I met a flat-earther in real life once. He showed an image posted to one of his online flerf groups, it was a map of East Africa that pointed out how the Nile starts in Uganda and flows north through Sudan and Egypt and into the Mediterranean. He thought this was a knockout blow to the globeheads, but I was confused about what his point was. Then he explained that the river flowing north should violate the law of gravity. He really thought north meant "up".

That's why we call it Denial instead of The Nile. 😎
@Krugis2 жыл бұрын
The thing that confuses me the most about this is that North exists on flerf maps too, and even points to the same place If the Nile exists and is flowing north, why would it be "up" on a globe but not a coin? I guess they really do think gravity just pulls things arbitrarily towards the south pole?
@kaluluchance63772 жыл бұрын
For all the people who clearly haven't tried using a ball and a coin to demonstrate the basic 2yearold physics at work here.......... On the coin the water would still always flow to find perfect level and obey density, taking the path of least resistance. On the ball... Well.. It is obvious the water would never stick to the ball.. And of course it would not ever flow UP. There is a reason this man is literally running from his own camera as if it is the paparazzi and glancing over each point so fast he doesn't leave enough time to provide a single compelling point of 'evidence'. 🤣 Beyond laughable.

It’s because the cult nonsense works through and heavily relies on a massive amount of distrust in the government. If you want to make a cult, target people who feel like they are in an unstable environment and use your ideas to provide some psychological stability. It will make them desperately cling to whatever belief you want, and if they decide not to believe it anymore it means they have to confront a massive part of themselves that they want to run away from. The fear of not knowing the truth. The fear of being manipulated without knowing it. This is what makes ripping yourself away from these beliefs so difficult, because often flat earth is the only coping mechanism a person might have to combat these fears. The worst part is, flat earth is ironically proof that those people’s fears are coming true. They’re clearly being manipulated, and they don’t realize it.

Then show the videos of the 2 cameras seeing differently rotating stars. With a globe that's easy, will you be able to do it with a flat earth? - Build a physical model of your flat earth with a "sun" that illuminates exactly the predicted areas of lands. Do not touch the model while it's running through 365 day/night cycles (use a motor). With a globe, that's easy. With a flat earth, well, try as many different lenses as you want...

@themalayalipetrolhead38433 жыл бұрын
@@harrypatton8269 I'm sure you might work in civil engineering, but you're not a civil engineer because you wouldn't ask stupid questions like this if you were. To begin with, you don't have to do "curvature math" for each project you do. That's why there are projections. If you're designing a motorway, you will be doing so on a map with a particular projection. Different countries use different projections. Even in the same country, different agencies use different projections based on their requirement. A projection is simply the representation of a curved surface on a 2-d plane. Every projection will have the calculations that relate it to the actual curvature. If the earth was indeed flat and I design a road on a map from point A to point B, the road will end up overshooting B. The fact that it doesn't should be enough to understand that the curvature does indeed exist. So summing it up, you don't have to do the "curvature math" each time you build something. If you draw so much as a line on a map (which always includes a projection), the math is already been done. I'll give you an exercise to verify it yourself. Take any topographic map, my friend, and drive from point A to point B and record the distance on your car. Then check the distance on the map. If it matches, the map is correct. The projection of the map (something starting with WSG or EPSG) will be written in a corner. Google that and check the calculations behind it.

Nah it’s usually much earlier than that if your parents are FEs or YECs... Some people snap out of it by high school or college but others never do. Conspiratorial thinking opens people up to believe all kinds of nonsense without good schools to teach kids to think rationally and form their own worldview based on actual facts and the scientific method. I’m so glad I was able to understand fact from fiction by kindergarten like the OP. Must be one of the lucky ones born with common sense.

I had a flat earther friend. She said that the Flat Earth theory made more sense to her. Contrary to most flat earth theories, she thought the sun moved in a spiral trajectory. When I asked her about the eclipses she said that the moon doesn't actually exist, but it's actually an image projected way up in the sky, and I was like :"How's then possible that people could see the moon even millenniums before electricity was discovered?" Her response? That all written texts made by humanity up until she was born was all fake, manipulated, hence the omnipresent conspiracy. After many times showing that I didn't believe that shit whatsoever, I told her :"I will believe it once you provide me with tangible, scientific proofs and publications." And she replied to me :"My logic is more than enough proof!" I was like "Bruh"

@Rofls Royce Yeah that's why I wrote "classic". I should have written classic internet quote 😄 German sources, however, say that the quote can not be proven, but do not rule it out as many other invented Einstein quotes. I believe that he could have said something like that, especially with regard to the Manhattan Project, since Einstein was quite bitter at that time. Like:"Die Herrschaft der Dummen ist unüberwindlich, weil es so viele sind und ihre Stimmen genauso zählen wie unsere" (The rule of the stupid is insurmountable because there are so many of them and their votes count just like ours) or "Es war abscheulich, Menschen sind eine schlechte Erfindung." ( It was heinous, people are a bad invention.") From the diary of Einstein's last girlfriend Johanna Fantova. This diary is proven by scientific authenticity and Einstein biographers agree with this. So I think there is a possibility that Einstein said something like my original quote. I just like the thought of him saying that bc I'm a huge Einstein Fan and he inspired me to study geophysics. I'm sorry for publishing a quote that is not 100% proven. Sorry for that long ass text and sadly it is my germanness that just could not take your good and true joke as it is😭😂✌

I'd like to better understand how someone gets into Flat Earth. If you have the time and inclination, I have some few questions about your experience with FE that could help me understand it better: 1. How were you introduced to the subject and what factored into your belief? For example, were you brought to FE through a religious belief, thoughts about conspiracy theories, a friend or family member sharing their beliefs, seeing a convincing video on KZbin, or a mix of factors? 2. What was your background in science education and education in general? Do you think that science education needs to improve? 3. Aside from Professor Dave, were there other science communicators or other vectors for information were helpful to you or, in retrospect would have helped you? Likewise, are there approaches or channels that seem counterproductive to you. 4. What was rewarding about Flat Earth? I imagine people have a sense of satisfaction from believing they are ahead of the curve in learning what Flat Earth tells them is a conspiracy, both ancient and soon to be exposed and discredited, but I don't want to project my expectations on to Flat Earthers. Were there any sort of 'feedback loops' that made you feel rewarded or validated for Flat Earthing?
@telescopesfs-officialchann38972 жыл бұрын
@@nkordich 1. I was driven into the flat earth conspiracy when i was fairly young. My parents were really just the main cause of it. Throughout the years when i actually a bit older (around 6 or 7) my parents started to disprove the round earth. For one example they said that "if the earth was round wheres the curve" or "if the earth was round why can we see some far cities" now the second one i was trying to tell my dad about the word "some" in the statement and he just started blabbering things to me that i dont even remember. (I apologize that was unnecessarily long.) 2. Back then i wasnt very educated in science. Main cause was (again) my parents. Told me that the books were false and did not indicate reality. When i got older and got a bit of better understanding of science i began to question flat earth. (Didnt tell my parents as back then i thought that they would scold me.) 3. Yes actually. The video made by the big think YT channel featured (Michelle thaller if im not mistaken?) About 3 proofs that debunk flat earth. The entire thing started to make sense and i began to look for more videos and dave's vid was the last straw. 4. If i am being honest i actually dont know if it benefited me or not. Back then i was that annoying little kid who kept bugging other students in my school about the earth being flat. But i think it only benefited me for not being scolded by my parents (mostly) because they are the type of parents who yell at you for something that didnt matter in the long run. Or as you people call it these days. A karen. I hope it made sense since my memories are quite blurry about those times. So long story short: kid who had bad science backround was driven into flat earth by terrible parents.

@@telescopesfs-officialchann3897 Thanks! While I've replied to many Flat Earthers, figuring out how they got to where they are with their belief is something I've looked at only from a technical aspect (what specific thing they believe that is different from what we know from physics, astronomy, etc.), rather than the personal history that led the to the belief.
