I’m sure in retrospect he’d like to take that back if he could (cuz I KNOW it did some damage by inadvertently deconstructing former Christians) and answer with something a bit more deceptive and slimy (which is prob why you won’t hear many other famous apologists admitting that today, instead they just pretend as if they have the evidence on their side by lying like Gunter here), but the damage was already done… any objective person who isn’t either a liar or brainwashed by debilitating fear will tell you that moment was checkmate.

I've never understood the fundamentalist Christian habit of denying evolution. I was raised very Catholic, and everything I heard growing up was that the church was fine with evolution and the Genesis narrative, because the Genesis narrative is symbolic, and if God made the world in 7 days, how long is a day for God? I'm no longer religious either, but the idea that evolution and Christianity are fundamentally incompatible is just a false narrative
@VitreousVirtuosa Жыл бұрын
@@louisjov I think it would be important to note that, iirc, it was only in the like 1950s that the Catholic Church accepted evolution. And it took them like, 300 years to go "Hey, maybe trying to kill people like Galileo for disagreeing with what was in the bible by proposing heliocentrism was bad." And I would say that in this case, the qualifier Fundamentalist Christianity and Evolution are in fact, fundamentally incompatible.

That being said, I give them credit for at least seeing the writing on the wall, and being like "yeah that's pretty overwhelming evidence" You're correct in saying that hardcore bible fundamentalists make the reconciling of evolution and Christianity impossible, but when talking to people (especially Christians), we should always specify that it's only incompatible if you take the Bible word for word literally. If we say other forms of Christianity are fundamentally incompatible (something I don't agree with), it just alienates actual Christians that are actually fine with the idea of evolution, and they start to only trust the pseudoscience coming from places like PragerU and the DI, which I'm sure I don't have to explain to you, quickly causes a whole host of other issues

I just found you, and when I saw “Discovery Institute,” I thought of my friend, the late Phil Johnson, who, I think, founded it? Not sure, but he was involved. Phil was a law professor at Berkeley, and a vociferous Christian. His goal was to create enough doubt and turmoil in actual science to “drive a wedge” that Jeebus could then slip through. He told me once that you can’t believe in (his version of) the Christian worldview and assent to the evolutionary record at the same time. It had to be one or the other. So, he and his institute went to work making shit up and calling it “Intelligent Design.” He also wanted to come up with other theories about HIV AIDS. Phil was a very kind soul, and very deluded. That’s easy to do when you surround yourself with evangelicals, because their entire psychological makeup depends on delusion.

My take on Bechley is that he's not stupid: he's just a blatant liar. Or, as you could say of most creationists: his stupidity is a choice. He wants to believe his nonsense is true, regardless of whether it holds up (which it obviously doesn't). That's got to be a stressful way to live.
@Angelmou Жыл бұрын
He knows pretty much where and why he lies. This is why Bechly sometimes at least tries to be careful in how to formulate sentences, especially to put the dumb audience in a complete false sense of security. The people are sinister by intent. They let their sentences very vague sometimes so that old and young earth creationists can both identify with their authoritative circus performance. Quotemines to say the opposite of the texts by cutting very carefully out the essential part is direct proof of the mean spirited nature. IT is like I would quotemine the bible with "...there is no God" as I would claim the bible would support atheism by cutting out "the fool says..." in front of the quotation.

51:05 Complexity is the antithesis of good design. A designer is trying to shed as much complexity as possible while still performing said function at maximum efficiency possible.
@secularidiot9052 Жыл бұрын
I'm a comp sci major, and if I wanted to duplicate a segment of code, I would write the code out into a function and then just use that function. I would not just copy the entire segment and paste it somewhere else. Sure, it would be more complex, but it would cause unforeseen issues that I would need to iron out. I will always prefer a simple route over a complex one. So for these guys to gawk at the complexity of DNA and say that it must be proof of an intelligent designer makes me laugh a lung out.

Do you think it could be worth it to make a "Debunking the Discovery Institute without using Science" miniseries? At this point you've definitely amassed enough examples of them lying about their motives, about what other scientists say, about scientific definitions, etc. that a super basic fact-check style breakdown that doesn't rely on scientific knowledge basically at all would be pretty easy.
