Hey man, as a nearly fifty-year-old budding "motorcycle enthusiast," I appreciate your content. This story of yours seems to be relevant on a much broader scale. I understand that your story is very specific situationally, but it is something I've been learning in my own life. Walking alongside my wife while she died slowly from ALS triggered some massive changes for me. One of those changes came through a similar conversation that I had with a buddy of mine, where he pointed out that I was looking at life through too many lenses, and that I needed to simplify by figuring out my values and living by those alone. I settled on Authenticity, Integrity, Ability, and Grace, and I live my life now through only those values. What happened though, is that I have found that honoring those values means that I don't get to choose when to be who I am anymore. If I don't represent those values in every situation, I fall into conflict, and fear is almost always the only reason I fail at it. So I found myself really relating to your story and understanding the message as a familiar one. It's about creating the kind of character it takes to fly your colors or stay true to your values, and this is another example of how community is sometimes required to keep us on the path. I'm a member of the Patriot Guard Riders. I always wear my cut when I go anywhere. My finances uncle, who was a Vietnam Veteran, passed away a couple of years ago. I told my fiance that I'd like to try and set up a Patriot Guard escort for his funeral, but her aunt said absolutely not, because it had to do with motorcycles. Well, I still wore my cut and wore them with pride. Because I wear it everywhere I go, one of our neighbors recently joined the PGR as well. I understand what you said , you saw the light , to wear your colors , back in the early 80’s was a patch holding biker , walked , talked , had several bikes ,flew my colors every where , if I rode my pan , and I did ride it almost everywhere! But to ride and not wear my rags , was like unthinkable , unless, I was out far from home in uncharted country, then I might have them on under my leathers , but my chaps had the name down both legs , that only happened once , I pulled into a gas station late at night off 81 in pa. I had just moved there and didn’t want to get jumped by a rival club , as I was alone , and just trying to sneak thru, but I’m at the pump , put the stand down and as I’m going to the pump I saw the bike ft wheels sticking out from behind the station , and I thought here it comes …and was pumping gas , and here come 5-6 , 16’s walking towards me and my my bike , we got along with them in N.J. fine , in Maryland , ok , but iffy , and this was PA . unknown , but they all liked my big ole 50 pan , it looked boss, 6” over wide glide , 3” risers for the biggest apes made , a 21” ftwheel no frt brake , hard tail and they was sayin nice bike bro , makin me feel all is wel my club name down both legs KNIGHTS M.C. in red and gold , gothic style 4”tall letters , they said nothing , as this big guy was lookin at my carb set up , he went to stand , and the right end of the throttle caught him in the ear , I knew that had to hurt , but he said nothing but praise, for me my bike , then another , rubs my back tire which was ,all but shot , and sez your gotta get a new skin here soon , as I rubbed the top side , ole I , got miles on her yet , they all broke out laughin just the way I said it I guess , they al gave me a wave , and see ya later bro , like I was part of them . But I was for a minute , thinkin this might , end well , but that was my only spooky experience with them , as they all , whole ocean county chapter, and afew from ny , came to our run at the chicken ranch , in N.J.every year ( they had made a deal with the boss to have their colors on their belts, and not a one said a word about it , they drank ate and laughed at our jokes , told me I was really hard on prospects , as 2 of the guys did something stupid , and the boss told them they had to prospect for this run , and only to our patched members , so the one night they had to wear a huge pumpkin over their heads, eye holes cut out so they , looked goofy , and I’m close to the fire sittin in a chair , and I saw my buddy , who was prospectin that night , he’s carrying a 5 gal bucket , for a member to piss in , me , and doggedly comes over to me , and I looked him in the eyes and said I don’t want you lookin at my junk and spun the pumpkin was look in somewhere else , a continued to piss on his leg , below where his boot stopped it before he got wet and the bucket , those guys laughed , and sed you guys are hard on yer prospects , that’s how we do , I said , and they laughed some more . I loved that brother , as he knew I was just bein an asshole , makin sport of him , but had he he been in my boots , he would have done the same , l still se him every once in a while , but man , the club , was a once ina lifetime gig ! And even though the club has lost most all it’s founding members , there’s sitill some of us second helpin , bros around and we are all gettin old , we still remember , all the good times , and there was always , lots of them !!!

I know you are a man of integrity and courage. How? Because you take any comment, respectful or otherwise. You don't block nor threaten. You aren't afraid of other people's verbal assaults because you are secure enough in yourself. I am not in an MC and, truthfully, I don't know if they would want me at my age (65), but whatever. Good video, I ride with an organization that escorts veterans on their last ride , when invited by the family and proudly stand a flag line or a final salute . I have a cut that I wear every where because I’ve had people ask about how they can get our services as well as wanting to join, the organization started when a church in Kansas decided to protest a funeral for a veteran and several good men decided that the family should never have to experience that again and they won’t, it’s grown tremendously over the years till we do honor missions for our vets especially those in convalescent homes, let them know that their not forgotten. We know our place and have gained respect from most all clubs out there, and we give respect, because we’re all part of a community that a lot of people will never get to know, so yes wear that cut everywhere you go, the greatest thing is when this very elderly lady hugged my neck at a restaurant and just said thank you, that was the whole reason I do this, thank you for putting this out there

@Hog Davidson I stood in a line outside a church in Parkersbug, WV when a young soldier came home after giving the ultimate sacrifice and that church from Kansas had members who were planning to be there to protest his funeral(maybe you were one of those riders)!!! If I remember correctly, there were 150 Patriot Guard riders and over 2,000 citizens of the local area standing all around that church that day!!! The Kansas church people were in Mineral Wells, WV and turned tail and ran back to Kansas that day!!!! They never showed their asses anywhere near that funeral!!!

I rode with Patriot Guard for the first time yesterday, and it most assuredly won’t be my last. Was a very somber, but very assuring experience to see the widow of the gentleman who passed come and hug my neck going “thank you for being here”……like I had to keep from crying, because I know a lot of folks who’ve served, who’ve passed that didn’t get what we gave her. I’m going to be buying a cut and patches here soon, and will gladly rock the colors for them.

I tried riding with brother Vets , but whenever they tried to get organized, the Council of Wives inevitably got involved! They even stared allowing non-Vets. They soon had non-Vets wearing military rank and specialty patches and insignias as a 'sign of support', or because a relative earned it. NEVER WEAR MILITARY BLING YOU DID NOT EARN! That could/should earn a beating on the level as wearing fake 1% club patches bought on Ebay.

Love the Captain Spaulding shirt! I wanted to be in a club once. I loved the brotherhood, the tightness, knowing someone has your back. But now, I'm an older, (much older), hopefully wiser fellow. And I decided to not pursue such activities. I'm too old to do all the things they have hopeful prospects do. And frankly bud, I'm not a good ass kisser. I had a bike, an HD, but honestly, as nice as it was, I didn't trust it. I didn't trust a machine that had plastic parts in the engine! You say you're a mechanic, so you know what I'm talking about. The 88 Twin Cam to be exact. Oh yeah, for a ton of money I could have had the engine built like a tank and done away with the plastic. But a ton of money I was a bit short on. I used to just like riding bikes for the sheer fun of it. I've rode bikes since the 70s. All street bikes. I've never owned a dirt bike. Anyway, Weather I was right or wrong to sell the bike, I felt better for it. If you're already in a club, or whatever, then yeah, you belong. At least until you decide you want out. I've always been on the outside, And it seems that's the way it's supposed to be...

I too am in a MO that empowers children who have been abused, the weight of our cuts is a heavy one but so worth it. I get far more out of it then what I put in, there is no better feeling then seeing those kids come out of their shell and begin to smile and have fun. thanks for the talk. i am 68 years old and a patriotic American citation. have been all my life. i have never belonged to a MC. but have a few friends that are. they are the most down to earth people on the planet. and i respect them. i have driven motorcycles all my life off and on. i am not just getting back into riding and building/repairing cycles. have been a master auto mechanic all my life, but love the heck out of all motorcycles. mostly i just keep my mouth kinda under control as much as i can when the biker club members come around. like i said, i am good friends with many bike club members. but i know to keep my place around the club members and let my friends defuse any trouble i seem to get myself into more often than i care to admit. i have been straightened out a quite a few times by the biker club members and i always listen to them and take heed to what i am told. yes, been chewed out more times than i like to admit, but i always obey by their rules as they are nice enough to let me know when i get out of line. for the most part MC members are some of my best friends. thanks again for the chat. and i respect you twice as much because you are a bike mechanic and a member of a MC club. thanks again. edwinstarr22

@@goldilocks913 I'm a little late to the party on this comment section, and though I'm not in a 1% club, I am in an MC... and I've been around 1% clubs. It's not so much "respect us" or they'll stomp you... it's more along the lines of "don't disrespect us" or risk getting a beating. 9/10 times its an innocent misunderstanding that can be solved with an apology and buying a couple beers, but when the disrespectful party lets their ego get in the way is when violence may occur. At 50 yrs old, I've seen that happen way more regular nightclubs than any biker gatherings or bars.

Thanks for the spark of wisdom. I'm not part of any Riding group yet (mostly due to lack of availability to properly participate) And, I have only been riding for a few months. Just been enjoying the bike and the roads and getting into the lifestyle of wearing the gear and carrying around the helmet etc... ANYWAYS, I just wanted to say thank you for being a part of such a meaningful organization. I totally agree that wearing your colors and representing has such value when you can be that beacon of light for anyone in need. Just being a biker now, I have had people come to me to share their stories, some just reminiscing good times when they used to ride, others telling me a tragedy of a friend or family member they lost due to a motorcycle accident; It made their day just getting to talk to me. Even though there's an ounce of annoyance always having everyone say to me, be careful, ride safe; accepting that as their best wishes I always say - thank you , will do.

Great video!! I am pretty new to the lifestyle and have been with an assotiation for about a year. Such great advice about wearing a your cut all the time when your on the bike. The assotiation i am with is a veteren assotiation and you just never know when a vet may need help but just doesnt know who to talk to!! Thank you for sharing that story!!

Man I was an abused kid in about every way you can imagine. I've rode for years never with a club or anything I've always felt alone in a crowded room. But in riding I find my peace. 5 years ago almost six I gave my life to the Lord I don't drink don't smoke or do anything. I've always wanted to join and organization to help kids. But it's hard because I ride alone due to not partying at all and I can no longer live that lifestyle. I have noticed since I've been to every Leesburg Bikefest , that you see well known clubs wearing there cuts, I give respect to those members..I have never gone without mine, have had people approach me and ask about the organization I ride with which is family based, after chatting we say our goodbyes and see ya down the roads, unless a venue or event says no colors, like you say you have no choice, you wear your colors..with that being said be proud of your colors, make a positive statement, and be who you are, much respect, and see you down the road! Ride safe! Even if we're not from the same club we all are part of the biker community

I love your videos. They are very informative. I just want to give a shout out to The Mountain Men. I met one of your members at a gas station in Maine. The Tomahawk Flintlock Pistol RC vest looked cool. I learned that RC means Riding Club. I thought from my perspective that RC meant Reenactment Club. I used to work a cannon crew. Cannons are not a toy BTW. We had a good laugh. Guy was cool.

Goodness this is fascinating stuff. Pro Monkey, you are highly entertaining, funny and you know your bikes (obviously). But you are also well-spoken and provide details of biker culture in a plain, easily-understandable, yet articulate manner. I'm not a biker, I'm a great grandmother, ret, and love exploring cultures I'm not familiar with. I always have. Plus, when I was a youngen in the Midwest, for a few (unfortunately) short years, I rode and even went on impromptu trips and partied with bikers. Some of the best, most accepting, solid folks I have met in my life. I ended up helping a bunch of bikers through my career and my love of bikers never left me. I always intended on getting back, buying a new bike (my old one was busted in half by someone I loaned my bike to for one night), but it never happened and finally in my late 30's, I stopped putting "motorcycle operation" on my license. In any event, sorry for the meandering, nothing post. Just wanted to say great video, great story, and great wisdom that I feel can apply to all kinds of identities and belongings. You rock. 🙂

Hey man we wear the same colors after my wife and I earned our patch a bunch of us where at an event and a X child came up to me and told me his story and thank us for our help he rides now ,want to take pictures with his family, so yeah we wear our cuts all the time you never know who needs us , like your videos man

Good points. I'm a Legion Rider and proud of it. My cut is weathered and my patches are faded because I never ride without it. I'm proud of what we do so why would I hide it.

Great video... I am part of a religious group patched in by the State Bosses and I wear my colors all of the time no matter what. We do a lot of charity and food distribution and our colors speak volumes about the heart of bikers.

Good video, I actually enjoy your Club culture discussions, but I also enjoy your build adventures as well. Back in my MC days, it was your Cut always, if nothing else, and one set of patches. Running with one of the most aggressive groups and having been through many Club house/yard lock downs, do too issues arising etc. But a no fly, never, wasn’t an option. Moving on to Rallies, have a crew headed to the Red River Rally in NM, weekend of the 27th. Let’s go!

100% ALWAYS wear your rags! I know you are in the same state as me, and I preach this all the time to my Brothers, whether or not you are wearing your rags, you are ALWAYS a patchholder. At any sort of event, you always wear your rags, and I mean always! One of the reasons I never go to bike week, too many places say "no colors" If you cant accept my colors, you dont accept me, period. We work hard to earn our colors and whatever position we hold in our organizations, wear it with pride, always.

I had a member that lived an hour away, (not much presence with our club) he rode all the time, yet he never wore his cut unless he was with us. He claimed it wasn’t necessary if it wasn’t official club business and said he didn’t wanna deal with protocol when we weren’t around (he no longer stayed in the club much longer after we figured it out) but we had a great cause, and I always thought it was great advertising when on the bike wearing your cut. If I’m on the bike, I have my cut, or had, slick back life these days.
