I love how the boys are not content to just rest on their laurels with their fame, and reach, touring etc. they are continuously pushing themselves with harder and harder (and more terrifying,) musical challenges. They really, really put themselves out there with this one, it’s probably one of the most nerve wracking things they’ve ever done: going after Hilary, being recorded for posterity on KZbin, with Simone Young and a stage full of some of the best orchestral musicians in the world. Bravo!

Yes! So true! They are truly role models! Can totally feel their nervousness in their body languages before and after playing. Not only it's nerve wrecking for them to do, they share the moment with us too. I know they need the videos for their channels or their income, but it's not easy to embrace one's vulnerability.

@@elissahunt i don’t think so. They would have prepared a long time to play these excerpts. The music was there just because they hadn’t memorised it. Can’t sight read this stuff - apart from the technical difficulties, there’s a lot of organising in terms of fingering snd bowing to do.

@@katharineshade9550 Maybe not pure sight reading, but they didn't know which excerpts each would play, and the both looked genuinely surprised by each one. @@katharineshade9550 no I don’t think they have prepared it, otherwise I’m almost positive it would turn out MUCH better than the levels they played here. You guys did so well! But this is the video that finally makes me understand why she’s so internationally regarded. The theater sings with the reverberations of her sound. The complete control she has when changing dynamics it’s like she’s just moving a perfectly smooth slider it’s so even. And her precision, I hear each and every note exactly how it should be. And there’s not stray element of discordance in her play that catches your ear. Also on a separate note, I love that whoever won scissors paper rock always got the harder part.

This is beyond amazing because they’re SIGHTREADING ! I doubt very much that they knew which pieces Hilary was going to choose. And she didn’t hold back - she gave them really hard parts to play. And boy, did they deliver ! The slow parts (1st movement opening for Eddy and 3rd movement opening for Brett) sounded so gorgeous. And they totally nailed the difficult ones (2nd movement fig. 33 for Brett and 3rd movement fig. 55 for Eddy) while sightreading them. Plus the pressure of playing in front of Hilary and the orchestra. If that is not talent, I don’t know what it is then. I’m totally in awe 😍

Imagine going after Hilary Hahn in a concerto that is one of her specialities, sight reading the entire thing. Just for reference, Kavakos, who is very similar to Hilary in his playing (clear, academic, and precise), looks like an amateur next to her performance, that is how good she is at this piece. That taffy pull effect she does in the second movement sul ponticello part is basically unparalleled. Going after her when she's performing something she's not as amazing at is tough enough. I imagine it would feel like going after Heifetz's Sibelius or Oistrakh's Tchaikovsky. Huge props to these two for their sheer pluck.

@DannyBoy No disrespect to Kavakos, man, heaven knows I am in no position to pass judgment on his violin playing. It's just that Hilary is so good at this particular piece, I just can't imagine enjoying anything else. That's not to say Kavakos doesn't have his own specialties, that are best enjoyed with him and only him playing. only even mentioned him because his is second best (IMO of course). Otherwise, he is the personification of clean, virtuosic playing. My teacher always says that to feel a piece you can listen to any great violinist, but only Kavakos can make you understand a piece.

This video was so great! You're right about Prokofiev's flute music. I wanted to learn the flute because of Peter and the Wolf which I heard when I was 4 or 5. Started learning flute at 9 and as I got more experienced (and older) I bought the sheet music for PatW and realized it was much harder than I thought it would be! Definitely a double edged sword so lovely to listen to but so difficult to play!

This collab was wholesome! It's always great to see Hilary featured in your videos, and if you add Simone Young and the SSO with a classic format like "Professional Vs Beginner"... *chef kiss*. You did really well for being "beginners soloists", and everyone was having so much fun! It was a joy to watch. For those that couldn't be there to see you live the 30th (me included), this was a treat. Bravo!

I was just listening to Hilary's recording of this concerto, I absolutely love it, and this just highlights even more how incredible her performance is! Considering Eddy and Brett are both great violinists and great at sightreading, it's surprising to see how they struggle to play and really shows how many hundreds of hours you have to grind, even as a pro, in order to get this piece right.

@@susanbryant6516 I love this series, as you say it's fascinating to see the process of a seasoned soloist who works on very specific parts for a piece such as this one. Thankyou for this. Arguably the very best TwoSetViolin video for quite some time. It has special meaning after I attending all three concerts with Brett and Eddy coming on stage at Hilary's third encore to play a Dvorak piece with her, at the final Saturday night concert. To see the SSO players and Simone Young have fun like that is really very very special if not unique. Hopefully it paves the way for Hilary's return to the Sydney Opera House in the next few years. Brett & Eddy I'm relying on you two to achieve this !

I have been watched your video since 2015/2016 on facebook ( I don’t exactly rmb the year), and you guys motivated me a lot to play. I started to play piano when I was 4/5, but I hate to do exams. I once planned to give up when I finished grade 8 like 6/7 years ago. But someday I just found your videos on Facebook, and I met some fds who also play piano at school, then I could have some passions back. Your channel has changed my mind and let me decided to continue my journey. I don’t know how to express my thanks cuz I have been through a lot with you two. Although I am a amateur player(yeah like for 16+ years), I still put in a lot of effort to practice(even though I need to work). Maybe I cannot be a professional pianist (I suck), but I still joined some local competitions and got some awards(very luckily). Thank you for making this channel, it changes my life and means a lot to me. ( don’t know if you two read comments but just expressing my feels lol)
