@Keren Or De Lange you make a great point. Many Evangelical Christians think that because Jewish worship is read from a siddur, it must be dead and dry. The sad thing is that they don't know and don't care about their ignorance. These boys are singing about the city that Jews have faced for centuries! This is the "juice" that powers the meaningfulness in this performance!
@msfuerst1 Жыл бұрын
Very good point. There is much space for personal input in the prayers but the Siddur is the foundation on which it is all built. It is a carefully crafted, deep and profound work. I find when I say the words slowly enough, I am often brought to tears and deep reflection.

This is typical of all orthodox boys choirs - the reason they're so good is because they're not singing about nothing, they're connected to the lyrics - especially with regards to Yerushalayim, this isn't just about mountains surrounding the city, this is about our past and future, the beit hamikdash, and Gd.

@BenDavidin5785 Жыл бұрын
@@tannersmedley6865 not saying it’s divine, I’m saying it’s passionate and connected. Literally all orthodox boys choirs are like this and have been since before autotune. They also often perform a cappella as there are a couple of times a year we can’t listen to instrumental music. Lastly, the lyrics are tehillim, which most religious Jews say all of on at least a weekly or monthly basis. There’s no reason to lip sync.

There is a reason why Yerachmiel Begun has been doing this since 1977 (though moved to NYC from Miami in 1980 for business reasons), with every year the older kids graduating, and new younger ones come in, where every 4-5 years, there is a full turnover. Dozens of albums and hundreds of concerts in the US, Canada, Europe, South America, and Australia over the years. I remember their biggest era of popularity in the late 90s when they sold out the Nassau Coliseum (I was there in the audience for the "Light up the Nights" concert) with a rotating stage while dancing and singing. The kids are talented, but Begun has an eye for talent when he holds tryouts, composes most of the songs, and does the choreography himself. There is also a reason why half the Jewish music singers of the past 40 years are alumni of this choir (You can see a lot of those people's music videos like Ari Goldwag, Yaakov Schweky, Mordechai Shapiro, etc ). Begun also trains them in the singing as well. However since 2009 their popularity has declines while the newer Yeshiva Boys Choir (Around 20 years old) is the dominant one.

As others have mentioned before, the reasons this choir is so good are that they don't just sing about anything, but the words have deep meaning to them, and they sing in prayer every day in their homes. And I would say the reason the choreography is so good and they perform in such harmony is also rooted in their culture, they are one people, one congregation, and every one contributes to it, everyone helps each other out, that's why it works so well in this performance.

Omg this group was there all my life, me and my siblings used to watch their full shows again and again for years, we knew All their names, each of us had a favorite singer haha, i have so many good childhood memories with mbc songs, And im 33... This group was born long before me. And they keep on this strong for years, Ofcours the kids are not the same ones, the ones i used to adore are now all grown up, but what makes this entire thing work is the guy you see at the end, yerachmiel begun, he started it i think in the late 70s and never stopped really.. and the old songs are just as good, (im no expert ofcours..) I grew up religious, im not religious for many years now, but i love their songs! And just so you know, im not even living in the us, this choir is really famous in the jewish religious community, and not one community, they are known and loved in any jewish orthodox community wherever.. and its been this way for years now. They are really big.

I love MBC and am so glad you enjoyed them! Orthodox Judaism (MBC is an Orthodox group) forbids men from hearing a woman singing unless she is family (a woman's voice is seen almost as a form of "nakedness"), so majority of Orthodox pop music particularly before the mid-80's was sung by men. Boys choirs like MBC perform music written for higher registers that would usually be performed by women in secular music Yerachmiel composes most of the songs for the choir, and "Yerushalayim" (Jerusalem) was composed specifically for when the choir went on tour in Israel in 2000 and an album was released with all the songs from the tour which were generally Jerusalem themed. The next Israel tour was in 2006 and Yerachmiel composed the song "Mosiach" for the performances, and it was so popular that in 2007 it was released on a new album which also featured a new recording of Yerushalayim. The next music album to release was Yovoh in 2008, and at their Chol Hamoed Sukkot concert they performed songs from the Yovoh and Mosiach albums, including Yerushalayim and this is THE Yerushalayim performance. The concert was recorded for DVD and the clips from here are the ones uploaded. though, at the time other songs from Mosiach and Yovoh where much more popular than Yerushalayim. in 2022 they have released the live recording of Yerushalayim as well as a live album of other songs also! I read somewhere that the costumes were handmade by Yerachmiel's parents
