Today we have the wonderful opportunity to try out a brand new plugin, the smart:reverb from Sonible! I am very excited about this plugin because Sonible’s plugins tend to be very intuitive and produce great results. So we are going to open it up and put it on a mix to try it out in all the different applications I would usually use a reverb!
The Sonible smart:reverb is an AI-powered plugin that delivers a tailored reverb by aligning its processing to the characteristics of the input material. This allows you to get a custom-tailored reverb in seconds, and quickly find a reverb that fits your vision.
With just one click, smart:reverb analyzes the source material and creates a reverb from scratch. That reverb is custom-fitted to that signal, which helps to eliminate typical reverb issues like disturbing resonances or muddy reverb tails right from the start. This plugin also provides you with an interactive view of the reverb’s anatomy, which allows you to adjust it where you need to.
After testing out this plugin on a mix, I can see that this is one I might reach for to recreate natural room tones. With many reverb plugins, I feel that what they give me is completely over the top, when all I really want to do is create space and depth. Often I am getting DI’s or virtual instruments that don’t have any spatial feel about them, and I want to use a reverb to give them space and feel like they are put in a place. The way that the smart:reverb creates custom reverbs for each signal gives a natural sounding reverb that I really like. I think this would be the one I would reach for to recreate natural space!

For orchestra I've started using the 'main pair' in Exponentials R2 for the decca mic in the sample libraries, and the 'spot mic' for the close mics. Any single reverb never seems to sound as good as using two.

Hey Warren, i downloaded earlier today and of course tried it out heavily.I had the exact same impression of this reverb. I also changed my personal template to put it in the places of my short reverbs which i use to create the feeling of a natural room. This plugin is very good and sound extremly nice as well. I personally love the option of altering the decay frequncy to my needs. I see me already overuse this feature haha. have a wonderful day

Thanks for the video Warren. I have been playing about with this for a few days. I love their Smart comp and Smart EQ and have a few of their other plugins. Reverb sounds great as a natural sounding reverb and may replace Altiverb for me on a few things. I use a lot of IRs but I like the freedom this gives you to adjust things completely with algorithms. It's definitely not a character reverb and won't be replacing my EMTs and Lexicons any time soon, but definitely agree with you that it's going to become a go-to for natural-sounding spaces. I do find it a little spiky in CPU consumption if I am running a low buffer but to be honest, this is a mixing tool so I would likely be running my buffers up at 1024 anyway. At this setting, there are no audio clicks or pops, but I did find a few at 128 on my Apollo Twin. The interface is easy to look at although I would prefer a few more dials to move rather than click and drag number fields but that's just personal taste. All round a great plugin and has just made it into my regular mix template.

I think of them as different spaces and spring reverb as something unique altogether. These details are often hard to keep when the files are compressed down for YT, always seems like my spaces are getting discarded. So if I play a spring reverb from the amp into my DAW and add a room reverb, it becomes comfortable, very much like a room mic is mixed against the source. Then if I add one of the long tail halls, myself I enjoy the warbelling chorus tails, it begins to take on the feel of being recorded to tape. This is a wonderful way to open a song, but as soon as more instruments join the mix, it all disappears, takes up mix space, and detracts from other parts featuring. So it’s nice to have that tracked as a separate wet effect that can be automated to duck out of the way. For me the Eventide 7000 series and 8000 series units deliver all of the choices, there must be 50 of them, and it’s a lot of work to setup something that quickly disappears later, or is removed for clarity. I would love to see you discuss the 3000 series reverbs, because they were so simple and loaded with character, they often survive the mix because of their unique personality. You still have the 9000 there, which has over 50 reverbs. It would be cool to see you contrast the 3000/9000 reverbs, because over the course of many years Eventide updated their reverbs significantly. Now you have all of the added delays, pitches, and chorus to make them really unique. Thank you Warren for so much incredible content, you are the go-to channel for audio. I can think of no other person who has contributed so much to the music community. My highest regards, James.

I've been playing around with this reverb for about a week (beta testing), which has allowed the "new car smell" to dissipate enough to objectively consider if it's a tool I'm likely to use over the long haul. When I first started integrating it into a few projects I thought "nice, super easy to dial in the sound I want, sounds really good in a utilitarian way". After a week of trying to break it (functionally and tonally) I can tell you it takes effort to make it sound bad (it took pushing it into the corner of artificial/lush at high density, with max reverb time and no pre-delay). I especially like it on recorded acoustic guitar, bass, and vocals but also found it useful on virtual instruments. So, a week later I'd add CPU efficient, versatile, and extremely intuitive to my initial thoughts. I know we live in an age of needing to qualify our statements, so no... I do not receive any compensation or benefits from Sonible for my feedback. If I want this plugin then I will need to purchase it just like everybody else. So am I going to purchase it? I have plenty of high quality reverbs but I like the way smart:reverb effortlessly integrated into my workflow, love it on vocals/guitar, and I think it's perfectly suited to be my work horse precision reverb because of its flexibility. So yes, I'm going to buy it.

I like to second Matthews' experience he share with us. Downloaded the trial version this morning after I saw Warrens' review and gave it a go. It ended in I, bought it. Due my testing I really like the 'fusion' of a guided , fast find a reverb/room for a track, by the learn function but it also keeps all doors open to manipulate the reverb. It covers most reverb types someone needs but it is also great for sound design, that's what I like. It will be keeper for a long time. A short last word on the GUI.. I've never seen a reverb plug in, representing your tweaks on the parameters in such a nice way. You can see the atmosphere particels being turning around with your tweaks. Great reverb. Thanks for this review video Warren.

Wel some in and output control and meters are still absent. No predelay sync, also small reverb time are difficult on the linear scale. In my test runs is has a strong metallic sound. Smart comp is a great example of sonible skills. I think this Plugin is either hasty released or not diverse tested. Great potential but not replacing my lexicon.

Hi Warren. You should look into something called RTX Voice. It's a noise reduction app for gaming / voice chat but it's by far one of the best noise removal tools I've ever used. It uses AI as well. I used it to remove noise from a source that was near destroyed, full of noise. It managed to make it significantly more clear, even more then izotope RX. Since it's not a plugin I had to do some routing but the result was amazing.

Love the channel Warren! AI is the most overused and misused term of 2020. In most cases these things are human programmed responses to certain conditions. If you give it the same information and it does the same thing every time it's likely not AI. If it learned how you changed it's programmed responses and applied that info to future mixes, then maybe you could call it AI.

I certainly hope you had the chance to learn more about this before giving up on it. It was hard to watch, especially the vocal section where you forgot to gave the plugin learn the vocal sound so you were listening to the guitar process on the lead vocal. You avso didn’t get to the upper controls where you can control frequency and reverb time, not being critical, you did better than I did on day one. Actually much better than I did. The clarity control is amazing and makes this super transparent. It is easy to give up on a plugin but I would hope you spent more time to get to more features and sound possibilities, it is an amazing tool and the clarity tool keeps the verb from masking the input signal. Letting vocals pop. Thank you for the great content.

must say it seams to be very poorly explored by the pros. few talking about this one. probably out of fear to sound different than others. the go-to "industry standard" reverbs are far from realistic after all. not saying you can't design all kinds of artificial reverbs with this one, you obviously can. but the pros are always after "that sound" it seams. there is few space for experiments nowadays.

Warren, I have a philosophic remark. The phrase "creating space" is sort of wrong. Actually, what you do with reverbs and delays is restricting space, i.e. creating finite rooms of various size. When there is no reverb or delay whatsoever, you have perfect, endless space.

Hmmm, I resisted posting a question here until I'd seen the whole video, but now I have, I'll ask it anyway. How would this work on a bus, when you're actually using the reverb across a number of tracks? I see how this works as an insert (because it's "tuned" to the source) but does it still work as a "general purpose" send verb, or is that not the point?
@lairdey
@lairdey 3 жыл бұрын
I’m speculating of course. Haven’t demoed it yet, but I would imagine that’s what the universal algorithm is for. Sonible’s demo video basically says that.

Hi James, that's actually one of the uses I'm thinking! This to me seems to be one of most 'natural sounding' room like verbs, not hyped like a lot of the standard verbs. That would allow me to add subtle room verbs to many sounds, just like you're proposing here.
@adijames
@adijames 3 жыл бұрын
Produce Like A Pro That makes complete sense. I started thinking about CPU usage if it was used as an insert - which got me thinking about buses. A lovely natural sounding, unobtrusive general purpose verb is actually (for me at least!) quite hard to place - so I’m going to try the demo and see if it helps me. Thank you!

I have plugins which know when they are inserted and when they are on a send and adjust dry/wet accordingly. This ain't so smart. Plus, most reverbs start with a default setting you adjust as needed or go to a preset and adjust from there. I see no other difference with this plugin. That being said, the only thing that makes no sense is the AI part of this. I wonder if they would offer it with or without the AI portion? The interface as very intuitive, which is very cool. The only thing which seems superfluous is the AI.

This lady singing in this video example is forcing her vibrato too much. Why? Not every single prolongated phrase needs vibrato. Essentially she has nice smokey grunge voice/vocal. Other than that this plugin is really nice done. Probably the safe bet of purchase. Deoming in progress.

@@an5683 I always though the definition of AI would be a program that without you telling it what to do (in terms of worksteps) figures out a solution for a problem by itself. I have very basic programming experience, but it seems this plugin simply has a list of if statements that it goes through when you feed it with tasks/audio input. As in-> you tell it you want your reverb to make the sound warmer. The programmer wrote definitions of what "warm" means, the input signal get analysed and an EQ curve is adjusted so the output fits the definition of "warm". Now you can write your definitions very precisely etc.etc. and it seems like the Plugins "thinks" on its own, when in reality it just exactly performs tasks when and how the programmer told it to. But as I said I got not that much knowledge, so my understanding is probably wrong. Or I simply misunderstood what AI means.

@@cheesesoup2894 Simply speaking, when creating those AI programs, developers feed thousands of examples to the AI algorithm, telling it, that is a good example, we want the result like it, and that is a bad example, we don't want the result to be like it. The AI role in this it to figure out by itself, why this is bad and this is good, and create some sort of rules that lead tto creating a good result. That machine learning. Machine learns by itself, that's it. You don't tell it, this is bad because of that, and this is good because of that, you just show. Like show don't tell. Hope that wasn't too vague.

I'd like to see/hear some vids done with something more original sounding as far as song choices and production values. For me, the songs are too often insipid, radio-ready 4 chord carbon-copy clones of each other, this one being no exception. I like the techniques but I hate the music. Just boring, predictable schlock. My apologies to the artist but it is what it is.

@@queenpurple8433 Why? Can't the producer chose what he or she is going to work on? Isn't it the producer's job to develop a unique style for each song? Does the world really need yet another mass-produced, grid-aligned, groove-less wall-of-sound, formula-oriented pop clone? No disrespect to Warren, I've learned a lot from his vids, but sometimes I have a hard time getting through them to the end because the music is so vapid. Some songs are like beautiful paintings, some are nothing more than wallpaper. This falls into the wallpaper category. Seems like a lot of work for something so disposable. I'm old. I started out in the 70s working on a Teac 3440 4-track. I obviously didn't have the luxury of 18 tracks for drums, doubling every guitar part and having every imaginable effect at my fingertips. Samples? What samples? It was all about the song and the performance. Either I'm just getting senile and cranky or there's something sorely missing from modern music production. I'm betting on the latter.

Meg Watts I completely agree with your stance on the music, it is lifeless and I too would like to see/hear work on a broader range of songs, but I still think most people who are starting out are going to have to work on music like that from their clients. Even super well known and well off producers have had to and still sometimes have to work on shitty pop music in order to make their living. Sucks that many people don’t even have the attention span for a melody that doesn’t repeat every second nowadays. I’m jealous you got to work on music in those times, I imagine it was a beautiful time to be alive

@@queenpurple8433 Yeah, I have good memories of it all. Now, of course, the possibilities are endless but it's a double-edged sword. When something doesn't sound right the tendency is to grab a plugin in the often misguided belief that it will solve all your problems. I (we) had to make sure the problems weren't there to begin with. Today, the tempo's wonky? Quantise to the grid! The part's hard to play? Get it played once decently, quantise and loop it! Drums sound shitty? Grab some samples! And the end-result is a bunch of metronomic, generic crap that makes me wanna blow chunks. Listeners have been subjected to this mulch for the last 20-30 years and have been pretty much conditioned to like it. All part of the dumbing-down of society in general. You have to ask yourself, are any of these productions going to stand the test of time? I say, nyet. And, yes, I'm off on an uncontrolled yet somehow justifiable rant. Please just tune me out if you don't like it. Like I said, I'm old and cranky.
