I concur! And what's more, he made an attempt to discredit her by accusing her of being delusional, and he didn't join his mates outside to confront an explosive situation. If he didn't know her he wouldn't have taken so many steps to distance himself from her.

I’ll add to what Alexzandar said before. The leader is watching the woman, but also, the bar is completely empty which means everybody knows who it is and is getting “in front” of the leader to protect him. Patrick knew he was lying because everybody in the bar knew who she was, hence the leader obviously does, and he gave her even a small bit of attention on top of everybody getting between her and the leader to keep the leader protected.

This is actually genius and I didn’t even think about the actions of the others! The fact that they all went outside to address this would suggest they have prior experience with her. I was just going based on the leaders interest in her which is inconsistent with his carelessness. Welllllll done!!! 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻.

The guy was an alpha, he shouldn't be affected by anything and be calm and collected, as Spidey said. But he paid attention to the women meaning that he was shaken and was not in his alpha form while being in his alpha zone. This is why Patrick Jane knew that he lied when he said he had nothing to do with the woman.

The first time that I watched the episode with the Mentalist finding that ring, I had pinpointed where it was as soon as he started wandering through the crowd. And it was simply because the actress was standing there, holding her purse or menus, whatever they were, up higher on her body, with both hands. Her posture screamed "guarding" to me. Everyone else was there, holding a drink, or with their hands down (calm and ready to be entertained) or with their arms crossed (disbelieving and waiting to argue). I also like how you talk about the reptilian brain and it crossed my mind that it sounded like something that I had read about before. And it occurred to me that in a real crowd, there might have been others that semi-recognized that information and attributed Patrick's words to being true based on a passing familiarity. Of course, if there were those that studied more in depth, knew the difference, how likely would they have been to speak up, since the rest of the crowd is going along with it? That's when I really enjoy this show the most, when you see these disciplines, theories and "tricks" continually used and expanded on in various scenes. It makes it that much more enjoyable (to me) when you get to feel like you are in on the secret.

3:55 probably because Jane established his "baseline" I don't know the actual term for it. He understood a little about how the guy reacts when they walked in. He was calm the whole time, also when he added that she's crazy it didn't really fit his vibe/normal reaction (he seemed to talk as least as possible but in this situation he added something that wasn't necessary). My guess to how patrick knew the biker leader was lying is because the biker leader immediately tried to come to a conclusion that the women was "deranged" so that they wouldn't be on the topic longer (which is risky as there's a chance he might give himself away )and tried to isolate himself from the situation. The biker leader also casually walks away, this could also indicate that he doesn't want to continue the conversation. Love your content Spidey!

You said comments on videos help the videos. So… I wanted to start something. On this particular video you were dead wrong, I have a friend that can do both those tricks exactly like you describe them being impossible. Normally I don’t name drop. But this guy is such a big name in our field, I know you know him. His name is Stu Juh. It’s ironic, a lot of people think buying a $12,000 chalkboard or a $5000 table to do design duplication is fair game. But when Stu is involved, they call cheating. In my opinion, when Stu Juh, shows up, he is perfectly valid and no more dishonest than anything we do.

When him and Lisbon came into the bar he kept playing his game, not caring whats going on, but now this woman is outside yelling after them and he's looking outside caring whats happening. Thats like the only idea I had of how Jane knew he was lying cuz I also noticed that he shaked his head while saying "no" so no sign there. If we compare, the ring belongs to different people. The trick is in the small difference. But, if it's the same scenario as shown, if jane gave his own ring, went somewhere else and told a person to hide it(assuming there was no accomplice in the crowd helping jane), it would not have been possible. It's not like he senses where his ring is. Maybe it's harder to believe and bugs me because it's a ring. Or its a ring with a detector on it haha. Technology has grown so much now. You COULD have the ring of the guy be hidden when you are away and find it! But you need to think out of the box. 1) have a confederate there 2) have a drone with with a gimbal controlled Telephoto lens hovering above the gathering. And you can even pattern track a person! And being away is easier, because you can look at your phone to a live feat! And drones used by law enforcement actually do this already for crowd surveillance. 3) Here one for you have a couple of 360 cameras mounted from the rafters from your venue and you can actually do it the same way. We put cameras with 8mm equivalent lenses in tiny tests and that was 12 years ago :) Does it require setup and therefore not impromptu sure! I did a lot of FX for TV shows and this is how far we went. Creating bespoke electronics and software and furniture or boxes to house the gimmicks in, the prop guys were insane! I created this self contained open prediction system. That blew magicians minds, because it was so clean they said it’s pre show. But it was done then and there. Highly customized “hacked” because back then technology wasn’t as self contained. And during that season of the next Uri Geller we used the hell out of that system. My best mentalism I created was for that show and I didn’t even get to perform it as the consultant :) When you have enough financial and good crafty resources you can create miracles.

@@SpideyHypnosis I am making a few assumptions, as I don't watch the show. Assumption 1: the biker gang, and specifically the "boss" committed a crime. So even if all the players have all the information, and even if they all knew that the others had all of the information, it comes down to the evidence and what could be proven in court. The ring thing would also have been possible if the mentalist first had them put the ring in some sort of case/box/ or bag. I have seen it done that way at a stage show. He has the volunteer put her ring in the ring box to keep it safe from damage as the other volunteers hid it.

If A* Biker is in charge, and the others are lackeys, then when a crazy ranting woman shows up, you can infer some things by how the other Bikers interact with her. For example, if the Crazy lady was A*'s mother, they would treat her with respect.

I've always thought the "Foot in the Door" was a bit off. The premise is, small commitment, leads to bigger commitment. But it feels more like a small commitment is leveraged, and it's not "I'm part way in, lets go", rather "I don't want to be seen as a Hypocrite". Especially in something like the "Big donor speech".
@SpideyHypnosis
@SpideyHypnosis 3 жыл бұрын
I can definitely see that. In fact we often talk about “need for consistency” being part of the commitment principle. The craziest thing is even if I’m aware of it. It works on me. Whenever someone at the grocery store gives me a sample, I buy the product lol.

Hi Spidey, great video again. from what I know about the psychology of lying the probability of giving away signs of deception increases significantly if the liar believes that the other one is able to detect his lies. So I would suggest that the fact that Patrick Jane established that he could find the ring helped to increase his chances. Would you agree? There is also one observation where I disagree with you. As an advertising guy I don’t think that the motivational speech was very convincing. In my observation there are three types of “yes”. “Yes I understand, but I won’t do anything about it.”, which is probably the most common one. “Yes, now leave me alone.” Which is the one that social pressure often causes. And “Yes, that’s right” The latter is that a yes you want to get to, because it’s the yes with commitment. In my opinion Patrick Jane only got the audience to the second yes. His audience know probably feels something like “okay, you tricked me into raising my hand and now I cannot lower it, without embarrassing myself. In consequence I will only pretend to write a cheque or if I cannot avoid writing a cheque, I will add to the check the smallest possible sum.” I hope I was able to understandably convey my thoughts, since I’m not a native speaker.
@SpideyHypnosis
@SpideyHypnosis 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah you expressed it very eloquently! And it’s a very smart observation. You’re very right about that BUT since we’re diving into depth let me offer two things. 1) he knows that in a crowd like that nobody is going to write a small check because everyone will hear about it, so as long as he gets them to a yes he’s happy 2) and I was thinking of mentioning this but I didn’t. There’s a reason he did the chick in the pocket trick. It’s to justify having everyone raise their hand, it’s part of the trick. So it reduces that “he tricked me into this” mentality. I still think it’s a really good script and would work much better than “write a check!” Lol I agree with your first statement. People lie less to someone if they think the person can see through their lies.

Two observations: Firstly, Solomon Asch's conformity experiment. The social pressure to conform to the majority, I think this should be mentioned more in depth because people are falling to this left and right everytime to all kind of cults and scams that routinely exploit this, even though we've known about it for 70 years. Secondly, the chick in the pocket may be challenging but doable. You clearly know that some performances require some homework previous to the beginning to the show, but you seem to be skeptical about having the chick moving around. Well, if the chick was on the outside pocket it would be less noticeable than in the inside pocket, and if the movements were your concern, you can use a old school technique to mesmerize the chick to keep it in a trance or in tonic immobility. This has been first described in 1646 book Mirabele Experimentum de Imaginatione Gallinae by Athanasius Kircher. So until the mark puts his hand in his pocket the chick might have been in a trance or asleep. A simpler method would be to anesthetize the chick, but it would be less cool and a tad controversial.

Another great video - thanks! What's your opinion of the British mentalist Derren Brown? He has done this sort of 'parlour trick' of claiming to be guided by someone's reactions, while holding their hand, in order to find a hidden object. But he has also been honest and admitted that he uses deception and misdirection as well as real skills in his performances, so we are always left wondering how he does things.

Love him. That’s the brilliance of him he has all these psychology presentations but also says he’s a liar lol so he gives himself permission to lie. Muscle reading is a real thing, I covered it in my second video in this breakdown series. Now a lot of mentalists actually do muscle reading and a lot of mentalists pretend to muscle reading when there’s another principle at play. It’s almost impossible to tell the difference. you probably won't see this but this question popped into my head so I have to ask. in psychological tests, questions often get repeated (only phrased differently) in order to see if people actually want that answer BUT considering the foot in the door thing, isn't there a chance that people stick to their answer simply because they said one thing the first time and now feel committed to answer like this each time(even when it might be wrong and not really fit their mental state)? wouldn't that screw the test?

@The_Mystic_Mind
@The_Mystic_Mind 3 жыл бұрын
@@SpideyHypnosis hmmm... I mean, if the phone was on speaker, and I had an earpiece, I might be able to tell when I’m getting closer simply from how loud the echo of my voice is, but people would see the earpiece. That’d be like contact mind reading, but cleverly distinct. The biggest problem is how a phone’s capabilities would align with that of a ring, or more simple object. It must have to do with the basic senses (touch, sight or sound) But if the object was within textural range of a person, they’d need to not be able to solve the secrets of the trick. I’d say magnets, but that seems unreliable given the amount of distance, and the ring’s possible placements. (What if they put it in a metal box?) Hmmm... I’ll need to think about this one. Edit: Actually, funny enough, if I simply said I had another “psychic friend” that I’d need to call, and simply picked up an accomplices phone (the one already called by mine before hand), I could easily walk around with a phone by my ear, with a perfect excuse to talk, all the while listening for when my voice gets loud enough to know I’ve found it. Then all I’d have to do it hang up.
