Toto has always been a favorite of mine. The first Toto song I remember hearing as a child was Rosanna at 6 years old. I couldn't believe my ears, it was pop perfection. in fact I remember begging my parents to hear it again and again and then one day, I'll never forget it, my dad came home with the record. I must've listened to it a hundred times in the first week.
I've had the unique privilege of interviewing Steve Lukather and David Paich 3 times and I have to tell you, it's always amazing when the picture you've painted of a band in your head over years of listening not only matches their live performance in concert but also lives up to who they are as human beings. Luke and Paich are two of the nicest guys in the industry. Not only two of the greatest songwriters and players in history, their also wonderful story tellers.
In all of the conversations i've had with these guys you can definitely feel the respect and admiration they have for one another. When they put together their blockbuster 1982 album an essential for any collection: TotoIV, they were locked in as a band. And although their number one hit Africa has become their most popular song across the generations and also inspired entire segments of pop culure
I' 've always felt that it was the second biggest hit from the album, the #2 classic Rosanna that set the bar. A bar so high that Eddie Van Halen remarked that Toto was "collectively the best musicians on the planet
Rosanna Arquette has caught the attention of millions throughout her extensive acting career, With prominent roles in movies like After Hours, Desperately Seeking Susan, Nobody's Fool, and New York Stories.
Along the way her magnetism and piercing blue eyes have captivated several rock luminaries such as Peter Gabriel, and even Sir Paul McCartney. As As many know, : Rosanna Arquette was the muse that inspired Peter Gabriel's heart wrenching masterpiece, In Your Eyes.

I still remember when Rolling Stone magazine, in one of its many critiques ripped Toto a new one, mention Toto's "god-awful" nasal vocals and how the vocalists in Toto were so generic you couldn't really tell between Toto, or Journey or Styx. So, if you want to know why Toto isn't in the R&R HOF, look no further than Jann Wenner and his band of snobs at Rolling Stone Magazine, who somehow pretty much control the list of everyone who gets put in. Put it this way; The Edge is on the Rolling Stone list of 100 greatest guitarists. Steve Lukather is not. Nor is Pat Metheny. Luke can play rings around "The Edge" and so many who make their list.

I haven't seen the list, but if any other Jazz Fusion guys like Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, Larry Carlton or Joe Beck made that list, then there was no reason to leave off Metheny. Steve Lukather most definitely should have been on that list since it probably was Rock/Pop related - that's a total snub. As for The Edge, I guess he might not be the most technically gifted, but his highly crafted sound and innovative use of effects sound great to me and I love so many of U2's works thanks to his contributions.

@@ronbo11 most of their songs are the same 2 or 3 chord pattern over and over and he uses his effects to give the illusion the song is complicated with diverse sections...but a song structured like that can only be so great no matter the production. When I realized this, I understood why I never could quite get into U2.

My first introduction to Toto's music was their late 1970s hit, Hold The Line. Then, they were really on a roll with hits in the early 1980s with Africa and Rosanna. An outstanding group that I always felt were very underrated.

Always loved the way Toto seamlessly integrated horns, keyboard, guitars along with the vocals. Huey Lewis & The News seemed like a Toto continuation-in a very good way.

That's not an accident. Both bands were put together by "session players" - studio musicians who had to be able to walk in, read the sheet music, run through a warm up, cut their part in one take (maybe two) and call it a wrap. Genre preference, favorite style? Irrelevant. Can you play _this,_ perfectly, now? If so, you got the gig, and you'll get a call the next time that producer needs your instrument. Those types of players, when allowed to do their own thing, can usually make dangerously badass music. And they all have a buddy list, dozens deep, of equally dangerous players they can call to come play on their tracks if they need them.

Went to school with the Pocoro brothers we would do battle of the bands and they would win everytime our band would come in second now and again but they would blast all of the other bands out of the water.

Great musicians and a great hang. Watching "Count Me In" I realize again how little I know about drumming, But Jeff Porcaro on "Roseanne", wow. I was in a mobile home in law school when my roommate brings in this cassette and we played the hell out of it. Friend of mine is a drummer who met Jeff at a trade show, said the guy was so gracious to other musicians, very supportive, didn't mind spending time listening to new guys and encouraging them. Class.

Toto is amazing. Incredible players. I'll never forget the first time I heard Rosanna. Also heard Africa for the first time as well. It was the summer. No school, and it was Double Shot Tuesday on WSHE. I was 11 years old. My family lived on a canal in Miami Florida. I was on the canal with a friend in our old canoe. We had a female German shepherd named Rosanna. We hadn't gotten very far from the shore of our house when this song came on the radio. When the first chorus came around, I guess that she heard her name. Suddenly I heard a big splash in the water, and there she was. Swimming frantically to catch up with the canoe. I never knew that about Peter Gabriel. He's another of my all time favorites. Another incredible band and album from 82 that I was first exposed to that same day, was Asia.

Lukather is my favorite guitarist of all time. He is as cool as he is a genius. Toto was such an amazing collection of top tier musicians, i wish i was around to see them in their hey day. When you find out how many famous hit records they played on, and often helped write, your mind is blown. They influenced an entire generation of music. My son goes to the same high school I attended forty years ago. My locker in high school was '99,' because of the Toto song, it was unforgettable. A few weeks ago, I walked EXACTLY to that same spot I remembered so well, and yes in the exact same spot stands locker number 99.

I was in my early 20’s. It was a wonderful time. I was in nursing school, so very focused on that, but music helped me through. I loved Toto. Most of my classmates did not understand. But it didn’t matter. I hear these songs and everything is ok. This was very cool to see and hear these artists talk about their experience.

Great video! I spent a week recording a duplicate version (sans vocals) of Rosanna about 2 years ago, recreating every part as close to the record as I could. I'm a pro keyboard player, composer, arranger, producer. It was very tough, but it was so much FUN! That Toto pulled this off in the studio so quickly is incredible. There are about 5 bands I'd love to play with and Toto is definitely one of them!

I love watching these videos!!!!!! And then I just love learning about the songs of the 80's!!!!!!! The decade that was my teenage years and my memories of the songs that got me through the hard times and the good times!!!!!!!!!!!!? It's what we call the soundtrack of our youth!!!!!! I was born in 1971" So i had my parents listening to southern rock bands!!!!? And all the great songs of the 70's and then I started to think of music that i enjoyed!!!!!? So by the time that Prince put out purple rain album!!! And then Michael Jackson had put out The Awesome Album Thriller!!!!!! And I was around 12 -13 years old then!!!?" AND then i first heard the Album From Van Halen!!!! With Jump!! Hot for Teacher!!! And other songs on that album!!!!? And the guy who had the album was some older guy from just across the street from our middle school!!!!!!! And he was smoking homegrown weed that he was selling us middle school kids!!!!!!? Lol" AND he actually had the Van Halen vinyl album!!!!!! And then the old school gigantic speakers and the whole old school set-up!!!!!! And it was loud and you can't enjoy the Rock bands of that time without listening to it on 11!!!!" Lol" But anyway!!? I was living the dream when it came to music at that time in my life!!!!!!!!? And then going to the local album store!!!! Which was called the Record shop!!!! And whenever my friends moms got her social security check!? She'd send us to the store to get her a big can of bugle smoking tobacco and a few 40's of Cheap beer and then we'd head to the Record shop and buy a bunch of 45's " That's the size of the album!!! Lol" and it had the popular song on one side!!!!? And then the other side would have a random song from their album!!!!?? So we'd go back home and give her " Her beer and cigarette tobacco and roll a handful and a few joints 🤔!!? And then put the albums out and just puck one of the songs that we'd just bought and get a good buzz on and listen to the music!!!!!!!!!? And it was much better when you had to wait until the album came out and you could listen to it!!!!!! And enjoy it profusely!!!! Hello, professor I just watched this for the first time and I just want to thank you it was awesome. I could hear about Toto all night. I remember what I was doing when That album came out I was traveling in my own band trying so hard to see their concert but my schedule kept conflicting with their schedule and I could never get lucky. So I missed out on ever getting to see Jeff Pacaro on stage. One of my heros. I finally got to see Toto in Atlanta Georgia right after Jeff died. It was a very emotional night and on top of that I had the flu so bad I should have been in the hospital but I refused to miss Toto again. The air condition went out in the theater and everybody was soak and wet by the end of the concert. I was a great night even tho things didn't go my way! But on the night of the Grammy's I was so disappointed when Betty Davis Eyes won song of the year! I still curse that decision. If you have never listen to Toto's newer stuff thru the 90tys and up till now you need to honor yourself and start listening they have some awesome sounds and well written tunes. Toto is an incredible band that should absolutely be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. When a legend like the late great Eddie Van Halen described them as the greatest musicians collectively as a group you know there's truth to it. You might enjoy this Professor. I just love the enthusiasm Steve and David have for the song discussing the video shoot. They're just bursting with personal observations and little-known details. My brother's ex and I once sat up at two or three in the morning playing the album of Toto IV and full version of "Rosanna" listening to the synth solo for what she perceived as seal noises. Really enjoyed this, Hold the Line is my favourite Toto song. I met Bobby Kimball 10 years ago before his solo gig in a club in my hometown Galway in Ireland. He was very humble and I really enjoyed his set 60 per cent Toto classics, 30 per cent Motown and 10 per cent Bobby's songs. His voice is still impressive.

I remember dubbing that record onto cassette from my Dad's record when I was 10 years old. I strapped a D Cell Radio Shack player to my bike and spent an entire Summer in bliss with it. Rosanna was the first melodic guitar solo to blow my mind.

Toto's debut self-titled album was the first that I ever bought with my own allowance money. It was also one of the first bands to inspire me to pick up the guitar, even though my Hardrock buddies would tease me about it. Their musicianship floored me and I'm still a fan to this day. I was lucky enough to see the Toto IV tour. My uncle(and through him, me) was a fan of Toto since their first album and I was the fortunate one to go with him to that concert. Bobby Kimball had a cast on his leg and had to sit for the whole show, but his voice was in fine form.

Wow! I saw Survivor open for Toto in Quito-Ecuador, probably in the very early 90s. Toto was absolutely brilliant. Jeff Porcaro was no longer with them, the drummer I don’t think was Simon Phillips but was a class 1 musician as well. EVH was not exaggerating when praising these guys.

I 100% agree that Rossanna was an awesome song. I remember receiving the Toto IV CD while I was recovering from an operation at the hospital my sophomore year of high school. I wore out that CD. I will admit that (as good as Rossanna was) my favorite song on the CD was "I Won't Hold You Back". Maybe someday you'll be able to do an episode that includes that song in it. Keep up the great work.

If Toto doesn’t get in the HOF, then there oughta be a category for studio musicians - actually, I think there IS a category for sidemen there. Jeff Porcaro was probably one of the most frustrating drummers to have in a band at the time. Because of all his work in the Jingle and Recording industry, he was a "one-time" wonder. He had the distinct ability to get into the feeling of not only the song, but what the song-writers and produces wanted and lay it down the first time through. His work on Rosanna is a Drummer's Master Class in laying in a tasty groove with tasteful fills. Probably one of the most recorded drummers of the 80s....from Disco to Pop to Rock.

Steve Lukather's expiation of his solos always kind of blows me away. A complete humble-brag. Like they're no big deal, didn't rehearse the solo and then records it in one pass. As though that's not an impressive feat. Especially when the solo is amazing.

Ok, I’m getting a little carried away…..but just a little……very little. Every time I hear it I’m a 13 year old kid again spending the summer at my cousins Matt’s house in Tulsa Oklahoma having the time of my life! It was absolutely magical to me! The whole summer, and that song was everywhere! I was a shy kid from small town Oklahoma spending the summer with my older cousin Matt who was like the big brother I never had and we were running all over the streets of Tulsa, which to me seemed like NYC being from such a small town. My aunt Carol, Matt’s mom was a lounge singer who along with her husband who played guitar and sang also, were gone every night working until like 3:00am. She used to just hand us a $20 dollar bill every single day (which at that time was a chunk of money for a couple of kids!) and we would eat on that and buy other things, that may or may not have been exactly legal, to amuse ourselves with. We also were musical. I played guitar and Matt played drums and his bedroom was a converted 2 car garage which jammed in constantly. What memories this song brings back. Both aunt Carol and Matt have passed away now so every memory I have of them is extra special to me now.

“Rosanna” wasn’t just the first Toto song I remember, but the first music video I remember seeing as a child. Was crazy about both!! The beat, all the solos - of both instrument and voice, the dancing …truly rocked my 4 year old socks off. Something about Luke & Jeff especially drew my attention. That’s the first time I remember seeing drums & it began a lifelong long of drumming & a love for this band. Although there is one other musician from another band that’s been my favorite vocalist since childhood, I have to say Steve Lukather is my favorite MUSICIAN. His voice, playing, songwriting (not just for Toto)….just phenomenal. His personality & humor really seems great. They all seemed to be wonderful guys & truly the most talented band IMO. It’s great to hear these gentlemen are as cool in real life as you would imagine. Even in my older years I still have some childhood imagination left….so I also say YES, let’s give them at least one #1 week. They have at least 5 in my world, but 1 is a good start. Thanks for this story Professor, never get tired of anything Toto or it’s members.

Toto has always been my favorite band. Luke and David P. really are the most interesting guys - they must have stories for days considering how many songs they have worked on. Rosanna’s role in the Executioner’s Song is stellar.

I think "Hold the Line" might have been the first Toto song I heard, but the "Toto IV" album was truly a masterpiece and they have done some great songs over the years - actually they are among my favorite bands. They have a number of other songs with women's names in them, like "Melanie", "Pamela", "Lea", "Anna", and they are all very different. The arrangement on "Rosanna" is phenomenal!

I remember when I was a young teenager going to Odyssey Records here in Las Vegas. Their was 3 early 20's looking for ToTo's album. They were looking for Toto Dorothys Toto from the Wizard of Oz. I bought the album 5 days prior. After an hour they finally listened to the smart young and dreamy Youngling whose puberty just kicked in. It is ME incase you didn't know. Nice interview! "Rosanna" is a classic song and an undeniable earworm once you hear it again. The greatness of Jeff Pocaro's Rosanna Shuffle helped lift this song to the height it reached. His death, at the age of 38, is one of the tragedies of rock music. The dancer, Cynthia Rhodes, resembles Rosana Arquette just a little bit as well (to my mind). She looked fine in "Dirty Dancing" and in the Richard Marx video "Don't Mean Nothing". She and Marx eventually married and had kids, but were divorced in 2014. One of these days I'll need to check out that "The Tubes Video" they mentioned to see her work with that interesting group. Kenny Oretega is quite a famous choreographer and tour director. He also directed films with "High School Musical" being one that every kid born in the late 1990s/early 2000s watched incessantly. Toto where top quality writers and session musicians working with top quality production people - they couldn't miss with a project like this!

As a Toto fan, I've heard the Rosanna story too many times to count over the last 30 years😄, but the song itself is a masterpiece. I love watching Steve P. play the keyboards during his solo part. 🎹 It's a shame they never got the respect they so deserved (aside from those Grammies), because all of their albums, even the later ones being without their incredibly talented drummer Jeff P., are equally worth attention. I've seen these guys live twice now, the last one before the pandemic hitting and Steve P. retiring from the road, and they put on an incredible show.🤩

I was absolutely fascinated with the 12" single dance version of _Don't You Want Me_ which was an instrumental and my favorite version. I was so into keyboard/synth music in the early 80's before adding in rock by the middle of the decade. My friend's dad had bought that version and he gave me a cassette dub copy that I still have today.
