going to take some getting used, but that’s OK. This functions fine on 9th gen iPad but it crashes often (one or two times per hour for the most part). With all the missing features it is easier to do simple frame by frame animations in procreate. Though it is more fun in dreams. Don't like the idea of having two apps it is a hassle to move files between the two.
@poldos0964 Жыл бұрын
One of the challenges is to rig a character. The only way I found is to place each limb in a different track and to then group the tracks to make one limb's movement dependent on the other one (eg. lower arm and upper arm). That is not as straightforward as in Toonsquid, in which one can easily create hierarchies and position pivot points etc...

The thing with this app and most other animation apps is that they're not truly Adobe animate replacements as many people claim they are. If all you need to do is make stuff move, then that's great, but there are a bunch of other things that only animate does, and seemingly no other app wants to recreate those features.

Easing settings are like three clicks deep, popup menus seem unpredictable, no easing curves editing, no copying of keyframes, no looping (which I thought was in the promotional materials?) When moving/scaling by keyframe it’s unpredictable whether my selection scales by one axis, scales by both axes, or moves. Frame by frame is definitely super smooth, but not mainly what I was looking for. I’m sticking by it but I do recognize the experience of frustration at this point

20$ is not THAT much, but I agree with your feeling of being a bit disappointed that they left out some key things from Procreate (Autoshape, Stabilisation, Brush customisation, selections) that I can not really use it for drawing as much as I would like. I've only had it a day, but I vastly prefer ToonSquid at this point. I thought the timeline looked simple from various KZbin pre-release hype videos, but find it cumbersome and feature-lacking in practice. I have never been a huge ProCreate fan, finding it to lack many features and require many extraneous taps and swipes to access others, and the problem seems to be tenfold worse here. Since using both in tandem seems like the intended use case to get high-quality art in Dreams, I don't see myself switching over any time soon. Even though I was skeptical I would entirely switch over, I was still hoping to incorporate the couple things Dreams can do for now (effects) into my workflow by exporting my TS animation layers to Dreams to add blurs / warping (and send them back to TS to finish). However, from everything I've read Dreams can't export with transparency. If they add that, then at least I can get some use out of it.

11:44 i don’t think saying you should but it is good advice if it being only $20 is part of the reason you say it, and the reason i say this is because the price changes based on localisation, not just because of currency conversion but also because of market they might convert the currency and then raise the price some more. For example, I assume you mean it’s $20 USD, which would be like $28 in my local currency, but it’s not $28, it’s $40 which for me just isn’t worth it. That’s not to say that it’s not worth it for others, but there’s a big difference between $28 and $40 for some. And if it were $25-28 then sure, I’d definitely get it, but $40 is just too expensive for. However, all that being said, this review was insightful and has opened the possibility to me getting procreate dreams further down the line when I have a better income etc. so thank you nonetheless for this review

Hey Brad, thanks for all the videos you've made about Dreams as it rolls out. I've been eagerly awaiting the launch but have hit some issues with my 2nd gen iPad Pro (12") on Day One. I hadn't realized the limitations on the number of content tracks (only 50) and no 4K. And the difficulty in actually moving elements of a drawing around is a drag, Procreate is just so much better for creating images I have been meaning to upgrade my iPad, so I guess I have an excuse, but like you, I have struggled with not having a proper manual - I imagine they will put one out that is as great as the one they have for Procreate. Bottom line, though: I love drawing with Procreate on the iPad, but this interface feels very cumbersome - I think I may end up returning to Procreate, After Effects, FCPX, Apple Motion, and Character Animator to bring my drawings to life.

So, you got the proper version app early but didn't ask them for a manual cheat sheet? 😉 At 6:50 you said you missed a feature to move, scale, rotate etc. I have seen a tutorial video where this feature was demonstrated in Procreate. I don't remember where the feature is embedded as I have not opened the app yet, but it's there 😀 Edit: Should have watched further. So from what I understand from your statement is, the moving, rotating feature is still too limited for your work flow, especially since a selection tool is missing. Hopefully they will add those in future, also with clipping masks/alpha lock. I hear those are missing too currently.
