It's because of the hero bro. Zwag's hero is centered into a single target damage dealer. It looks like a aoe but once the enemies spreads he'll die immediately. After all LoL have so many hero who can 1 shot that mage

Yo prof theres actually one strategy me and my friends tried out earlier: so for the five men we played SInged, Kayn, Kogmaw, Karthus, Ramus, and everyone of us brings smite. Our strategy was to clear up all lanes before the opponent could ever get close to them, thus they can't get xp from two lanes if he's on one. And it turned out positive: we won both games :D

Xerath could've gone jungle item, rely on his base damage, have a better smite much earlier than them, that'd help him later on to clear waves amd get objectives, then get nashors, hullbreaker, and full AP, abuse his superior mobility to force towers (kill pressure on 1v1, and up and leave for lane pressure elsewhere if they group up).
