After 40 years working as a 3D product designer I have now moved on to a new venture using Blender. Your videos are an inspiration and so helpful. They will enable me to create my own vision and then hopefully, in time, I will be able to offer financial support. Thank you seems hardly sufficient but that's all I can say at the moment. So. THANK YOU. I can see that Blender 2.8 is a game changer and will enable so many more creative projects to be developed. Your proposed series of videos would be an incredible resource. Thank you once again for sharing your talent and knowledge. Really looking forward to this new adventure. Dg

I hope you keep making these tutorials. By far my favorite channel. I'm new to 3D and Blender, no experience really at all, and I have no trouble following your videos. The pace is perfect and you explain just the right amount of detail. One thing I'd really love to learn more about, that I haven't really seen anywhere, is HOW to select the right textures when you're searching the vast resources available. Thanks again for the great work and helping us new folks find our way!

Are the devs aware of your Mask node? Would be great to see it implemented, Blender really lacks a good edge wear kind of node out of the box. Also I'm proud to be your first patreon! You helped me see the power of Cycles in 2.8 and get my head around a few things, I've watched some of your tutorials 4 or 5 times as they are packed with informations, thank you for that!
@WaywardArtCompany5 жыл бұрын
Wow, thanks so much! I'm very grateful. I don't know if any devs have seen this, but it's pretty far from perfect. There is so much more to be done. I actually may need to break it up into several nodes, so that it doesn't become all jumbled. Thanks again for the support and the kind words. :)

Quick tip when baking the textures. Since you are attaching an emmision node to view the individual textures in the node editor, when you bake you can actually set the mode to emmision instead of combined. That way you can change your samples to 1 and get a much faster bake. The only texture you'll have to wait a bit longer for would be the normal map.

I've inspected your Mask Node Group and there's some very clever stuff in there! I would never think about using the Bevel node to extract the edges - this is far better than using the Geometry/Pointiness, because it's not dependant on the mesh density and face distribution. I hoped the "leak" will be something better - I've tried doing this myself, but ended up using a stretched noise texture combined with normals just like you did. I wish there was some way to actually direct the noise mapping based on the mesh slope, so it'd really form streaks following gravity, not just more or less, going towards the ground, which is what this so far is. On completely vertical surfaces like this oil drum - this works great, but for anything with a bit more slope it falls apart quickly. I am very thankful that you've shared this!

Thanks for the mask node and this great tutorial. A small tip: instead of using the edge split modifier (which really splits the mesh in different parts if it is applied) you can activate the Autosmooth and adjust the angle. Or go to edit mode and use the split command from the mesh menu. If you are interested in more information, I have a video about that.

Instead of mixing the individual texture maps you could have just as well fed them into their respective shaders, and use a single shader mix node after that. The node tree would be much simpler and you would have saved yourself a lot of work.

The great thing is, that when you have everything bake you can add painted detail more easily
@globglob3d5 жыл бұрын
You don't need to bake to add paint detail, just create a new image texture (with alpha at 100% so it's fully transparent) and mix it with the rest of your node tree with a mixRGB node, with the factor being the alpha of your newly created image texture. Then you can paint on top of everything if you so wish to do so. If you bake then paint on top it's also fine but you'll have to bake again to export to a game engine, it will also limit you if you want your painting to be affected by some particular nodes as you can basically mix your new painted image any way you want within your node tree.

Hey! Just found your node and it's so incredibly useful/powerful. I am hoping to see an update soon, as the AO dirt mask has me excited! I had a suggestion, but I don't know how possible it is. Would it be possible to implement a way to drive some of the masks (like the edge mask) with the baked normals for an object? Similar to how Substance Painter can have masks driven by that same data? This would be quite handy.

Nice video! One question and one comment. Why do you mode links have a curve to them, mine are straight and when there are a lot of them it gets confusing! Now the commentZ although you drum/barrel looks incredible. Typically they have two mid rings not three (those are pretty rare). Having worked in the emergency services for 35 years including hazMat I have rarely seen a three ring drum. When I did they were much larger than a regular drum. FYI realism and all that :) keep up the great work. I bought you mask tools now to figure them out! Watched yer videos but it would be nice if you did a noses for dummies with your software. Stop by step. You jumped around so quick I kept getting lost 😑
@RREDesigns3 жыл бұрын
You can control the fall off for the node links somewhere, I just don't remember where exactly. By default they are not straight though, so how did you mess that up? xD EDIT: I just checked, go to Preferences > Theme > Node Editor > Node Curving and set it to whatever you like. :)

definitely a most fascinating workflow with an excellent result. two requests: 1) would it be possible to turn the music off? it is very distracting and i really want to hear and concentrate on what you are saying, and 2) could you supply the input images and/or maps, please? i tried to substitute my own blistered paint maps, having run the image (eaglepaintingcompany.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/iStock_000005396820Small.jpg) through Bitmap2Material, and the results were poor and let down the whole texturing process. i realise you cannot use paid-for maps, but perhaps you could provide something you have generated yourself in Substance Designer? all the more frustrating because your results are so impressive!
