The answer is to buy both. I enjoy using Procreate more than the Affinity Apps as it's a much more pleasurable experience...however, the Affinity Designer/Photo just do stuff that other apps on iPad don't do, so getting all 3 is worth it if you don't want to be limited. The prices are extremely cheap compared to what apps like this would traditionally cost on a desktop.
@ArtandDesign5 жыл бұрын
That's a very good point Qdouble. These apps are extremely cheap for what they offer. We are living in a great time :)
@itscloudyinside5 жыл бұрын
Do the apps charge extra (as in in-app purchases) for brushes and other features? Or is everything included with the base price?
@jiminslostjams3004 жыл бұрын
@@itscloudyinside Well, as I know you _can_ buy different themed brushes for ex: sketch brushes, ink brushes, tattoo brushes, nature brushes and a lot more but you also get the classic ones after the purchase. As in procreate after you purchase it for only 10 dollars i think? (Correct me if I'm wrong) you'll get tons of brushes, with different textures, performances and much more. I just got my iPad and I'll probably buy procreate since I already have affinity designer and photo on my computer. And also I see tons of people work in procreate soooo yeah.
@itscloudyinside4 жыл бұрын
@@jiminslostjams300 thanks for the input. so you're saying that procreate also has microtransactions but with the variety, you don't see a need for the extra brushes?

@@itscloudyinside Yes, I don't really think it is neccessary to buy them, also you can make your own brushes too.

This is kind of like comparing Illustrator to Photoshop. They're two different kinds of programs, although there's some overlap. Procreate wins overwhelmingly in terms of performance and quality. Designer wins overwhelmingly in terms of features, functions, and the amount of ground that it seeks to cover.
@ArtandDesign5 жыл бұрын
Good point. Affinity covers a lot of ground with the features that they offer. However, the features may not necessarily be optimised for iPad use in many cases. Procreate has a different attitude. Procreate doesn't add a feature unless they know they can make it intuitive to use.
@thirtyfiveedu88835 жыл бұрын
Designer vs Procreate. This is exactly like comparing graffiti art to commissioned murals. One is based on whims expressed in a hurry with/without permission, the other is the same thing with a paycheck and a ‘get out of jail free’ card. The resulting images can be identical, the only difference is what the undo history and layer stack looks like.

Procreate is an app for drawing. AD is like a full featured mashup of photoshop and illustrator for iPad. U can draw on both, a bit better on procreate. But u can do many many more with affinity designer. Designing websites and apps, illustrating complex shapes in both vectors and rasters. Its more suited for professionals it can be ur one app that does it all, just the iOS file system is a bit annoying

I have found the desktop videos of affinity designer helpfull. I was going to get coreldraw as I have started doing vinyl tshirts and signs, but I have totally found everything I need in affinity designer. Your video tutorial would be great as I know how in depth you dive into it. Affinity designer is a huge app to learn and definitely needs someone to show every little detail. They should pay you lol. Oh and thanks for the help with procreate 👍😇

Which is better, a Miata, or an F150? Kinda depends what you wanna do with it, doesn't it? I guess lots of folks - new to digital art - don't know Vector from Raster/Bitmap. But I think it'd be good to put those two words in the title, because these apps' main differences boil down to their Raster/Vector natures.

Excellent! I found your video because I miss antique Macromedia Freehard so much for its ease in handling text; I can’t afford Illustrator and Photoshop subscriptions. Pages can’t even kern text, as far as I can see. I need a vector based app that attaches text to a curve, kerning, automatic resizing of text boxes , sideways text, and can import hand drawn calligraphy to vector. Would love Designer tutorials; I like your approach. Surprised you didn’t compare Procreate to Affinity Photo.🎨✍🏽👏

Thanks Thorgeir- I really like your clear explanations. I want to know how to go from Procreate to scalable vector graphics (for example for large print projects) Is Affinity Designer better than procreate for this?
@ArtandDesign6 жыл бұрын
Hi Eimear, thank you for the kind feedback and welcome to the channel🙏 To answer your question: In theory yes, scalable vector graphics are better with regards to large scale prints. However, vector graphics are limited in other ways compared to rasterized graphics. In some ways, it's empowering, but may be limiting in other ways such as blending textures, liquifying and morphing the image in various ways. That's why knowing how to use both programs gives you as an artist/designer a clear advantage 😀 We never know, maybe Adobe will swoop in and solve both use cases. 🙃
@ArtandDesign6 жыл бұрын
Adding to this: Depending on how large you plan to make your print, you won't see a difference unless Procreate can't create a big enough canvas. Procreate can create pretty large canvases though, at the cost of # of layers you can work with.

I wouldn't even compare the two because they're two different types of programs -- I use both to complement one another, as they're my two preferred apps. Affinity Designer is better for vector designs, and to my knowledge Procreate is not capable of vector designs. Affinity can do regular non-vector pixel painting like Procreate, but it is not as robust as Procreate in that area. Both are great.

If you save a project as a Photoshop file with layers, then Procreate can open it, as long as it doesn't exceed the limits of Procreate document sizes, layers, etc. Procreate sets hard limits on those things. Other apps don't so you could make a document in other apps that won't open in Procreate because it's too big or has too many layers.
