After watching your demo I decided to try the Meguiar's Two Step Headlight Restoration Kit. My lights were worse than yours and I was thinking about just getting new covers. As a matter of fact last year I had them professionally cleaned and they did not charge me because they did not come clean. Anyway, I put the 1st step on and let it dry. Because they were so bad I did a second coat. After wiping them clean with a damp cloth as the directions said, they had that frosty look. I did the spray, waited 5 minutes and did the spray again. I can only say they look amazing. The kit cost 14 dollars and I still have more than enough to do them again in a few months. Love your channel and thanks on this one.

There are about a dozen different methods of "restoring" headlights, and they do work...very temporarily. But the results are similar to what people get when they "restore" old yellowed gaming consoles and controllers etc. The plastic has oxidized from prolonged exposure to sunlight. And no matter what you do the bromides created during that process are still there and cannot be removed. It will look amazing right after you do it, but they will yellow again within a month or two. This is an extremely short term fix. If you plan on keeping the car you're better off just getting new headlights unless you want to have to repeat this process every couple of months. These kinds of processes are only really practical if you're just trying to make it look good for a very short period of time so you can deceive the person you're trying to sell something to.

I bought my current car used, and the headlights are awful. Never seen such bad headlights, but the rest of the car is good and mechanically sound. The problem with any home fixes is the don't apply a new UV coating. So after like a month they'll turn yellow and foggy again. You need to apply a UV clear coat after you sand it.
@richardrhcp2 жыл бұрын
I've done a few by wet sanding, starting around 500 grit, then going up to about 7,000, then polishing with compound. I haven't had issues with yellowing. I didn't apply UV clear either. It's been about two years and they are still clear. This was after removing a heavy amount of oxidation. I've done the same on other cars, and they still look good. I wonder if making the surface so smooth with wet sanding and polishing allows it to bounce enough UV that it doesn't yellow quickly.

If you don't then you'll be pushing oil and grime around.

The Meguiar's works really well, but I would definitely buy the next step up kit from the two step kit. Especially if you have big headlights. Shit gets tiring doing it by hand. It comes with a scrub wheel that you can use with a drill. Also, you do have to occasionally redo it. The box says usually around once a year. It's definitely not a permanent solution, but for $20-5, you can reuse the same kit for many years.

The Chemical removes the top layer of oxidization. The sanding is to remove the additional compromised clearcoat off the headlight and to properly and evenly reseal or recoat with UV Protectant.. If you don't sand the light and make it all even, it could look strange or fail prematurely. Also, I would recommend sanding left to right, but you can go back and forth..just don't change direction. Typically you want side to side wipes going left to right or right to left.. I recommend in to out , with 50% overlap. Generally, it self levels, hence the 1 direction. Side to side is best...never go top/down or down/up. I used Distilled water while sanding with 1000 / 2000 /3000 / 5000 grit sandpaper. My restoration has lasted a few years now.

If you take a buffer using Maguiers Scratch X it will clean them up like new. While using the buffer DO NOT USE EXCESSIVE PRESSURE as you WILL burn the plastic. Go lightly and on low speed if your buffer has that option. (TIP) Never go in circles while hand buffing. Go from right to left as those types of scratches are easier to get out. This applies to both paint and headlights. You can also do the same thing to the tail lights as well. Just remember to use light pressure while using a buffer. Sometimes spraying a little water on the buffing pad or on the surface you cleaning will help as well. The water will prevent the surface from getting hot and and causing damage.

Just be smart enough to have the final stage ready on both lights so you can use ONE wipe. I typically go a step beyond just sanding, out of redundancy, and polish with a 3” pad on a drill with White Diamond metal polish, before applying the cerakote. If you really want to go all out, swap out the Cerakote with a UV protect 2K clear coat paint. You will never have to deal with foggy yellow lights ever again.

the drill kits specifically the 3M one with the drill attachment works for over a year before you have to do it again.

I just like the alt shots of the shop. The lesser seen portions.

I’ve found the lemon trio works great. Cut a lemon in half and dump baking soda on the cut part. Then scrub the headlight.

I love that Tyler hasn’t changed since he was a small channel to how he is now. And still drives a dinger

That was interesting. Thanks. I mentioned to do this one back on your last car video. Not sure if it was my comment that you read that made you do it but that was impressive.

The tea pot style restoration kit is the best out of any of these.. it makes it like brand new!! Try it out. Look it up other KZbinrs have done this test.

13:30 You need to now spray the Magic Eraser and toothpaste areas with clear spray lacquer to finish the job.

I'd love to see a follow up to this. I used a 'pro' one before similar to your Meguiars one. Sand it, polish it, seal it. But after about a month it went back to stage 1 where it looked sanded and cloudy. It was worse than before I "restored" it. I'd love to see which of your restorations lasted the longest.

Wow that kit with the spray is really good! Thankfully my headlights are glass so they don't oxidize but I will keep that good kit in mind for other cars I may own.

I actually just did mine and they make a kit that has pads that you use on a drill. Worked great. Pretty much just wet sanding and polished pads

Regular Colgate paste works fine but stuff with baking soda works even better. Personal experience wise. Also depends on whether it’s glass or plastic lenses

I can't remember the brand, it's either Mother's or 3m but there is a kit that comes with that drill attachment you mentioned. I've used them several times with good results but it does take some time

Hey Tyler would it be possible to test different brands of engine cleaners? Like the oil flush stuff, I've used the liquimoly one but I've heard others are better.
@MrKirby3652 жыл бұрын
Same stuff that's in a lot of nail polish remover, Acetone it melts plastic but it also degrades it over time. That could be part of the ingredient that it is in what your using or some times people just use that
@just-_a_-person2 жыл бұрын
All of the home remedies I've ever heard of also mentioned putting like clear nail polish or a clear coat of paint over the mr. clean / toothpaste after cleaning it off, and the clear nail polish will make it look like the mcguires side.
