Interesting case study: When I had Facebook, everyone I knew wished me a happy birthday. After I deleted my Facebook, no one ever wished me happy birthday ever again (except mom).

They receive a notice on Facebook and/or an email notice of the birthday. They send you a no-effort quick message. I would prefer a meaningful message from people who made an effort to reach out to me. 1 or 2 meaningful contacts is WAY better than 50 meaningless ones.

I have my birthday hidden on fb because I was done with getting birthday messages from people who didn't really know or care when my birthday was. The few messages I get now, they mean something.

I love your observation. I JUST last week deleted my BD off of FB. Trying hard to use it for my business only...then off. Annnnddd ironically enough I am in the process now of deleting all that I haven't spoken to and have no chance of building a relationship with in messenger. This will be a very large # of accounts. Its so fake. My new motto is upon a friend request, if I'm not able to build a relationship with the person...bye bye. This is a great bit of info to keep in mind! Don't fidget...go take a walk! I love this!!

Social media is exactly the same as the drug/party scene. When you’re out and partying you have loads of “friends” but the moment you stop partying you never hear from those people again. 90% of your social media friends will go away when you quit it.....they’re not really friends.
@Bolaway
@Bolaway 3 жыл бұрын
Nice example. I realized the same through the years. The person I had as my best friend since childhood preferred to post on facebook that his dad died instead of talk to me or his friends. This is trigger my alarm and made me quit social media. When I almost died starving without a job or money, nobody in social media asks how I could be. They just want to show themselves and complain for everything you disagree. Most of people there now are cruel and don't have corage to say the same face to face.

So I woke up one morning and literally just cold turkey deleted my FB, IG and Twitter. Almost 3 months later my businesses are busier, I've attracted people into my life who are on the same high Vibrations, and even met a male who I actually have genuine interest with and also has zero social media.... Sometimes the thing that we think is validating us is actually holding us way down.....I can't see myself going back on social media anytime soon 🥳 Update 10/2021 - It's been more than 6 months and business has tripled for both my businesses. Started a podcast discussing health, wellness, and self-love. Investing this time and energy into vibrating at a higher consciousness also attracted a man I'm crazy about too!! You attract what you are, not what you want!! NAMASTE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE 😍 ❤ 💖

( Edited)I left social media and wrote 2 books, and took lots of classes and now I have success in my life purpose. I have finished writing 3 more books, since this post was made, and 5 new poems accepted for publication and another poetry class completed. When I say I left social media it means all the chatting it up when it has nothing to do with my products or goals. For those who doubt that I wrote books, my book the last time I saw you is on the first page now of Amazon under it's main keyword which "Poetry Chapbook" I am not trying to boast just making myself clear. I can prove all this. It is almost impossible to get as much done as I have, if you are chatting on social media every day or just surfing watching videos. Please note that I don't watch youtube videos, I listen to them, which keeps my brain focus from getting exhausted. I prefer to stare at painting and photos than youtube videos, because I am a writer.

*Digital Life isn't real. Disconnect from everything and try to use social media as little as possible, preferably using it for business or taking care of other errands. Practice mindfulness by living your real life. Take long walks and enjoy the nature, your surroundings, birds chirping, kids playing around. Cherish your time with the family and friends. Put the phone down and start living. You will be amazed how many things we miss out while zoned out. Be in the now.*

O'SSÉIN - Master Your Mind With Me love it, I quit all social media except KZbin and I go outside to ground myself after I use KZbin. My mindfulness practice has been life changing. I choose to live my best life. Namaste 🙏🏼

Thank you. Love this advice. I have been off social media for 8 months now. My friends think I've lost my mind bc I actually did it. They ask why would you do that and they say oh, don't be that person... Or say I wish I could do that. My response is, you can. It's opened eyes and my mind to how damaging too much time spent "scrolling" can be. Comparing your life to these fake personas online is so unhealthy. The only thing I use is KZbin for insightful videos like this one. I needed a break from it all. I have found I don't want to go back to it. Not feeling the pressure to post everyday and "one up" the next person has been a huge relief. I don't feel the need to take pics of my food or "check-in" while I'm dinning with friends or family, instead I enjoy the moment and have real conversations with them. It's been refreshing to say the least. Once you step away from it and become aware of your surroundings it opens your eyes to how real social media addiction is.. You see others faces buried in their phones and gives you a glimpse of how you looked when you were consumed with the digital world while ignoring everything and everyone around you. I don't expect others to stay away as long as I have. I do recommend people take breaks from it. At least be mindful of the amount of time you spend online.

I’m 45 and I never had time management issues or depression until I started over using social media during some life changes and I started noticing both. I had to disconnect, I go onto KZbin less than 30 minutes a day and I ground myself after to be mindful and present in my own life. The impact was DRASTIC and I can’t see myself going back. We are doing ourselves such a disservice. We bought board games and have family game night now and we cook new foods together and I realized we were making eye contact more and communicating more. Kids now don’t even have social skills or respect their elders because online they are used to saying what they want as well. I could go on and on but y’all get the point.

With due respect, this type of rigidity is different from Professor Newport who has learned and has access to these tools and platforms AND maintains a disciplined value-based philosophy that dictates & guides his behavior. Its not about rejecting the tools, but rather integrating them into your life while purposely rejecting the lower value items so that one can double down or triple down on the high value items through a focused and concentrated life.

I quit all social media 5 years ago and all the improvements are real but no one talks about how hard it is. I definitely had a very hard time the first year - so many people I truly love were on there and it had become the main way I kept in touch. I also launched my own business and moved out of state where I knew no one and I had an “impressive”social media presence (colleagues, etc) which I derived a lot of satisfaction from… but the most important things in life really do require time, effort and sacrifice and it’s great to have my actual values reflected in this choice to quit all social media. Makes me sad to think about it. Same with all the times we have ignored our loved ones. I once forgot to pick my nephew up from school because I was 2hrs deep in a stupid political Facebook debate. I don't even remember what it was about, but I do remember my nephew asking why I forgot him and covering the shameful truth by saying I lost track of time while working on my book. Also, i have also heard that reading books teaches way more about the world than the 24hr news cycle. Without news and social media, think how much we could learn, create, and connect with what really matters.

@@GoferGirl you almost made me cry. You are not alone with mistakes like that, and I am ashamed because I did something similar with facebook, didn't answer calls from my family and almost missed finding out that my mother died. My daughter abandoned me and her father and her best frienfd for facebook and got very addicted, our family has never been the same. she never got off Facebook even during family time and it led to so many fights until it broke our bond. My husband is very addicted to TV to the point, that the president can walk in and he won't stop watching Tv, and now we are facing a separation because he spends almost all his free time watching tv. I told him that constantly watching TV is no different than staring at KZbin videos all day, being on social media all day but he doesn't believe me. He has spent alot of our money on movies..etc and we could of went on trips. I have realized that once you break your addiction to social media, and tv and bar hopping, which is all forms of ways (people try to escape reality and get addicted), you can no longer be with people who are still addicted. I live a very lonely life now because I am reading books, and listening life advice, and want to talk to people face to face, do things with people off the internet, but everyone I know just want to be on social media. Social media and tv broke up my family.

A lot of young men would benefit immensely from removing all social media from their life, joining the NoFap movement and engaging in regular physical activity. In my personal experience, these three things in unison helped to crush depression, anxiety and feelings of inadequateness and built up huge self esteem and confidence. It doesn't happen overnight but stick with and after a couple of months you will start to see serious positive changes in yourself and once that happens, you will never again want to go back to the toxic shit that was poisoning your life. It's not an easy road, at first, but it does get easier.

I'd tend to agree with all 3, except the NoFap thing. Depending on the person, NoFap may do them more harm than good. It's not unhealthy to engage in, it just needs moderation like anything else you do.

1. Quit social media for a month and decide on how you will spend your freed up time (like interacting with other people, self-reflection, and skill-building) for me: Sports, creative, intellect (Martial arts/fitness, guitar, books, and social interactions) 2. After a month, decide how you will use the media to enhance your life as a tool. (How and when) 3. Cognitive Training for Focus: Take mindful walks where you focus on a problem (be it professional, mental, health, etc.) and meditate on solutions and ideas. Learn to be bored! Right now you are giving your brain a treat for checking a screen every time you are bored! 4. Being alone with your own thoughts give self-insight and growth and process thoughts and ideas.

I deactivated my Facebook for like 3 months and didn’t miss it at all. Then I went back on there, really didn’t miss out on anything, and realized it made me feel worse. I quit Facebook and Instagram about five months ago. At that time I was feeling frustrated with so many things and shared frequently thing which I thought other people could benefit from, all the while giving up valuable time. Since giving it up, I have started learning Spanish for two hours a day and learning how to invest my money for myself instead of turning it over to a mutual fund. I am earning 10 times more than my “professional” did. If I had stayed on as a Facebook/Instagram addict I would have never accomplished these skills.

Yeahhh. I always see guys hotter and younger than me with tons of confidence and money and can do whatever they want. Makes me want to be like them but also feel like our young days need to be like that and if they arent you are "not cool". I think its part of the problem with American party culture in the media. People get pushed to think they should be young forever and have no responsibility and think they should feel bad if a bunch of attractive people arent waiting to sleep with them.

I've seen some people texting online about thier personal problems also. For some people social media is their main social outlet. They may not have any friends or people to talk to. So some of these people will share their miseries online and also whine/bitch about whatever irks them. But otherwise I will say it's a very poor substitute for a real social life. Unfortunately this can only increase with the covid pandemic. With social life pretty much restricted or gone in some cases you can't hope to see this situation improve immediately.

This makes me remember when I was younger, about the age of 15. I wasn’t on Instagram and even though I was on Facebook, I couldn’t afford internet to always be on Facebook so I spent majority of my time alone with myself. I finished high school one year earlier and I was pretty much waiting to turn 16 so I could start university. In this period, I remember I wrote a lot (I’ve always liked writing). Now, I don’t write very much, I have all these ideas, I write them down But I don’t actually sit down to write these stories. I’m no longer as focused as I used to be. Thank you for this video 💞. I won't quit social media because a lot of my sales as an author and a musician come from being present online. I think it's important to know HOW to use social media and really regulate your time on it. I never scroll on Facebook - I only post. And I regulate my time on Instagram. I also often turn of the WiFi on my phone just so I can get a break :) If I wouldn't be an author/musician, I'd delete everything for sure. :)

I find it such a shame when I see people walking while looking at phones. If you can't go for a walk without looking at your phone, something has drastically gone wrong. People will do anything to avoid being with their own thoughts. It's especially sad if I see a young mother with a child, and she's on her phone. That child is going to grow up being paid no attention to at all.

THE TEMPTATION IS THE KEY TO FREEDOM..... I've been contemplating that statement for several days and it finally made sense while listening to this conversation. In relation to this topic of social media and the sense of outside manipulation, loss of control over our lives and the resulting anxiety brought a clear understanding of the statement, 'the temptation is the key to freedom". I realized that the answers are always inside of me but I just have to access the unformed questions yet to be asked.... like playing a game of Jeopardy! For me the question I need to ask was, "WHY do I FEEL I need to check in with Facebook or Messenger? WHAT do I FEEL I will miss... how will I be left out or deprived of something "good"? WHY am I feeling anxious about not being included in the "prize" that is offered as social media bait?" And for me the answer was I was being TEMPTED by an age old NEED/DESIRE to be "wanted", to be "valued", to be a "part of the family". Early experiences of rejection and abandonment have always been present just below the surface, like subcutaneous fat!

I agree that if you are using social apps in place of actual intimate relationships, or as external validation, the problem isn’t the app. The problem is how one see his own self worth, and that needs to be internal. Fear of intimacy isn’t the fault of FB. Its like blaming the alcohol for alcohol addiction. If you use it to fill needs incorrectly, then well, you had self worth issues long before social media. The point should be self fulfillment from internal rather than external sources. And CPTSD healing so we aren’t looking for validation in the first place. The internet is amazing, use it for porn or to take piano lessons. That’s on the user, not the sites.

8:29 That's a profound statement. People are afraid to be alone. I'm alone 95% of the time. After a long marriage became abusive, I left, then divorced. I was alone for the very first time in my life. Coming from a large family where not only did I have to share a bedroom with 2 sisters, we all slept in the same bed, shared dresser & closet space. When I left my parents home to serve in the military, I always had 1 - 3 roommates. Then, when I married, I had 4 children. When the divorce was final, I lived completely alone for the first time in my life. It was terrifying! It took some time to adjust, a few years! Letting myself adjust to it was key. The single & dating world had changed so drastically in so many horrible ways. After a couple years, I decided to get out there. It was even more horrible than I had thought. Married people acting as if they were single, all the lying, cheating, demands for immediate sex. It was a real shock for me. I got my heart broken probably a dozen times, had 4 stalkers. 9 years ago, I moved to another state. I thought that a change in location might be a good thing. A guy from my past found me online, convinced me to give him another chance. Just when I thought that dating could not be worse, it became much worse. After that ended, it was clear that I would be much better off single & living alone. When i used to hear other girls talk about how horrible men are, it was really repulsive to me. From the bad experiences, I saw that I was starting to think like them. Hating on someone based on gender makes zero sense. At that point, I stopped dating at all. Guys were still asking me out, I made a promise to my heart that I would never let her be shattered, ever again. I still get asked out, yet, it doesn't interest me. I poured myself into working out & working from home. Becoming more fit & toned while building a pretty sweet nest egg! Because of the USAF, I speak 5 languages fluently, so, I use that skill to support myself. It's very isolating, it pays well. If I could, I would be around people more, yet, this is my life. I have adjusted to being alone 95% of the time.

@@adatbh The key component to having peace in my life was to allow myself to adjust to being single & celibate. Not at all hating on men, more like loving the peace I have in my heart which was ruined when I allowed a man into my life. I had a wonderful grandfather, a very caring, patient male supervisor in the USAF. Last yet definitely not least is my son who has grown into a fine man with respect for himself & respect for women. He overcame his life challenges to become educated, to work in his career of choice, choose a wife carefully. I have several male platonic friends who understand that it will only ever be platonic. I would sacrifice my own life for any of these wonderful men As a completely single woman I can indulge my passions for art, for creativity without anyone bitching about how much $$$$ I spend my own money on art supplies or the time I spend on my projects. Traveling is also a passion, I can pick up and go whenever I wish for as long as I wish. I work online so I can take my work with me if it fits into my fun travels. It was very difficult, time consuming, to build my life for myself. It was also very much worth it to become the free spirit I had dreamed of being.

I've encountered a host of millennials whose personal relationships are almost exclusively restricted to social media. As a result they're clueless when it comes real life interactions and relationships, yet they think they have it all figured out and that the entire world revolves around them. It's a warped perspective, and I honestly believe that if they were ever to lose social media they'd fall apart. The dependency is horrifying. They live in artificial digital bubbles.

I went about doing this in a different way. I knew I had been avoiding the really hard work of learning to draw. I went to art classes. But I also required myself to draw for at least be hour every day. I did or placed the drawings in a bound sketchbook. I dated them all. I am on my seventh filled sketchbook. My work has proved greatly. When the lockdowns hit, there were no more classes. I kept up the drawing and painting at home. I fixed up my studio. I started doing old master copies. I had a full life, even though I live alone. Lots of peace and joy. I also went for walks and got really good at home cooking. I lost some weight. Now that social media is so prejudiced towards my political persuasion and was censoring me, I spend much more time away from it. Thanks for the mention of Pinterest.
