A lady I used to work with had a great way to find out which of her kids (or any group of kids) was lying. She would line them up and tell them she could spot the liar by looking at tongues. One at a time she would have each kid show his tongue to her. The kid who was lying wouldn't proudly stick out his innocent tongue out for display but would stick it out, then rapidly pull it back in hopes of hiding his guilt. She said it never failed.

Patrick could see in the second one, obviously. He tied his own blindfold, and I would imagine there's several ways to game that. The first, he was truly blind. He knew what Lisbon, Cho, and Grace were doing because he knows them already....it's a hot reaading. Like a parent saying "Stop that, I can hear your eyes rolling over the phone." Well, that's nonsense, of course, but they know you well enough to call a shot with decent accuracy. Now, Patrick did the "Took a shot, missed." thing in several places in the show. He is very adamant that he doesn't have powers, and I think some of these are there to emphasize that. I akways admired the writing on the show.
@phoenix04013 жыл бұрын
It’s funny. The writing nailed that piece but, for me, really struggled with character development and moving the characters forward. The best example being the interminable red John storyline because (as they eventually demonstrated) they had no idea what to do without him.

Great episode! In the second scene Jane nailed the blindfold drive, because, as you said, it's all trickery, so he really saw the road and could normally drive. In the first scene, he was truly blind. If I remember correctly, Paul Alexander Johnstone was doing a blindfold drive, and Dr. Gatchell exposed it, he was using mohair as his blindfold, as written in H. J. Burlingame's How to Read People's Minds.

I remember I've read something about how the "blind driving" stunt exists before cars and they did it with horses. In that case, of course, it was easier, they could really blindfold the "driver" because all he had to do was to use horses that knew where to go. They trained horses to be very good at it and just teach them the route quietly during the night.

@sapach14063 жыл бұрын
I think that you are right, if Occam's Razor has taught us anything is the fact that the simplest answer is often the correct one. Besides, the shouder tapping seems like a lot of things could go wrong, and memorizing things first to know the distance of objects would only work if Jane knew at what velocity he was driving; adding more variables to the trick.

What you mentioned about the first clip where people observe where others are looking, there was another experiment. So they would test subjects individually without them knowing about it. So the actors were in an elevator and when the subject entered and it started moving, the actors would suddenly all start looking in a random (weird) direction and keep changing it every few seconds. There were instances where the subjects also followed the group because they didn't want to feel as if they are not part of the group or something.

Love these videos! I always figured the driving was tied to their emotional states. With the yellow car, the situation was a light fun trick that he was using the mans pulse to know what to do. However, with the blind one, both Jane and Van Pelt’s emotions were already too hightened with the real danger of being hurt, so the effect would be disrupted by the gun shots.

The trick is he was actually blind in the first but could see in the second. Clearly the trick to the blindfold act is that the mentalist can really see. “Keep your eyes open” is just misdirection - a bigger version of looking at the wrong hand. Because when Mashburn’s life is on the line if he blinks, he’s looking at the road not Jane and can’t see the head movements that give away Jane can see.

I’m wondering if the “looking where a group is looking” has less to do with wanting to be part of the group, and more to do with two things: danger and curiosity. Fear of something dangerous, and curiosity of what everyone else would intently gaze upon. Someone might not want to miss out on the sighting, not really caring about fitting in with the group.
@SpideyHypnosis3 жыл бұрын
That’s the exact reason they tested with different numbers of people looking up. If it was fear of danger it would have worked wether it was 10 people or 20 looking up. But the increase depending on the control group demonstrates the power of social proof. Social proof is one of the 4 strongest methods of persuasion. Our genetic need to fit in has been proven over so many studies with incredible findings.

I thought abt why Patrick could not drive the first time . I honestly Dk the answer , could be because the black cloth had holes in them . Or he was confident and with the way he presented he got the skill. It could also be him being able to see Walters eye movement through the cloth. But seriously I don't know how. It is very interesting
@SpiritClown3 жыл бұрын
About the blindfold: I think it was a fake blindfold, or it was some kind of tissue that could let him see through at least partially. Or he could have let him see from the bottom a bit (lifting the head up a bit would help). Also by saying to the passenger: "be sure to not close your eyes" and also by driving fast he made him focus on the road and on the obstacles ahead, diverting attention from himself so he could spy or adjust the blindfold a bit to see the road.

great video as always! i'd say that, in the 2nd attempt, he had in his mind the route he was going to drive the car, the park was empty so he didn't need to be very precise, he sticked to the same velocity for the whole attempt and finally used the hand on the shoulder of the passanger to feel his involontary reactions to dangers as a sensor allert. That's why he asked the passenger not to close his eyes, to keep him reacting to imminent dangers. In the 1rst attempt, instead he could not see the route as he was blind and even if he could have seen it before driving blind, he knew he needed to be way too much precise to drive in a full parking. he could try the shoulder tactic, but i think (and probably he thought too) it wouldn't be effective because the Redhead, on the contrary of the rich guy, was reacting to multiples sources of danger (at least 2, the driving and the shooting). best regards from italy!

I think the difference in the driving scenes is that in the one where he was crashing, there were objects everywhere and only 1 clear path, the were also fleeing a gunman, so she would have been constantly tense. in the second scene there was no external threats and only 1 thing here and there to miss, so he could just tense up when they were about to hit something. Great video! I think the blindfold thing was something like when you say you do magic and people say tell me what I am thinking of? And you can,t tell but at the same time if you do a book test you do read their mind cause you have a solid method to do it. The second time Patrick Jane had a solid method to Do it. He told not to close his eyes and put his hand on his colleagues shoulder that was the presentation to distract from the actual method that was more solid and reliable. The blindfold was transparent or gimmicked. Just my guess😀

True answer: first scene, Patrick was driving at night, and had very little light coming in past the blindfold, so he really couldn't see as he was driving. Second scene, he was driving in full daylight, and either the blindfold wasn't fully opaque, or he had a gap under it. The purpose for telling the passenger to watch the road was to keep him from looking over at Patrick's face.

That first part with Patrick Jane distracting the guy to get into the club made me think of much this is done on film sound design and mixing to control where audience is looking on the screen. One example I like is kind of a wide shot of a street with cars parked on right edge of screen. rest of screen there is a busy street, entrance to a building, lots of cars and people moving around. the film without without sound people naturally look at all the motion and on looking for something of interest. With the sound design and mixing the sounds draw your attention to the right side of the screen with parked cars, because that is where the next action in the movie is going to take place. Audiences don't understand how much where they look on screen is being controlled by sound not just visual.

I'm not sure about the psychology side, but logically, the differences are, 1st scene: his life was being threatened so he wasn't calm, the parking lot was full of cars so he didn't have the maneuverability, her calling out too many orders at once seems distracting. 2nd scene: i believe Jane was the one who proposed it, so he was calm and collected, a lot of empty space, so all he needs to do is to memorize general obstacles, Jane keep his hand on the passenger, he can gauge the danger based on the reaction with less distraction. Also, he saw the parking lot first the second time around

The way I saw the things he did during the episode where he’s blind was 1) During awkward pauses, people will tend to look toward each other to feel less awkward, so Patrick just had a good feel for the rhythm of the conversation. 2) He just guessed lol. She’d just gotten a new bf, and while it could have been anyone calling her, if he was right abt it being her new bf, she’d be wondering how he could’ve possibly known. 3) Yeah, it’s just presentation. He can feel the horseshoe shape, but other than that, he rlly avoids making definite statements, so it’s kinda just cold reading with touch instead of sight where the words he’s using are doing most of the heavy lifting.

As for blindfolded Patrick may be an example for kids or those who are watching this not to repeat this process as this is nothing but just a trick which makes others entertainment. ☺️
