That's fine, but anyone doing those moves would be instantly accused of cheating. Who takes cards off the bottom of the deck and moves them to the top? That's instantly suspicious. A fair shuffle takes small packets off the top of the deck and moves them to the bottom. Anyone moving cards to the top would be called out. Sure you can use sleight to disguise this, but you didn't show that here. I think you're leaving a lot out of this (possibly for the right reasons).

I can't believe how many of your commenters say "this isn't mentalism". One of them even says "...it's not even magic". Apparently, they think mentalism (and magic) is real, and not a trick. Here are you, showing them how mentalist tricks are done, and they can't wrap their heads around it. Religious thinking (the belief in something despite total lack of evidence, and ignoring all evidence to the contrary) has scrambled the brains of so many people, especially in the US. They have such poor critical thinking skills that they are open to all sorts of scams. It's not hard to see how a life-long liar and scammer managed to win the recent US election, with such poor thinking ability in the population.

You like to "throw in a couple of fake cuts" but I'd suggest that this makes the trick LESS impressive. The way you do those "fake cuts" looks like you're handling those cards like a professional. Furthermore I can't follow exactly what you're doing with the cards. So it just seems like you're reordering the deck to your liking. It would be more impressive if everything you do looks natural. So if you cut out those fake cuts, I'd find the trick more impressive.

can you do a video on how people like Oz guess someone's ATM pin code or Derren Brown in his Ted Talk guessing what someone's secret question was -- and then answering that question (what his computer password is)?

Do you have any books on mentalism (abstract principles as well as specific concrete tricks)? I'd prefer one written by you because I know you're honest, intelligent, and deeply interested in the subject, but will also gladly get whichever you recommend.

Crazy to see what we thought was real wasn’t, and what wasn’t real actually was.

For the money under the mug, Lisbon had her eyes closed. Jane could have simply peeked under each while she was reciting the presidents. I do think the handles are the most likely. I wouldn't go for your 12/3/6/9 arrangement though, that's too obvious. I'd go for 4,5,6,7, although not in that order. That would make the handles' position seem random and therefore unimportant. Even better would be to point them at objects behind Lisbon, so she would never be able to line them up perfectly, but he would be able to easily spot if they had moved.

I spotted the bear, but lost count as I did a double take. Jane's holding the real painting, puts it down in front of the fake, then picks up the same (real) painting. There was no switch. Also, the drawing is facing Jane, but when he picks it up, it's facing away from him, but that's just a continuity error. It's a long time since I saw this, but I thought this was another case of pretending to do something to trap the criminal, in this case to pretend to switch paintings, to get one of the characters to reveal that the "real" picture was actually a fake.

I really enjoyed The Mentalist. It was so obvious that Simon Baker was having a hoot playing Patrick Jane, and his enthusiasm was infectious. One thing I always wondered about that show - a lot of actors say they never really get into a part until they've nailed their walk. What was it about Teresa Lisbon that made Robin Tunney think she walked like Woody off Toy Story? If you don't know what I mean, watch Toy story, them watch the Mentalist. I've seen a number of reality shows where behavioural analysts will examine interview videos and say "look what he did there, he's obviously lying". I reckon these people are full of crap. It's so easy to watch someone who they know was found guilty, spot some body language they exhibited, and claim that it's proof of lying. I'd like to see these people do the same with videos where they don't know the outcome. My bet is that 50% of the time they'd claim someone was lying when they were not, and 50% of the time they'd say they were telling the truth when they were really lying. In other words, they haven't got a clue. I know that studies of so-called key indicators of lying have been investigated and all of them were found to be baloney. What they identify as obvious tells are really indications of nervousness. Whether you're guilty or innocent, in a police interrogation (the police hate that word, but it's the correct word), you are going to be nervous. If the cops have brought you in for questioning, they believe they have something on you, so even if you're innocent, your life and liberty is on the line.

I'm in two minds over the blanks. On the one hand, it does provide a big finish, but it also makes it obvious that you forced the card. If you just have normal cards, they are left wondering.

I've not seen either of these before. Both versions are pretty ballsy moves. You certainly need to practice lots so you can pull it off with confidence. Any sign of nervousness could blow the move by inviting extra attention.

The addition of the card force is great. I'm a fairly analytical person, so the trick fell flat for me but I think the card force is perfect to introduce perceived randomness.

This is a really fun routine. Your poor spectator's brain was fried at the end. I like the way you do actually tell them how part of the trick is done, but then the last phase just completely undermines what you said, making them doubt it.

I love the sneakiness of treating the two people very differently, while seeming to treat them the same. I can't believe how many people are watching your videos, and cannot grasp that you only chose bird because that was one of the animals he said. I've noticed similar comments on other videos, such as "but what if they didn't choose the card you wanted them to choose", completely missing the point that it's irrelevant which card they actually picked, because you're swapping your card with the one they touched. Some people really do need to learn to think for themselves, or at least engage their brain before typing a comment. Please don't try to dumb down your descriptions to cater for people who will never understand what you are doing. For anyone who grasps the basics of a conjuring mentality, your descriptions are perfect. Anyone not able to grasp what to do from what you said would never be able to pull off a performance.

This is a cool trick, but the set-up means it's got very few scenarios where you can use it. I guess checking that the jokers have been removed is a plausible reason to peek the top two cards, but if you launch into the routine immediately, it's going to look very suspicious.

I've read through so many comments. Some say "oh he just looked at the card", completely missing how it's even possible. Others say "yeah, but that's not how X did it", like that's a valid criticism. Still more just want to spread negativity, saying you talk too much. Ignore them. Haters will always be haters. You do a good job at explaining how the trick works from start to finish, if people are prepared to spend a few moments out of their precious masturbation time to bother learning something new.

Just under 3:30 minutes into video, but I can already see how you did it, noticing how you spoke about the drawing after 3 minutes, basically showing that you already knew what it was, then replaying and seeing how you would know, and then seeing how 2:44 - 2:47 went, and aha. I'm usually horrible at figuring out how these are done, so this one felt like a big win.

I managed to figure out how to set up the deck to get the 4 Aces, the straight flush (7, 8, 9, 10, J of spades) and the Royal flush for the 3 player Texas Hold 'Em game. You place the royal flush with the 9 of spades on the bottom. The King and Queen of spades have to be together in the 2nd and 3rd positions on the bottom. Then you take the 2 aces which can be any and the 7 and 8 of spades. Alternate them and put those on the bottom. Then you need to put 2 random cards on top of those cards for the bottom section after and put the royal flush with the 9 spades on those 2 random cards. Finally place the third Ace in the second position on the top of the deck. That's it. This way when you do the shuffling formula those cards are controlled into the specific positions. Edit: I'll actually start from the top and work your way to the bottom to make it easier. Take out the Royal flush with the 9 of spades, three other aces with the 7 and 8 of spades and two random cards. First, place the first ace, (Not the ace of spades) in the second position on top. It can be any ace. Next take the two other aces (Not one with the ace of spades) and the 7 8 of spades and alternate them in any order. Place the 2 random cards on top of those cards. Then place the 9 of spades on the bottom. Finally place the Royal Flush (10 J Q K A of spades) on the bottom. Make sure the King and Queen of Spades are together in the 2nd and 3rd positions on the bottom and the 10 Jack and Ace are in the 1st, 4th and 5th positions in any order. Hopefully this all makes sense. Edit again: Turns out you can place the ace of spades if you want in the second position on top. It will still work. I'm done explaining now.
