After watching your demo I decided to try the Meguiar's Two Step Headlight Restoration Kit. My lights were worse than yours and I was thinking about just getting new covers. As a matter of fact last year I had them professionally cleaned and they did not charge me because they did not come clean. Anyway, I put the 1st step on and let it dry. Because they were so bad I did a second coat. After wiping them clean with a damp cloth as the directions said, they had that frosty look. I did the spray, waited 5 minutes and did the spray again. I can only say they look amazing. The kit cost 14 dollars and I still have more than enough to do them again in a few months. Love your channel and thanks on this one.

There are about a dozen different methods of "restoring" headlights, and they do work...very temporarily. But the results are similar to what people get when they "restore" old yellowed gaming consoles and controllers etc. The plastic has oxidized from prolonged exposure to sunlight. And no matter what you do the bromides created during that process are still there and cannot be removed. It will look amazing right after you do it, but they will yellow again within a month or two. This is an extremely short term fix. If you plan on keeping the car you're better off just getting new headlights unless you want to have to repeat this process every couple of months. These kinds of processes are only really practical if you're just trying to make it look good for a very short period of time so you can deceive the person you're trying to sell something to.

I bought my current car used, and the headlights are awful. Never seen such bad headlights, but the rest of the car is good and mechanically sound. (Purchased from a mechanic who let me take it for 2 hours, and I drove it to my mechanic who went over it.) So cloudy headlights weren't gonna stop the sale.

The problem with any home fixes is the don't apply a new UV coating. So after like a month they'll turn yellow and foggy again. You need to apply a UV clear coat after you sand it.
@richardrhcp
@richardrhcp 2 жыл бұрын
I've done a few by wet sanding, starting around 500 grit, then going up to about 7,000, then polishing with compound. I haven't had issues with yellowing. I didn't apply UV clear either. It's been about two years and they are still clear. This was after removing a heavy amount of oxidation. I've done the same on other cars, and they still look good. I wonder if making the surface so smooth with wet sanding and polishing allows it to bounce enough UV that it doesn't yellow quickly.

@@khalilsubahi1310 I've used the Sylvania kit before based on results from Project Farm - It is a bit more time consuming, took me about an hour or so to do both headlights. I did the restoration on my headlights in May 2020, and the clouding is starting to creep in enough now that I'd consider doing it again. I live in the snowy Midwest with plenty of salt on the roads. Don't know if the salt or uv hurts the headlights faster. All in all, they do work, and so long as they come with some form of sealant/uv protector they should last over a year rather than a few weeks.

Tape off around the light. Use wet sandpaper and make sure to keep the headlight and paper wet with water. Start with 800 or 1,000 depending on how bad the lights are. Then work up to 1500, then 2000, and up to 3000 while rinsing the light often. Then use a plastic scratch remover paste and buff the light. Finish with a protectant wax and polish.

The "don't put on paint" thing is because paint's color degrades with UV exposure and if you smear that UV protection on parts of the paint then it'll end up looking weird when the other surrounding paint changes color but the protected paint doesn't.

The best kit I've ever used was the Turtle Wax kit. It comes with lubricant, 3 different grits of sandpaper, buffing compound, and the clear coat. It's time consuming, but you can't go wrong for $15 dollars. I'd also like to add that it's important to fully clean them with dish detergent beforehand. If you don't then you'll be pushing oil and grime around.

The Meguiar's works really well, but I would definitely buy the next step up kit from the two step kit. Especially if you have big headlights. Shit gets tiring doing it by hand. It comes with a scrub wheel that you can use with a drill. Also, you do have to occasionally redo it. The box says usually around once a year. It's definitely not a permanent solution, but for $20-5, you can reuse the same kit for many years.

I was one of the first on a trial of eating no artificial Colors and preservatives and it was successful. Unfortunately my diet is bad and I have a ton of allergies as it was very difficult to find food to eat. Now I'm able, I'm allergic to what I couldn't eat before. But, we are accepting more and more of artificial things with US candy stores opening with imports and supermarkets now selling a small range of Mike n Ikes, Jolly Rancher which I must agree, have BAD ingredients and I couldn't eat anyway although I'd love to try. The Chemical removes the top layer of oxidization. The sanding is to remove the additional compromised clearcoat off the headlight and to properly and evenly reseal or recoat with UV Protectant.. If you don't sand the light and make it all even, it could look strange or fail prematurely. Also, I would recommend sanding left to right, but you can go back and forth..just don't change direction. Typically you want side to side wipes going left to right or right to left.. I recommend in to out , with 50% overlap. Generally, it self levels, hence the 1 direction. Side to side is best...never go top/down or down/up. I used Distilled water while sanding with 1000 / 2000 /3000 / 5000 grit sandpaper. My restoration has lasted a few years now.

If you take a buffer using Maguiers Scratch X it will clean them up like new. While using the buffer DO NOT USE EXCESSIVE PRESSURE as you WILL burn the plastic. Go lightly and on low speed if your buffer has that option. (TIP) Never go in circles while hand buffing. Go from right to left as those types of scratches are easier to get out. This applies to both paint and headlights. You can also do the same thing to the tail lights as well. Just remember to use light pressure while using a buffer. Sometimes spraying a little water on the buffing pad or on the surface you cleaning will help as well. The water will prevent the surface from getting hot and and causing damage.

@@cazzey8569 I've used a kit you put multiple pads on a drill. It takes a lot of time, but works. What's happening that causes the damage is your headlight comes with a coating that protects from UV rays, it breaks down over time. If you use these kits, you're definitely stripping down to straight plastic. You can help yourself buy more time of good clear headlights if you clearcoat. Also, imo, removing the headlight from the car makes the entire job a lot easier.

If it has been said already sorry but Deep Woods off bug spray works pretty good, I have cleaned a few headlights with that and a fiber towel, you have to use a little more elbow grease but it did a good job.

Can never go wrong with dissolving the surface layer with some diethyltoluamide then buffing and sealing. Basically all the kits are anyways minus the solvent.

Just use 3000 grit sandpaper and windex. Then use a clear coat of your choice. I use Cerakote trim wipes. They cost about $2 each in a box of 8. Just be smart enough to have the final stage ready on both lights so you can use ONE wipe. I typically go a step beyond just sanding, out of redundancy, and polish with a 3” pad on a drill with White Diamond metal polish, before applying the cerakote. If you really want to go all out, swap out the Cerakote with a UV protect 2K clear coat paint. You will never have to deal with foggy yellow lights ever again.

Tyler I was hoping you would do this. I recently did this on a minivan and they came out great. The kit I used was a three step system with the cleaning stuff that takes off the yellow. then wet sanding then the third step which turned the lights clear. The gloves they give you were way too small but a blast from the air compressor helped to get them on but not all the way.

I'd love to see a follow up to this. I used a 'pro' one before similar to your Meguiars one. Sand it, polish it, seal it. But after about a month it went back to stage 1 where it looked sanded and cloudy. It was worse than before I "restored" it. I'd love to see which of your restorations lasted the longest.

Same stuff that's in a lot of nail polish remover, Acetone it melts plastic but it also degrades it over time. That could be part of the ingredient that it is in what your using or some times people just use that
