About dialogue, it depends what type of genre. If you gonna do an psychological manga thay focused purely on mind games like death note, clever dialogue is very important while if you make a battle series that doesn't have to require that than you don't need as much like that

I find his advice and his approach to writing to be really bare bones and ultilitarian but I think it works. I just think it should make up the core of a story and not be the whole thing. A lot of things he thinks of as "fluff" I think of like...mashed potatoes in a thanksgiving dinner. If your plate is entirely mashed potatoes, that's not satisfying. You're just going to make yourself sick on mashed potatoes. You need some kind of meat to make it an actual meal. The meat of your story should be the plot and if "fluff" is getting in the way of the plot, it's just fat on the meat. But if you have a solid plot, any extra stuff you add is just going to be a side dish. You don't need it, it shouldn't be the focus of the meal, but it's still nice to have. Look at Star Wars, 90% of the articles on Wookipedia is just "fluff." But they're still wildly successful movies because the actual plot only focuses on that 10%. Basically, I think it can aid in immersion and escapism to try and flesh out your characters and your world to make them *feel* more real. But Local seems to have something against writing for escapism. Which might come from his experience as a screen writer. As literary writers, we're really only bound by our readers attention but everything a screen writer puts down has to translate to the screen which means time and money. That's why novels can have characters like Tom Bombadil and Peeves The Poltergeist while their movie adaptations don't. Because when you have a budget, you need to focus on conveying your message and little if anything else. But I do agree in his approach of treating narrative as legend and not a window into another world. I think there's two kinds of writers: one that writes to tell stories and one that writes to invent worlds. I find that I'm more of the latter kind but I think we can both learn from each other to make something great.

Heavily disagree with this dude’s opinion on fan fiction. He took the worst of fanfiction (a lot of it written by teenagers) and painted the entire community with it. I could do the same thing with published fiction. Just one more dude bro mocking the starting place of a lot of writers these days. I was all onboard til he went rabid with that take.

Show don’t tell also isn’t about dialogue. It’s about not info dumping in the description portions of a novel.

I like his aggression. Writing stuff because it's fun is no longer acceptable. Writers must strive to improve

It is if it’s just a hobby which it is for a lot of fanfiction writers. They’re younger or beginner writers just having fun. And that’s FINE. In a professional setting of course that changes. But online AO3 and watt pad are not a professional setting lmao

It is acceptable. That is unless you are actually going to strive to write really good books, then you must improve. Anyhow, always have fun if you are just writing as a side hobby.
