His normal videos are not this choppy. He has all of that equipment for intricate decorative inlay’s and setting gems on his more decretive work.

Alec is "just a KZbinr", in most senses. He has tried to sell smithing equipment like anvils, hammers and clothes, but it never worked out for him. To my knowledge he is self taught as (primarily) blade smith, but tries a lot of different metal working, lots of different techniques. He is very inspiring, very energetic and enthusiastic and you are right; he makes the ring like me makes a sword, because that is what he knows best.

He has a proper business, i think I lot of those tools were purchased for detail work on hilts and guards for some sabers he was building at the time. He even did some jewelry settings on those blacksmithing projects. I think the gold was leftover from one of those projects.

If you watch the calvary saber p24, 3:50 in, you’ll see him flush setting. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIXbnIqurt-VeZo He made a signet ring for his father too.

he might use a jeweler friend work shop, because is just like 10000% cheaper to by the ring :))

What do you mean “proper” visit? there are many of us that make jewelry who are not proper professional jewelers (as I’ve heard you say) we make and sell other places and for other reasons. some of us have money to spend some of us have bad eyes and need to spend on “popper” visors. Don’t judge the tools judge the work with the tools.

Hi Chris- I know this is totally off topic(although I liked your critique), but I have an acetyline and oxygen small torch and every time I light the acetyline I get this black smoke that ends up floating around in the air until it falls down like black spider webs all over everything. Any advice on how to stop this? Thanks- I'm glad I found your channel!😊🙏

Hi Andrea, I'm sure Chris will let you know what he thinks but I would say to you from my 20 years in the industry that it would be best to get rid of the Acetylene and switch to propane or natural gas (like a BBQ bottle) Acetylene can be very dangerous and like you stated will leave carbon everywhere, bad for your lungs. We only used to used Acetylene to soot molds for pouring ingots and it was heavily ventilated. Stay safe 😉

Hi! I have never worked with this kind of torch, but from my knowledge of chemistry, I'd say in general when there is not enough oxygen in a burning reaction, it produces carbon as a byproduct (as pure C, not graphite, and definitely not as diamond XD) so I guess try giving it more oxygen?

Acetyline is a dirty gas! I completed a welding course recently using acetyline. As well as filling the air with bits of black soot it burns too hot and too bright for making jewellery. Approx 3000C. If you must use it then wear eyesight guard and have good ventilation!

Yes adding Oxygen stops the air born soot happening

He doesn't edit his own videos, Jamie does that. I agree it is too choppy.

Honestly.... i don't like this review. I don't like the way you judged every little thing and the way this is edited... it's not a tutorial obviously it is supposed to be this way, this is made to be a special video and it was buetifuly done. The ring was perfect doesn't matter how big tools he was using or what material Honestly he did a great job.

He's a professional jeweler. He's just giving his opinion on an amateur jeweler's work. I don't think he was being mean, just honest.

Omg, these were exactly my thoughts when I watched this video for the first time... Like all these fancy tools and the end result is just... Huge Also something else that annoyed me was how much gold the guy turned into dust for this ring! Specially since I saw the video right after I made a loss on a gold ring I made because I filed it too much (it was my first experience with gold)

You can see that he has a blue sheet under the ring to catch the filings

I'll suggest that this is just an example of different video styles for different goals. Your videos are educational and are great. His video was clearly about entertainment and possibly for inspiration. It is actually a ton of work to edit quick segments like that to generate flow and excitement. I prefer your videos for just learning.

I'd much rather have a ring which a professional critic said had some lines on it that are imperceptible to the rest of us, but that was made ENTIRELY by my partner, who is not a jeweller and spent MONTHS practicing jewel and precious metal work on other projects to build up to this ring, *instead of owning some shop bought, non-unique, expensiive but zero effort ring that this random "expert" pedant thinks is better* I don't watch him any more but I used to around the time he made this ring. He said he wanted to learn new skills and began smithing projects with complex gold inlays and with jewels set in them and stuff. That, combined with the fact that his weapons sell for THOUSANDS, even TENS OF THOUSANDS *EACH* when he auctions them after theyre finished, allows him to buy the equipment that youre clearly jealous of (given how you're going at him for it). It must suck to know that he makes more money than you whilst being much more novice at a craft that you've spent your entire life on though, so I understand where the jealousy comes from. It probably also sucks that despite all the years you've put into it compared to the months he has, 99% of people can't tell the difference between your work and his. As for the editing, this video is obviously a big deal for him, not only trying something new but also the video for his fiancée's engagement ring? that's the sort of video you save forever and ever. So he tried a new artsy editing style. It's not for everyone, I get that. But this video is less for his viewers anyway, it's probably more for him and his partner. He posted it, aye (and why not) but let's be real, it's not a video for us, it's a video for them that they allowed us to see. All in all, you are here to criticise, that's what these type of react videos are. But you did it in a rude way, not a constructive way. You did it in an *"I know more than you so I'm superior to you"* type way, and that screams "childish jealousy" to me. As I said, I no longer watch his videos, and based on this, I won't be watching any others of yours either. You're welcome for the 1 view, 1 dislike and 1 comment though. You clearly have the expertise, it could have been 1 subscriber and many views and likes, but your attitude is poor. I may only be one person, and 1 lost sub/view per video is nothing to you. But my guess is many others also chose not to subscribe or watch more because of the way you conduct yourself. Meanwhile, Alec - nice enough not to bash a novice's attempt at a huge life event for someone such as making his own engagement ring - seems to be a bit more successful than you. Think on that constructive criticism. Or don't. What the fuck do I care? Equally, why should you think on it, because who the fuck am I? So do what you like, who cares.

Bro calm down lmao. The criticisms he gave weren’t over the top by any measure. He wasn’t a fan of the fast, snappy editing style, cool, whatever. He’s clearly used to watching more documentary-style jewelry making videos, so the rapid cuts and edits simply makes it hard to properly analyze and comment on the techniques that are being employed in the making of the piece of jewelry. The edits are meant to make the video easier to watch for the larger audience, but for a jeweler that’s attempting to analyze the video it makes it more difficult. And the critiques were very simple and not excessive in any way. He basically said that the tools he was using weren’t necessary for the things he was using them for. Which he’s correct, for anyone watching these videos because they’re an amateur jeweler trying to gain wisdom, he’s letting them know that they don’t need all this equipment and that they can do it with much less and get similar or the same results. Alec is very particular with his work and spends a lot of time making sure it is as perfect as possible, even more so when it’s for his fiancée. So he’s going over the top, using more equipment than he needs just because he has it and it makes it easier, or it looks better, or because he’s simply more familiar with it. And this guy is just saying that it’s not necessary to use those pieces of equipment to get these things done, because he has a lot more jewelry-making experience than Alec. And the only other criticisms he gave were that the ring was quite big, which it is bigger than most other rings, which he knows as a jeweler, and that there were some lines on part of the ring that he couldn’t buff and finish because the diamond was in the way. He just talked about he could’ve hit those part if he did it a little differently. Pretty standard criticisms if you ask me, but I’m not all high and mighty like you so what do I know right?
