Totodile and Bayleef were some of Ash's cutest Pokémon in terms of personality. As much as I wish Ash's early Pokémon evolved more often, I doubt Totodile would have had the same cute energy throughout evolution. Although a dancing Feraligatr or even Croconaw is funny to imagine.

Hehe. Totodile... The Pokémon that would go on to inspire Oshawott in a sense. His dancing was certainly adorable, and some of his battles were certainly memorable. However, I wish we could have seen him either evolve and/or bond with Ash more.

I honestly feel like it was because they wanted to keep Totodile's silly and playful personality that ultimately kept it from evolving. Because of this and it's unimpressive battle record that I found it to be less memorable than Ash's Bayleef or Quilava, even if I do think the latter evolved too late to really be notable

Ash’s Totodile arguably has the most endearing personality of all his pokemon. Its hard to decide if would be better off staying as it is and keeping its personality and dancing, or evolving and risk losing its iconic dance. A dancing crocawnaw/feraligatr that’s also a powerhouse sounds fun. They could have had it evolve at a later time like they did with Cyndaquil

Totodile should’ve evolved. I know none of his water Pokémon besides krabby evolved until Greninja but it would’ve kept with the dragon lizard theme, Charizard, Sceptile, feraligatr. It sucks he was underutilized and it’s weird we’ll never know exactly what pokeball caught him. Great video btw.

I think the reason Tododile never evolved was in order to maintain Misty's image as a Water Type Specialist. Starters way back in the early anime were heavily protected as being the aces of the reason , for Johto I remember them trying to push Feraligatr as the strongest one by having it beat a Blastoise in its debut. Had Tododile evolved , it would have dented Misty's credibility and utility on the group since well Feraligatr would have been broken af ,also as a result Ash wouldn't have had to rely on his reserves from Kanto in the League.

Other than first stage starters just being more marketable, I think the main reason he never evolved is because Ash didn't really start training his Pokemon until Hoenn

To tell the truth, in Johto it was mostly Heracross, Cyndaquil, and Bayleef. But even they felt like like supplements to the pokemon he caught in Kanto and Orange Islands

​@jetguy128 they realized they basically had to reset his team every region after this. Charizard was so overpowered early Johto they had to find a way to remove it from his team. Poor Heracross dude didn't get a single gym battle. Also I noticed in Johto league the MVPs were the Kanto starters and Snorlax. Imo the only noteworthy things the johto mons did were Heracross and Bayleef vs Magmar and Houndoom respectively

I really wish Totodile had evolved. He could've been an interesting foil to Charizard. Both are large, scaly lizards, but one is an arrogant, fiery, dragon who didn't respect Ash until he literally saved his life, and the other is a joyful, watery alligator/crocodile who loves his trainer as much as he loves dancing. Also, we could've had an actual Regional Ace, instead of just defaulting to Heracross due to being the best of an otherwise "just alright" bunch lol. 9:12 Also, I love how Totodile's effect is different to the others! Maybe even incorporating its dancing into its moves more, to give a bit more development. (Like Quilava having issues with its flames and Balyleef's overzealousness at times.)

As someone who liked the personality quirks, cute moments and generally the fun aspect of Pokémon much more than the action or themes of becoming the very best, I feel what many people miss to see with most of Ash's companions is that they aren't all always serious competitors but just enjoy travelling together on the sightseeing adventure and while getting into competitions from time to time, some Pokémon definitely have different talents than others. With Totodile I see a cheerful and funloving Pokémon who always tends to spread the fun and who is simply content with itself. That might not make for a superinteresting character trope in an adventure story but Pokémon is not just that but a kodomomuke as well, meaning there are those carefree and just plainly jolly-jokey times in it. If I had to pick a career for Totodile by simply how athletic it can be, Pokémon Contests/Pokémon Competitions sound like something Totodile would have been splendid at. Even if Totodile didn't end up at a circus and instead just found a bunch of Pokéfreinds to enjoy his times with at a lab, the character did suffice the role of complimenting other ones greatly in that and at least personally never failed to bring a smile to my face. =3

I have alot to say about Ash's Totodile... (I am writting this before watching, as my opinion has not changed in years) IN MY OPINION: Ash capturing Totodile was a mistake. This Totodile should have gone to Misty. Yes, i know Ash already lost Togepi to Misty in the Kanto saga, and Ash won the "Totodile Duel" battle, but let's forget the story of the episode because it could have always been rewritten. So, 1 major thing, Totodile was under used, greatly. For important battles... It was used in 1 Gym Battle (2 if you count the rematch), and for that battle, it was defeated easily (or in the rematch, basically used for death fodder). It was used in 2 League Matches. The 1st, Totodile got defeated without taking out a single Pokémon. And the 2nd, It defeated 1 Pokémon, and then went down in the next Round. And again, in my opinion, that 1 victory is not it's best Win.. that should go to the Battle in the Whirl Islands Tournament where it 1v1'ed and defeated a Kingdra. Admittedly, impressive! Now as for its moves... It was known for Water Gun, Headbutt, Bite, Scary Face... just very Lackluster, and the Anime itself LITERALLY touches on this. In Duplica's return episode, she battles Ash's Totodile with Ditto, which of course becomes Totodile. She calls for Hydro Pump, which... it can't use, Prompting Duplica to mention, You should train Totodile more. Given how we got the Water Pokémon Tournament and an Anime exclusive Johto Water Gym (Which btw, Totodile got defeated in), as ways to develop Misty, then i think giving Misty the Totodile would have been a great addition to her team. She could have brought out Totodile's true power, and who knows maybe towards the very end of Johto, or during the Hoenn return, Totodile would evolve into Crocanaw. (Maybe even having Feraligatr by the Alola Return). Now, what does this do to Ash? I have the perfect solution, given how Johto was an expansion of Kanto, seen with how he didn't start fresh, occasionally brought Pokémon back like Tauros, and others even later on in the series, i think after Ash brings Kingler back for the Whirl Cup Tournament, Ash decides to keep Kingler on his team this point on. Making his team after the Whirl Cup Arc: Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Cyndaquil, Bayleef, Shiny Noctowl, and Kingler. Remember, way before this he sent Heracross to Oak's Lab, and a few episodes after the Whirl Islands Arc, is Bulbasaur's return to the Lab, meaning he will have an open slot. This open slot being for, Phanpy. Kingler would have a chance to shine against either Jasmine or Pryce, since i don't want to change the Ash vs Clare match. If it was me, Ash should use Kingler against Pryce. Making Ash's team for that Gym battle, Cyndaquil and Kingler, with Kingler giving Ash a decisive Win! We could also NOT have Kingler getting fried by 3 Voltorb at the Johto League (How the 3 Voltorb guy won 8 badges, i have no clue..), letting Kingler battle against Macy, and actually picking up a Win against Quilava, but falling to Electabuzz. (Electabuzz would now be used last, so Squirtle would still get the the Final KO) Kingler's last appearance would be against Harrison, which i think could be the extra Power Ash needed to defeat Harrison. But maybe Blaziken would still just be that unstoppable.. regardless, Krabby/Kingler was minisculely used in the Kanto Saga, until the League where it had 2 battles and established itself as a Power House Pokémon. With it on Ash's team the last 40% of Johto, that could help give Kingler the time we wanted to see, and it would continue to prove it's Powerful status as a battler, right up there with Snorlax. Of course, like i said in the beginning, this is just MY OPINION! Everyone is allowed to have one... just like butthole's. Some of you might think my opinion stinks, but you can have your opinion, just let me have mine. I always wanted to see more of Kingler, and at the end of the day, i just never really liked Totodile as a Member of Ash's Team.

The writers didn't try to make Totodile good. With a poor win ratio, no Gym wins and a complete lack of development was proof that Totodile was one of Ash's most mishandled mons of all time and why a Feraligatr is more preferable than Totodile. Also, Totodile went the "Pikachu route?" Name the episode where Totodile went the Pikachu route because I sure don't remember it. Also, making way too many filler episodes in Johto is considered "trying their best"?

Also yes he needed to evolve at least once.. it would’ve made the Johto starters( YES STARTERS) have their own specific legacy compared to the ones that’s started it all. By having Totodile evolve to stage 2 he would’ve completed the trio stopping at stage 2 for Ash’s second gen starters.

While I'm fine some Pokemon just not evolving (ex. Squitle and Buizel) Totodile is one of the exceptions since I feel like there was a lot of potential there. Imagine a Feraligatr hopping around like Totodile and shaking the ground constantly. As it stands, I feel like it should've just gone to Misty since Ash caught more than 5 Pokemon this region anyway and the extra slot could've gone to Phanpy or Heracross who desprately needed it.

have ya'll ever realized that Ash never evolve his water type starter until froakie comes in? because i swear so far only Greninja was the only fully evolved starter that Ash had and it's like he has more fire types evolving than the other 2 starters

i loved the voice kayzie rogers gave Totodile in the dub, Lisa Ortiz was good as well but it didn't get much screen time under her command I feel

It's too bad Misty didn't get him. He could have shown back up fully evolved and we would have our dancy Feraligatr.
