Every time I do an interview with an artist I always want to know their Origin story. We all want to know that. If comic book movies are any indication of our culture, we are all curious why someone was inspired to become their best self. When I interviewed Ann Wilson of Heart, I wanted to know why she ended up singing and why here sister played the guitar. Because as You’ll find, Ann Wilson actually played the guitar before her sister. What were the moments that shaped here, Your’e going to find out next. Years after Heart formed They started to take over radio. It all started with their classic debut album Dreamboat Annie. Heart's first single from the album was "How Deep It Goes" , and it didn’t receive much attention when released in Canada by the small Mushroom label in 1975. The second single, "Magic Man" (backed with "How Deep It Goes"), was first picked up for radio play by a station in Montreal while the band was on tour playing small club dates, In America, Crazy on You was the first single followed quickly by Magic Man with would become Heart’s first top ten hit and started the legend that has endured up to now. Ann Wilson and original bassist Steve Fossen and drummer Michael Derosier tell the story of the classic. As we go into the interview, I do Want to thank our sponsor Zennie Eyewear. I’m wearing a brand pair of frames today. I love them. Design your own at the link below. Here’s Ann Wilson with the story.

I went to high school with Ann. I remember sitting in her living room 55 years ago (her mother had to be home for that to happen) listening to her and Nancy sing and play - and not just guitar - between the two of them they could play all kinds of instruments. I never told her, but when she would sing Cherish by The Association my heart would just ache. Her ability to put feeling and emotion into a song was a force to be reckoned with even back then. At that time, of course, we had no idea what was to come. But the first time I heard Heart on the radio I commented how good it sounded and a friend said, "Don't you know? That's Ann and Nancy." I was surprised, but it made sense - Ann wasn't famous when singing for us in her living room, and she didn't belt out the songs back then, but that voice was still that voice and you don't forget it once you've heard it. It was really good to see Ann again through this interview because the quiet, just plain good person I knew back then is still alive and well today.

In my opinion Ann is the best female vocalist of all time. Her power across all frequencies is bonkers! Holy hell, this woman is 70! And I swear she's never ever looked more beautiful....I am NOT kidding. If she's had work done, and I'm looking for signs, it was so well done that I can't really tell. She looks incredible...I'm 47 and I'm thinking my best days are behind me. My sister is 58 and looks way older than Ann does. I almost didn't watch this because it's painful to see singers you really love, age...and most don't age well. Ann broke that mold.

Maybe the reason I wasn’t thinking of it is I’ve mainly seen those that are poorly done. I bet she had one or two of those because she doesn’t look anywhere close to 70. No way. That said, she looks incredible. Fillers and Botox have been at a minimum which is the only way to go, IMO. Too many people end up looking nothing like themselves. Ann looks as if she’s stopped time in her 50’s. Having no gray hairs helps, too, of course.

Ann Wilson has the most powerful vocals of any woman in the business and is, hands down, my all-time favorite female vocalist! When she’s pushing her vocal limits (like she does in their song “Alone” for example), I get goosebumps from the thrill. She’s FANTASTIC! And her sister Nancy is not only a great performer on the guitar, but her gift for composition on that instrument is worldclass! And the other guitarists in Heart - the guys - have produced some of my all time favorite riffs! Heart was a band meant to be. I’m so thankful the Wilson sisters followed thru on their desire and dream to make music. I can’t imagine the world of music without them or the TIMELESS CLASSICS they’ve given us.

@@chrisclermont456 I don't think so, Stevie Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac in 1975 and Ann Wilson in 1974/75 when her career started with Heart and she made it big. Ann Wilson started singing in 1963 when she was 12 and was a member of the group "White Heart" for a time, then changed the group's name several times before they became "Heart" in 1974. Before this time, neither one were heard of and there are many famous singers that start long before they become famous. Yes very representative. If you play Heart Greatest Hits, maybe you already understand a lot about the hard rock musical approach of the 70s including the influences, arrangements... and the recording production & mixing style (to my ear often fairly isolated, clean clear dry sounds with very precise and formal-sounding overdubs - kind of the antithesis of a live recorded version which tended to blend together more and have more 'human feel' to it.)

Underrated??? Heart was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. But R.E.M. was inducted in 2006. Can you believe that crap. This caught everyone by surprise as people thought more prestigious bands should have been inducted first. R.E.M. made it into the Rock In Roll Hall of Fame during the first induction. Their first hit was in 1981. Heart had already made a name for themselves as a being a major rock n roll band before R.E.M with popular hits of Magic Man, Dreamboat Annie, Barracuda, Crazy on You, Little Queen, and others. Heart has definitely achieved alot more success as a band than R.E.M. and they are still a main band on classic rock stations.

2 Key Points: 1) Ann is just SUCH a cool Spirit! Love her energy, outlook on life, she's just someone you could hang-out with for a looooong time and enjoy. 2) It's NO surprise that Ann is one of the best female vocalists of all time, and best vocalists of any category. She just naturally sounds amazing. Like Jim Morrison, she doesn't even need to sing!! - I could listen to her talk for hours...even her speech is MUSIC!! Such an amazing woman. Best wishes to you Ann, and Gods bless for all the lives you have enriched with your energy and your sharing! MUCH Love!

I'd love to hear more stories about how great singers learned to sing. Everyone likes asking guitarists if they're self taught or keyboard players if they're classically trained, but I feel like singers are rarely ever asked about how they started singing. It's a beautiful mystery to unravel, how someone comes to realize they can make music with their voice, and where that simple action can take them in life.
@RobAnthonyDire

Well, I recently heard an interview or heard and speak and say that her chorus teacher taught her a technique that my mom taught me. My mom is a classically trained opera singer who taught vocal lessons. When you breathe, imagine feeling a glass of water. You feel it from the bottom up to breathe from the bottom of your stomach or diaphragm and fill it up. Never bread from the chest. You sing from the bottom up and that’s how you resonate like that

Anne Wilson is the greatest singer of all time. Her voice will echo through the ages long after we are all gone. Judging by the garbage that is considered music today. She will probably never be eclipsed. Her rendition of Battle of Evermore was also incredible.
