Thank you for posting this for us lay people(in the US). Believe it or not, we understand them (on my ADHD meds of course) and it 'brings us up to speed." Scientific communication with the public is *so* important!!!

Thomas Szasz wasn’t far wrong. My wife suffered a “breakdown” (depression, schizophrenia, paranoia, addictive personality disorder… depending on which doctor was treating her at the time) and all the doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers (even the nice ones) treated her like a criminal! Well not all. Because there were no “beds” available in the public mental hospitals (that looked indistinguishable from the one in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest), she spent her initial few weeks at The Priory. Beautiful place, where she was reasonably well treated (albeit still as an errant child, not a struggling adult needing help, sympathy and understanding). My own anecdotal experience of psychologists and psychiatrists and social workers has been appalling (I myself am a B.Sc psychologist). Sloppy thinking, maliciousness, disdain and disrespect for their patients, and arrogant assurance in their diagnoses and methods of treatment (many blatantly illogical, unscientific or just plain wrong)! It doesn’t help that the DSM is a complete political and corrupt money-grabbing fraud.

The best outcomes so far for those with schizophrenia are in Western Lapland where 75% of those classed with schizophrenia no longer have schizophrenia and they use a model that includes very very limited use of drugs only briefly at the early stage of diagnosis and thereafter use a social model of intervention. This recovery rate is also comparable to those with schizophrenia in the poorest Indian villages, where there is very little use or availability of drugs and a large ability to be part of community. In comparison, in the UK and the rest of the Western world, the chances of recovery from schizophrenia are 3% and on drugs for life.

He is a scholar and a badass. I hope someday scientists will reinvestigate the efficacy of SSRIs and understand that not all depression can be cured with SSRIs and antipsychotics. This war on dopamine must end.

Old comment, don't care. Curing depression with medicine is lnt possible, we are simply treating symptoms. There is no evidence that depression is caused by lack of serotonin.

Yes we know that seratonin helps in upping mood. Here it is shown that changing diet can dramatically change levels of seratonin. It's also known that exercise does that. This talk only looks at the drug model, not other ways to increase seratonin or that brain imaging can show instant changes when thinking happy thoughts and thinking negative thoughts. It doesn't look at the long term effects of SSRIs either - the research and data is not positive on this. At least he's looking at short term uses of drugs, e.g psilocybin. It would be so much better if he teamed up with others that are not ONLY looking at drug options because it limits his ability to look at other possible things that are affecting the brain, i.e we are biopsychosocial beings which he quite clearly shows, but only uses the drug model of intervention.

Good point. All the doctors and psychiatrists did that we visited for treatment was to manage the drug regime, mostly by trial & error. Try this drug, see how it works and what the side effects are. No? Try this other, newer drug. No, let’s increase the dose, decrease the dose, combine it with fish oils or homeopathy or antidepressants. My wife started smoking again too. Oh, that’s just self-medication, said the doctors. We don’t factor that into the programme… what we didn’t know was that many psychotropic drugs are very hard on the liver. Combine that with alcohol and goodness knows what else, and there’s a serious risk of liver damage (which was confirmed in the autopsy report several years later). To be fair, her GP refused to renew her prescriptions after a couple of years because of the risk of sever liver and kidney damage. And by that time the consulting psychiatrist had lost interest and because of the way the NHS works, there was no mechanism to continue treatment except by buying the (same) drugs (mostly Olanzapine) online from India. In the end, she just stopped because the side effects ended up being worse than the “disease” the drugs were treating.

Experts specialize. This is his specialty. When you look for just one expert to give you a total, conclusive and absolute story, you are looking for a quack and pseudo-science. Credible experts do not discuss what is not under their specialty.

All the stoners at my school are either dead or in prison. The drinkers are lacking just one. The odds don't stack up Mr nutt. I don't believe you. The evidence is glaring around me, that your premise is unproven. But who am i, just someone outside of academia, using my senses to make sense of the world around me. Academia for the sake of academia is the worst drug of them all. Ooohh, he's such a superstar. Roll out the red carpet when God's turn upon your campus.

Would the disease theory of addiction explain why football players who are addicts, like Maradona, George Best or Wayne Rooney, don't pass the ball selfishly, cheat, hurt other players, get expelled by the referee? The only common denominator between all addicts of any social background and distinction is that they are notorious liars. Addiction affects predominantly young healthy criminals. I have been trying to have the discovery of the nature of addiction known for years to end the war on drugs. I would like to help you as a recovering addict and psychologist. Addiction is the psychology of a liar, drugs don’t cause addiction and only liars get hooked and only honesty gets freedom. The tragedy of addiction is children who revenge a childhood hurt, or trauma, against their parents learning from example. Addicts don’t forgive, are needy of attention that steal from others, and have secrets that tell in AA meetings to reveal who they truly are to take off the mask and heal, ending the identity deception. Liars bring up liars, addiction runs in families. Parents hurt their children and children retaliate becoming victims of themselves to conceal the hatred and hurt others. I am alone socially ostracised by liars paying the price for being honest. I can prove my claim that the obvious truth is addiction is the psychology of a liar dropping mortality rates when my theory is known.

@@MrDasfried I am a psychologist and I want to know what do you understand when I say "to end the war in Ukraine the discovery that atheism is a logical fallacy has to be news". I don't want to talk with anyone that doesn't understand the meaning of "to end the war in Ukraine the discovery that atheism is a logical fallacy has to be news". I don't want to waste my time. I am a good person and I may look to you like an alien because you are not familiar with the truth. I am a poet that writes prose to be understood better, all my work is poetry. My art is not understood and future generations would understand I am a good person among bad people. I can only speak in a human language to be understood, and i am doing my best. What I really expect from you is to abandon inmediately what you are doing and work 24/7 to try to overcome the most severe and devastating censorship in history in a social media era for many years trying to save lives with knowledge proving God exists. Atheism is a logical fallacy that assumes God is the religious idea of the creator of the creation to conclude wrongly no creator exists because a particular idea of God doesn’t exist. I think it is impossible the existence of the creation or finitude without the creator or infinitude. I hope for God's sake to be understood.
