I love how the boys are not content to just rest on their laurels with their fame, and reach, touring etc. they are continuously pushing themselves with harder and harder (and more terrifying,) musical challenges. They really, really put themselves out there with this one, it’s probably one of the most nerve wracking things they’ve ever done: going after Hilary, being recorded for posterity on KZbin, with Simone Young and a stage full of some of the best orchestral musicians in the world. Bravo!

Yes! So true! They are truly role models! Can totally feel their nervousness in their body languages before and after playing. Hillary Hahn is the best I ever played with and it was this piece. It was perfect in rehearsal, it was perfect at the dress and the performances were all perfect. She had immaculate innings that week and I got paid to witness it all! She is one of the greatest dancers ever to play the violin. Performing a noble work like this is telling a story only with music and movement. This is in fact DANCE. She dances and the violin and every movement of every part of her body is just as vitally important as every note, dynamic, articulation, tone, et al. She's the best. She. Is. The. Best. This is such a great video. Thank you and thank KZbin!

Imagine going after Hilary Hahn in a concerto that is one of her specialities, sight reading the entire thing. Just for reference, Kavakos, who is very similar to Hilary in his playing (clear, academic, and precise), looks like an amateur next to her performance, that is how good she is at this piece. That taffy pull effect she does in the second movement sul ponticello part is basically unparalleled. Going after her when she's performing something she's not as amazing at is tough enough. I imagine it would feel like going after Heifetz's Sibelius or Oistrakh's Tchaikovsky. Huge props to these two for their sheer pluck.
@dannyboy22672 жыл бұрын
Come on man, although I mostly agree with your comment, don't do Kavakos like that. Less flashy and maybe less precise as well, but I know many people prefer his interpretation (even if I'm not one of them).

@DannyBoy No disrespect to Kavakos, man, heaven knows I am in no position to pass judgment on his violin playing. It's just that Hilary is so good at this particular piece, I just can't imagine enjoying anything else. That's not to say Kavakos doesn't have his own specialties, that are best enjoyed with him and only him playing. only even mentioned him because his is second best (IMO of course). Otherwise, he is the personification of clean, virtuosic playing. My teacher always says that to feel a piece you can listen to any great violinist, but only Kavakos can make you understand a piece.

I was there too! When I first arrived, I was interested to see that the audience had soooo many young kids, tweens, teens and 20 yo’s. And that the audience was 80% Asian background. Quite different to concerts I usually see. I wonder if that’s Rays usual demographic, and what he thinks of it? Great to see young people being lured into appreciating classical music, they will be the ticket buyers of the future! I’m sure Ray appreciates them, but I wonder if he wants validation from adult more discerning audience. And I wonder if his young audience is also because of the Twoset effect? But then again Ray has always reached out to engage young people.

I have been watched your video since 2015/2016 on facebook ( I don’t exactly rmb the year), and you guys motivated me a lot to play. I started to play piano when I was 4/5, but I hate to do exams. I once planned to give up when I finished grade 8 like 6/7 years ago. But someday I just found your videos on Facebook, and I met some fds who also play piano at school, then I could have some passions back. Your channel has changed my mind and let me decided to continue my journey. I don’t know how to express my thanks cuz I have been through a lot with you two. Although I am a amateur player(yeah like for 16+ years), I still put in a lot of effort to practice(even though I need to work). Maybe I cannot be a professional pianist (I suck), but I still joined some local competitions and got some awards(very luckily). Thank you for making this channel, it changes my life and means a lot to me. ( don’t know if you two read comments but just expressing my feels lol)

This video was so great! You're right about Prokofiev's flute music. I wanted to learn the flute because of Peter and the Wolf which I heard when I was 4 or 5. Started learning flute at 9 and as I got more experienced (and older) I bought the sheet music for PatW and realized it was much harder than I thought it would be! Definitely a double edged sword so lovely to listen to but so difficult to play!
