These are very valid points, and I appreciated them (to a large degree). But it wasn't until beginning your course that I truly began to absorb the gravity of the importance of vocals with much more deliberate understanding or have approaches to implementing sets of techniques to treat treat & mix vocals effectively & thoughtfully. Thank you for continuing to teach so many of us with your amazing content.

This something i have been wondering when i listen to the likes of chart songs omg. I gotta suggest a video on an overlooked aspect of vocals which is the production. I came to realise this from a video that Nick Mavromatis did. Everyone focuses so much on the mixing when it’s only 50% of how to get a good vocal. Check out his episode on vocal production!

Excellent video on the vocals. S1 6 is pretty powerful, and I'm still only on the free Artist edition my USB interface netted me. I'll confess I'm not mixing my projects solely with stock plug-ins as I went out and got a few Waves dynamics, EQ, meter, studio rack, Pulsar Mu and Massive combo which came with Relab's LX480 Essentials reverb free, Tokyo Dawn for a few free versions of dynamics and EQ, D16 free Frontier limiter, some plug-in alliance free, etc. Even so, I agree with you, you can do well with stock plug-ins. PS I've gotta try Red Light Distortion. I've heard the neon light is the secret item that makes it work.
@ProducingInTheBox Жыл бұрын
It’s how you use the tools, not the tools alone! Now I use Slate, UA, Waves and tons of others as well! I just made this video to prove that it’s possible and incredible quality as well. Also, yeah the neon light is like the only thing that makes it work. It’s the magic 😂

@netrobot8337 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the splendid breakdown. But there's one thing I don't understand, since you have already had all the FX on the bus, why do you need to copy them to every track? The signals are going to go through the FX on each track and then on the bus. Is it duplicated?
@ProducingInTheBox Жыл бұрын
Using one compressor to mix lots of vocals won’t react the same way as 1 compressor and 1 vocal! I wanted the compression to be triggered ONLY by the individual tracks. And the bus “glues” things together!

Hey Andrew, I had seen a video about stacking compressors where the agressive one is first. Would that work as well ? Or is it better doing aggressive compressor 2nd
@ProducingInTheBox2 жыл бұрын
It’s a stylistic choice! I prefer the aggressive one second. I want to control the peaks before doing anything else!
@sgg69272 жыл бұрын
@@ProducingInTheBox Thanks Andrew. Another question not necessarily related to the video. Hopefully not a dumb question but I noticed on the vocal tracks looks like recorded in stereo ? Did the vocalist sing into 2 mics ?
@ProducingInTheBox2 жыл бұрын
@@sgg6927 nope! I have a stereo channel (for stereo plugins I might add) but have a mono input!
@DeltaWhiskeyBravo13579 Жыл бұрын
@@sgg6927 FWIW it's pretty crazy that "some" rules don't seem to apply when mixing in the box. Stereo being one in particular. My Studio One DAW gets audio this way: live church sound to mono mic channels to the audio mixer, then from an aux master stereo mix to studio 68c USB interface, Studio One DAW, 1 dry stereo input that sends to a stereo FX channel where my surgical and broad EQs go to several serial compressors plus saturation and de-esser, and the original input 1/2 dry send to a Delay/Reverb and ducking compressor, and finally input 1/2 sends to a stereo widener with EQ, then the master bus with my meters and D16 Frontier limiter. My point is if you manipulate mono inputs correctly then you can get stereo out.

@ProducingInTheBox7 ай бұрын
In studio one I can separate them so if I make changed to the lead vocal it doesn’t change the plugins on the others! But yes I agree with you haha! I’ve been there
@jspacone2 жыл бұрын
I was kind of surprised - I would have expected the EQing and series compression to just be on the vocal bus, rather than each individual track.
@ProducingInTheBox2 жыл бұрын
I like to treat my vocal bus a little bit differently than the individual vocals! A little compression goes a long ways on entire bus because there’s just so much signal hitting that bus
@jasonobrien9651 Жыл бұрын
@@ProducingInTheBox Maybe you address this in another video.... but would you mind elaborating on your vocal bus compression approach? e.g. ratio, att, rel, total reduction... thanks again for the great vid :)
@azizalami8352 жыл бұрын
I don’t understand why you didn’t just add the plugins in the bus instead of coping them for all the other vocals
@ProducingInTheBox2 жыл бұрын
This is a GREAT question! This is because all of the vocals together will increase the volume and affect the compression differently. If I wanted to compress them and EQ them all at once, I would’ve started right on the vocal bus! Because I want a little bit more control on how the compression hits the main vocal vs the harmonies and BGVs, I added them individually! After I do all that, I will add a compressor to the entire bus sometimes. Only compression a LITTLE bit! Thank you so much for this question!
