PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR -- Episode 49 -- Recorded January 20, 2018 for release on January 23, 2018. "TAJ MAHAL OPEN."
One of our bigger fields as 21 kids -- 17 "Bigs" and 4 "Littles" -- went to the starting gate in a two-game qualifier trying to make the show. The top 2 "Littles" advanced to a Championship Match, and the top 5 "Bigs" advanced to a full, four-match stepladder. So on this week's show, a total of FIVE matches (instead of the usual four). It's an action-packed episode of PRODIGY as several new faces bowled in this week's qualifier and two made the show as first-timers.
Plus, the potential of a PRODIGY first! We've had two brothers win on PRODIGY before as Matt and Nick have both claimed championships on the show. But they won on different dates. On today's show, with two divisions -- the "Bigs" and the "Littles" -- two brothers, one in each division, are in the field and will by trying to become the first brothers ever to both win on PRODIGY on the same show.
USBC Silver Certified Coach Randy Brown is your play-by-play voice. This episode was shot at Brunswick Zone Roswell in Roswell, Georgia.
Our field was comprised of 21 kids from these bowling centers:
5 from Brunswick Zone Roswell
8 from Brunswick Zone Lilburn
4 from AMF Woodstock
2 from Stars and Strikes Woodstock
1 from Stars and Strikes Cumming
1 from Brunswick Zone National (in Augusta, Georgia)
As always, your comments are welcome. But we must insist that you keep your remarks positive. We will not tolerate negative comments aimed at insulting or degrading any of these kids. Remember, the mission of PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR is to "Celebrate Junior Bowling while we Elevate Junior Bowlers." If you have a criticsim of one of these young people, make it in a way that is helpful, not hurtful, and we'll all be good. Let's try to lift these kids up, not beat them down.
The producer wishes to thank you for supporting PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR by watching our videos, by giving them a thumbs-up, by subsribing to our channel, and by sharing our videos with your friends on social media.
We recommend to all fans of PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR to join our Facebook group. Yep, it's called "PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR." If you want a Kegel pattern that’ll drive all the Brunswick Zone Roswell league bowlers insane, have them bowl on Red Square next week (for PBT that is). It’s a 1:1 ratio pattern, so no room for error.

If we ever get someone working the lane machine that knows how and is willing to program different patterns into the Kegel machine, I'd love to feed them some different patterns. As it is, I'm not sure anyone there knows how. They can call up one of the patterns that's programmed in (it has quite a few). But I've never heard of any one of our current staff of lane guys programming in a pattern that isn't already in the machine. I wish I knew how. I'd do it myself. But I'm not actually an employee of the bowling center, and I don't think they'd be real happy with me futzing around with their $30,000 lane machine. Probably for good reason.

Great show as always! Also, one thing i was hoping you'd point out with Bryant in Game 1 of the Bigs is his backswing. It's heading inside of his body, but the ball is just able to dodge the gutter and come back. I've even seen something similar to it from a much earlier episode (I don't recall what it was). Maybe straighten it out to keep the ball and swing on a consistent plane?

Another great episode. My question for this week is how many bowlers do you have in your league (and do both varsity and JV bowl in the same session)? I ask because when I bowled juniors, our league had to have separate bowling for varsity and JV (as it was only a 12 lane house).
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 жыл бұрын
Ours is a 40 lane house, so we're able to have both leagues bowl at the same time. We have four teams of 3-4 kids each in the JV. Eight teams in the Varsity. They all bowl at the same time. The Varsity takes the high end of the house (up to about 34) and the JV has the lanes just to the left of the Varsity. (We block out the last three pair for PRODIGY.) The league bowls on a house shot.

David Talkington - David, thank you for your kind words and your continued support of PRODIGY. The only reason I don’t do the ball listings is that it would be a hard thing to manage, especially during the event itself, where I don’t have an assistant to help me collect that information. I’m kind of busy doing other things. Then there is the whole matter of these kids each carrying 4, 5, 6 balls. And even if I wrote down the ball names, I’m frankly not familiar enough with all the different ball manufacturers’ different balls to be able to identify them on sight when a player throws one. I play Storm equipment, and to be honest, I haven’t bought a new piece in almost two years (I’ve been fighting through some lingering injuries, so I haven’t bowled that much), so I’m probably not even that familiar with Storm’s latest stuff, let alone everybody else’s. So it’s just a harder thing to manage than it might seem like it would be. That’s why I haven’t done it.

BrownswickBowling No problem Randy...I should have realized that....Wow..5-6 bowling balls each...incredible how the game has changed..I'm showing my age here but you understand..I only had 1 ball until I got out of high school ... Started a lane ball in the bantam leagues....then an ebonite polyester ball (green..whoo hoo )when I was in 5th...then an a few pro Classic in 6th....then a white dot..until I got out of high school...those where trade in for new...plus cash of course...I didn't bowl for a couple years...then worked at a 36 lane bowling alley and used my discount to purchase several balls...ended up with about 5 balls including the New AMF ANGLE...I was saving up for Dexters when I got laid off...I sold my equipment because the were shutting that bowling alley down...course we are talking about the old style lanes....my home town had a 16 lane house!, But they kept it immaculate ....they also used the heavier pins too... Never a 300 game until 1988ish...then only a few...don't know now.....anyway thanks for the answer....with that many bowling balls I wouldn't keep track either 😳😳😃.. Hope your week has been great...hang in there my friend!

They'll be back on the show as soon as they bowl well enough in the qualifier to make the top five. FYI: In the new show that should be available for viewing later tonight (1/30/2018), Logan didn't stay to bowl PRODIGY. So when you don't see him on the show, it's because he didn't participate. He opted instead to sit out, not wanting to "overbowl" prior to a big tournament the next day. (Interestingly, one of the kids who did bowl PRODIGY that day went on to WIN that big tournament the next day.)

one dollar - Ever since I started making these videos a year and a half ago, I've always tried to make the background color on the player's scoresheet be the color of their shirt so you could connect the score with the player. Or, in some cases, if both players are wearing the same color shirt, I might use an accent color that's somewhere on their shirt. This has been the standard practice since before this series began. Even some of my earlier videos of me bowling with friends employed this same practice. And you never noticed? I've even mentioned it on some of the shows.

@ProdigyBowlersTour

The time to do this would be during qualifying. In this case, that would have meant getting all 21 kids to let me take a picture if every one of the balls they were carrying, which, in some cases, meant as many as 6. Do you have any idea what a massive undertaking that would be? It’s never going to happen.

BrownswickBowling im saying the ball they are actually throwing at the time they are bowling. Not their arsenal. Take a pic on your phone while the ball is on the rack and input it during editing. I watch a guy with nowhere near the quality of show you are running do it for every tournament he films.

Patrick, I would have no way of knowing which ball they intend to throw during the stepladder finals. So to cover all possibilities, I would need a pic of all the balls in their arsenal...in case they went to something different from what they're throwing in qualifying. In short, I've been asked a hundred times about including information about what ball the kids are throwing. These kids all carry no fewer than three balls, and some carry as many as six (or more). Some of them add new balls to their arsenal so rapidly, it's impossible to keep up with it. Plus, whenever we have visitors come over to our center to bowl PRODIGY, there's a whole new group of kids whose arsenals I'm not at all familiar with. I shoot this show by myself and do all the editing and everything. There's no assistant to the producer here. I do everything. Taking on additional tasks like this make the show a bit unweildy. Plus, being a coach, I'm far more interested in how they're throwing it than I am in what they're throwing. It's just not going to happen. That is, unless you want to come down here and handle that part of it.
@ProdigyBowlersTour
@ProdigyBowlersTour 6 жыл бұрын
Dude, you don't understand. I have no way of knowing which ball they're going to throw. They could change mid-game. The only way to cover all options is to photograph ALL of them that they carry. Plus, I'm just not that familiar with all the ball manufacturers' product lines enough that I would recognize which ball they're throwing on sight. Let me say it again: This is not going to happen. I have other things I have to do while the play is underway. Among other things, I'm making mental notes for when the time comes to edit the show. I can't be off photographing a bunch of bowling balls that may or may not come into play. But thanks for the suggestion. If you want to come down here and manage this, feel free. I'd love to have the help.

Sam Li Jie - This is s rule I have been working to change to protect the purest form of bowling. The rules very clearly are written so no interpretation is required, but in today's type of bowlers coming up the ranks the rules need a look at. My case is simple. If I as a left handed single hand bowler was to adjust mid game, mid series or for even 1 ball and add my right hand to my release in ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM I would be DQ'D for changing my bowling release hand. I watched it happen at nationals this year, thankfully not to me. A right handed guy who is like me a power cranker with super high amount of power and revolutions kept missing the 3 9 spare by chopping it. I over heard his team mates say "use the left hand to take the turn out like you do at the house, one even pointed to a two handed bowler who would go to a massive back swing to power the ball when he left anything other than a single pin spare, and he did it over and over and over with no reactions from the "USBC rule judges" behind each set of lanes. Thus this guy in the 3rd game 8th frame leaves another 3 9 sleeper double wood spare. This time he lines up normally with his strike ball and everything Is the exact same EXCEPT his left hand he removes after lining the ball up pre approach is kept on the ball and he is swing is shorthanded as he has his left hand on the pin mark and when he released the ball his left hand stops the ball from turning so hard he over hooks it and all the sudden the ball flips and rolls straight into the 3 hitting the 9 and the SAME two handed bowler who has changed his primary position and release over 20 times instantly claims illegal release from his one handed main release. Claiming he added and changed his 1 hand release to a 2 hand to make the shot easier for him and that is the same as a lefty leaving a 7 pin and using his right hand to swing the ball to pick it up and going back to a left handed release from there. The USBC judge instructed the score operation center to give the bowler a F for the entire frame and a warning was issued. This Double F cost this team everything as 3 of the 5 had 750 plus series and they st the time ended up 12 pins out of 1st. I waited for the 2 handed bowler to go and his very next frame he left a hard 9 as his angle was so sharp. I thought I would be the guy to protest but over 30 other 1 handed bowlers jumped up and claimed "illegal release, he started with two handed he must throw each and every ball the same way PERIOD, and the 2 handed bowlers all said the same thing, dropping a hand isn't an advantage it's a disadvantage as they get the revolution count and overall hook and aim from the second hand. So the judge simply said no foul, and refused to discuss it. Over 14 teams all filed a complaint against the 2 handed bowler who would end up with a 730 in singles with 6 spares picked up using an "illegal release". So to try to teach someone this would be the same as me to say I am going to learn how to bowl with each hand and both... that way I will start the game two handed and then depending on the spare I need to pick up I will simply remove one hand and claim no advantage was gained... Two handed bowlers jumped into the spotlight when Jason Belmonte became famous and trendy. At first I didn't care about it, but now I watch these youth trying to do this and using the old rule system they are learning how to win by manipulating the rules and when another traditional bowler tries to adjust to help keep up with the rule benders they cry foul. I even have a two handed bowler on my main team and we argue about it often. I throw a strike ball @22mph with 600plus revolutions on it and always (unless a long 48ft sport shot ) go from the 25 to outside the 3 with EVERY ball I throw using just my left hand. I have picked up the 7-10 over 50 times this season alone as I am able to top 35mph with a 15lb 14oz Motiv Venom ball and have even hit the 7 so hard I sent it out to the approach deck as the gate was slow to drop, but if I was allowed to add my right hand to the same release to pick it I am able to destory the pins. While practicing the big 4 (yes I have them set up for 36 frames and work on picking it) Using my same release but never letting my right hand to leave the surface of the ball I am able to take all the rotation out of the ball and cause it to skid the entire length only to flip right as it contacts the pin causing the pin to "jump" straight into the air hitting the pin setter and sending it all over the place, and topping 40mph this way I normally end up snapping the pins into 2 at the neck... Long story but your comment got me fired up again. USBC is working with the PBA on this issue and I hope to bring it to s national debate soon as I am working with the local college and sports science Doctoral candidate on this thesis for bowling and this exact issue.

Heyo Randy, I have a question. My coach doesn’t have an answer because she has never run into this problem but what should I do if my hands are getting sweaty when I’m bowling and the fan on the ball return isn’t strong? I was bowling league this past Sunday and they didn’t have the ac on and the fans are weak so me and the rest of my teams hands were sweating real bad and our fingers kept sticking

Chum - First, make using a rosin bag part of your pre-shot routine, whether or not you have working hand blowers. I like the large “Puff Balls” by Master Industries (a division of Storm). They’re cheap, they last a long time, and most pro shops carry them. Second, a portable battery-operated fan is your friend. They make ‘em a little smaller than this, too. But here’s a 10-inch one...cheap...at Walmart. www.walmart.com/ip/O2COOL-10-inch-Battery-or-Electric-Portable-Fan/49332866

Correct. Didn't affect the outcome, though. And the scoring was correct inside the bowling center. Just a typing error when I was creating the graphics for the show. It happens.

I'm sure he's not real happy about it, either. But I'm sure he'll be back. He's too good not to be. Plus, he's been bowling really well lately. Just hasn't had the magic touch on these patterns we've used recently.

i dont mind the occasional 2 hander but it erks me how almost everyone under the age of 12 is a 2 hander now a days.

You need to get over it. It's here to stay. Twenty-five years from now, pretty much everyone under 30 will be bowling that way. Fifty years from now, people will be wondering why we ever bowled one-handed.

And you forgot to mention........how everyone under the age of 12 that's a 2-hander is getting more revs than you do. THAT'S why they do it. If I could generate enough speed throwing it two-handed, I would switch. But I can't. It requires a degree of flexibility that I haven't had in quite a few years (and quite a few pounds).
