So a friend was a flat earthed, believe it or not, and I showed him this and he actually had an explanation for this. It’s still a disk, but the equator is the edge, so you can’t see the other side. I then asked him how humans would travel to the other side, and he said it must be very gently curved , that way we wouldn’t notice! All the excitement on his face died when I told him that he was describing a sphere

This has been my argument for years. I live in North America and used to be a professional photographer. As an astronomy buff, I’ve done time exposures of the stars rotating around Polaris. On my first trip to Australia, I was very eager to spend some time looking at the southern sky. We drove about four hours west from Melbourne along the Great Ocean Road to view all the rock formations along the coast one day. We stayed out there into the nighttime, where we were able to see the night sky on a moonless night with essentially no light pollution. It was the best view of the night sky I think I’ve ever experienced. While we were out there with a telescope and my Hasselblad (this was nearly 25 years ago, when I was shooting medium-format film), I did a couple of lengthy time exposures pointed toward Sigma Octantis. I can say that I’ve seen the rotation of the Earth in respect to both pole stars with my own eyes. There is no way to debunk the physical reality of that in a way that even comes close to scientific. This is one of the ways of "proving" the globe Earth that the majority of flerfers can’t or won’t respond to. As hard as those tiny little rusty gears in their heads turn, they can’t come up with an explanation that makes sense even at their level of "logic." I have to add that the other super-cool thing I discovered (that I didn’t know before my trip) was that the equatorial constellations - the ones visible from both hemispheres - all look upside-down from the Southern Hemisphere. The very first constellation I noticed at night in Australia was Orion - but he was upside-down! It makes sense when you think about it, but it blew my mind when I first saw it.
@IFS Жыл бұрын
Great comment! I experienced a similar Wow moment to yours when in the '90s I was sailing a 10m sailboat far offshore going around the top end of Aus (delivery job). That first night was clear skies and I had a complete 360° water horizon and no light pollution was my astronomy Wow experience, something that is impossible to capture even on a Hasselblad.

My theory is - and so far no flat earther refuted this - is that they never leave the basement. They certainly don't travel anywhere. I honestly think that very very few genuinely believe that the world is flat. By far the majority of Flat Earthers want to step outside mainstream society, and proclaiming to believe that the Earth is flat is their mechanism for achieving it. Being part of an antisocial subculture makes those people feel important, and it is something that has been going on forever. Goths, Skinheads, Teddy Boys, Hippys, Sloans etc. I expect they enjoy making their arguments, and become ecstatic if they can make a scientist frustrated. And is believing in a Flat Earth so very different in believing in a God? I don't think so.
@oldmusician52363 жыл бұрын
@@TrevorDennis100 I wish that were true. There will be some, but if you watch their interviews and enter into discourse with them, I think you will see that the 'feeling special' aspect is only element. I have been trying for weeks to offer explanations and logical arguments against it, and their answers indicate an almost total lack of intelligence and understanding of maths and science. If they were more intelligent, I would expect more complex and reasoned arguments. If you want to prove how smart you are, you wouldn't knowingly say something like 'the blue sky (daytime) is behind the moon' or 'There is no gravity. It is buoyancy and density'. or 'the farther away an object is , the larger the angle' It even makes children laugh. This DOES fit with a psychological NEED to feel 'special' because they never have. There is also a large community of fundamentalist Christians whose literal interpretation of Genesis is often their reason for seeking an alternative model to give them comfort. There is also a large overlap of authority-fearing conspiracy theorists in general. To them, scientists are ALL lying as part of a centuries long attempt to control us. At this point, it becomes a paranoid delusion and, as such, is almost impossible to break free from. We can't know if the universe is infinite or finite, because we can only see a spherical region with a radius of about 45.7 Billion light years, and everything that's moved past that is never going to be visible to us, due to the expansion of the universe being faster than the speed of light.

Whether or not you were meaning to be a dick at the start of this little exchange is irrelevant because you’re being a dick now. Unless you want to provide evidence that flerfs (real flerfs, not charlatan flerfs) are not mentally ill, there’s really no point in continuing this back and forth because that was the point I was trying to make. @@jawakuno1441 So the hell what, dude? Conspiracy theories are props for bad arguments because they're actually what's called a genetic fallacy. Let's imagine for a second that there is a conspiracy against the flat Earth. Maybe that's because people in power really want us to believe in a spherical Earth, because a population of people who think the Earth is flat may end up making worse pilots. They may even stop using GPS because they don't believe satellites can exist. Maybe there's some people who think that the average person needs to be snowed in order to believe it. (And given that this theory that can be refuted by the humility to do some basic observations has gained some traction, that elitist garbage sounds a little more valid, doesn't it?) Or maybe the conspiracy thinks the Earth is flat, but they, too, are actually wrong. It doesn't matter who pays Dave, or what his actual motives are. You only get to start bringing that up when you win the argument and now may want to explain why your opposition doesn't see that you have. The only thing that matters is the argument. If facts and observations are collected in a reliable way and they disprove your position, your position isn't valid. It doesn't matter if the people who disagree with you are mean, or have a profit motive. It gets worse, of course, when you realize that there are outright anarchists calling flat Earthers (and anti-vaxxers and...) dangerous nincompoops. Are they deep state shills too? How weird that "the deep state" would employ people who openly call for the obliteration of the state, any state. I mean, maybe it's a false flag or some other excuse, but what sounds more likely is that you're just wrong. The Saudi government is one of the most awful human rights-violating regimes on the planet: would you say that the sky is yellow if they said it was blue? Bad people can be right. The fact that you thought this approach should be convincing, such that you can use it as a "gotcha", is the only thing that people with critical reasoning who don't already agree with you need to see that you're not sensible. If you had arguments that could be defended without fallacies, you would make them.
@fredericchristie34724 жыл бұрын
Hampton's right. They'll just blindly claim that there are no different stars in the Southern Hemisphere. Or that there is no "true celestial pole" in the Southern hemisphere. In fact, even making the observation properly requires that you be honest enough to look at the stars and take at least a little bit of time to look at relative positions and so on. @@jawakuno1441 Nice try but these have already been explained. It's your problem that you misunderstand them. 1) Things don't fall because of density. Density is not a force. Why do less dense things go up? What is acting upon an object to make it move? Yes. Feathers do fall to the ground at 9.8m/s. Try this in a vacuum on Earth. Clearly skewing the point by misunderstanding air friction doesn't make it any more false. You can also try putting a feather on a large book and dropping them at the same time. The book should cause less air friction to act on the feather, allowing it to drop faster. neither does ignoring elastic tension in a slinky. The balloon goes up because the air is going down. No one said buoyancy wasn't real. 2) No. We didn't come up with that formula. And it DOESN'T give the same results as the more complicated version. If it did, you'd use the real formula instead. Except you don't. Because you know you'd be proven wrong. It's a parabolic measurement. Your video didn't even disprove it. 3) This video literally states "Water does not have the ability to stay piled upon itself" immediately after showing SPHERICAL water droplets. The water inside a "level" is curved. And "level" regardless of if you're speaking about water, or even a solid, say, a wooden board, does not mean it's flat. It means it's horizontally in line with the center of the Earth. "Down" is always pointing to the center of the Earth regardless of where you are on the globe. So this is where water wants to go. because GRAVITY. The video doesn't even address this whole point. 4) Except this was explained. It was just omitted from the video lol... Try again. 5) "I can't do this in my back yard to prove you wrong, so you're wrong". Sorry the universe doesn't comply to your limited resources. Unicorns would also have left skeletons (or at least fossils). Not a great example there buddy. 6) Nice temperature gauge. The second it's touched the temperature goes down. 7) Wrong. He said there's no up IN SPACE. Get it right. "Down" on Earth, is toward the center of the earth. That's because we're on a planet... Where things fall. 8) Misunderstood the point again. Earth's temperature doesn't change uniformly based on distance to the sun. It's the hottest time of year for North Americans in July. But it would be the coldest on the other end in this month. Explain this. 9) See point #5/ 10) Incorrect. I would like him to prove this one. As stated earlier in his video. ANCIENT civilizations have known the Earth was a globe. Where was NASA? Where was the Government?

Being an amateur astronomer and astrophotographer in the southern hemisphere I used my requirement to polar align my tracking mount using the southern Octans Constellation as part of my globe earth "proof" when answering FlatEarthMillionaire. He started by calling me a clown for being normal after he stated that water molecules become less dense and rise to form clouds, proving that gravity doesn't exist, so I suggested that it just proved water molecules where far less dense than a flat earther. He asked me to prove curvature, so I discussed the south celestial pole and how a tracking mount works, the fact that I cannot see mountains that should be visible from my location on a flat earth, greater circle track calculations used in aviation to calculate distance between two points, and the numerous suspension towers on suspension bridges that are measurably plumb to the ground but diverge at the top. I also suggested that if he was actually a millionaire that maybe he should spend some cash and ask Elon if he can spend a few days in orbit. He never responded and I think he blocked me.....

True story: Yesterday I was walking into Walmart just after sunset and I saw a bunch of people standing around staring at the sky. I overheard them saying "they aren't moving they can't be airplanes" and "you think they're Chinese balloons?" and "obvious UFOs!" Intrigued I followed their eyes to see what they were looking at. I noticed two bright lights above the western horizon. For a second I questioned what they could be, and then I realized what I was looking at. Jupiter and Venus. Just an example of how people can see something they aren't used to in the sky and instantly make up fantastical explanations for what they are even though the answer is simple and well recorded.
@stylesrj Жыл бұрын
Unless that's what they wanted you to think and the UFOs were disguised as Jupiter and Venus to throw off people! ...although I think there was a sci-fi story where Jupiter was a spaceship or that it was set on a spaceship the size of Jupiter.

Reports say that "During a 1994 blackout, L.A. residents called 911 when they saw the Milky Way for the first time". Wouldn't the obvious explanation for bright points of light in the night sky be "stars"? why would "chinese balloons" even be suggested? Oh, right, it must be in the USA, and the mass media has been yammering about chinese balloons so much that millions of people are now imagining that chinese balloons are everywhere. The real lesson from this anecdote is that Walmart is actually a zombie generator. Michael Moorcock wrote a set of books about Corum Jhaelen Irsei. The descriptions of the various civilizations at the beginning seem relevant.

I will never understand how they don't get that the stars are so far away. I even did an experiment myself to show why we don't see the stars move. I took a camera with a high optical zoom and zoomed in on something 1.25 kilometers away and moved the camera around slightly. Lo and behold, nothing really changed perspective at that distance. If we made that 1.25 kilometers the distance between here and Alpha Centauri, Earth's orbit would have a diameter of around a centimeter, I believe. It's something super negligible like that. Like just trying to hold the camera still because I was stupid and didn't use a tripod I was moving the camera around more than the scale Earth orbit. It's just so dumb.

I took a torchlight one evening and stood at a distance where it looked the same size as the moon. Took a photo of the torch and moon in the same picture, looking the same size. Then measured the distance of the camera from the torch, and the width of the light. I then looked up the diameter of the moon, divided it by the width of the torchlight (to get my scale factor) then multiplied that by the distance between the torch and the camera. It's a pretty rudimentary experiment, but it gave the distance of the moon from earth in the correct ballpark. Completely debunks the whole "if it's so far away, we wouldn't be able to see it" argument.
@nicktomato7 Жыл бұрын
i’m all about this example, and you’re totally on point with your own test about how far away things dont appear to move much just to be that guy, i did some math out - if we had a scale where alpha centauri was 1.25km away, the earth’s diameter would be about 1.5 micrometers. that’s about 20 times smaller than the width of the average human hair. and we’d be looking kilometers away for VERY close stars *THATS* the type of scale difference we’re talking about when we look at the stars
