Steely Dan. As a kid hearing them on the radio, I found them incredibly boring. It took till I was in my 40s to "rediscover" them and give all their albums a listen. I'm not sure what triggered it - I think it was from hearing "My Old School" on the radio and realizing that I really liked it. I ended up loving and appreciating Steely Dan, and now I listen to them all the time. Their album Aja is an absolute masterpiece!

The 70s were my high school/college years and I absolutely HATED The Carpenters. Fast forward to me in my late 50s (almost 65 now😜). I was researching a little more on microphones and vocal recording techniques. I’m an amateur musician at best. Anyway, one of the videos mentioned how perfect Karen’s voice is. Sooooo, I have about 10 of their LPs and of course on Apple Music in high res. I LOVE LOVE LOVE The Carpenters. Oh, always loved Bread even back then. I have them on Lp as well. Just subscribed. Great channel. Oh, my dad is 91 so I visit him and my mom quite frequently. My mom is 88. I never new that Everything I Own was written about his father. I’m gonna have one heck of a time listening to it again.

Agree. I didn't listen in secret. I have 3 older sisters all of whom are 10 or more years older than me. I learned I could play music by ear on a recorder as a kid and to play saxophone was quite similar. Songs like "If", "We've Only Just Begun", "Colour My World", and "Killing Me Softly..." were in a big note songbook. Memories of this a those K-Tel record compilations on TV really shows my age. 😂

Sucker punch to the gut if someone you know has died or are suffering a painful breakup or separation for whatever reason. When it’s on you get a mild grin on your face remembering the end of the Goodbye Girl or feeling like your soul has been excised from your chest over a breakup or loss of someone you loved. 'Aubrey' was the Bread song that did it for me, As a heartbroken teen in the mid 80's I decided to treat myself to some new music to cheer myself up. With my limited funds I picked up two tapes from the clearout sale section of my local music shop. I picked two artists I'd never heard of in hopes of finding one good song between tham. I went home with Cosmo's Factory and The Best of Bread. I can't even remember the bitch now, but I remember thinking the guy who wote Aubrey knew my pain! Bread made life bearable, and Creedence made life worth living. That was two signifigant purchases, right there.

Well, I was born in'59 to parents both in their mid 40's (44 & 46), so their music was Perry Como, Jim Reeves, Glen Miller, Lawrence Welk, Andy Williams and grew into The Carpenters and Glen Campbell in the 60's & 70's. My taste going into my teens in the 70's was more Eagles, Journey, BTO and Bob Seger, but always had a love for the crooning of Jim Reeves. I still put on a CD remix of Ole Gentleman Jim from time to time... Yes, I bought the one album as an homage to my parents belting out 'I Fall to Pieces' or dancing to 'He'll Have to Go' in our living room while I rolled my eyes. Thanks for this. It reminds me of my love of soft, melodic tunes that my parents passed on... Yes, I love Bread and have since the 70's! :)

Bread are the quintessential representation of the mellow yet soothing and soul healing musical balm acts of the 70s. Bands like America, Firefall, England Dan and John Ford Coley, Seals and Crofts, LRB, Poco, as well as the unforgettable John Denver came under that seemingly dubious banner of 'guilty pleasures'. All these years later they all still hold a special place in my personal musical pantheon.

Good Bye Girl is such an amazing song. I was lucky enough to be the youngest of 9 and with that, I NEVER got to choose the songs we listened to. Looking back, I wouldn't trade that in for the world! Most of my friends were the the oldest or second oldest in their families, so they didn't have the benefit of growing up knowing Santana, The Beatles, Jim Croce, Grand Funk Railroad, Tower of Power, War, America, The Bee Gees (prior to their disco fame)...etc. In 8th grade I mentioned to my Jr. High Choir teach that I wanted us to sing "These Dreams" by Jim Croce...she asked "How the heck do you know about Jim Croce?" I started naming all the songs I knew and she was quite impressed, for the next 2 years, she would order sheet music and lyrics (so I could learn them) and we would talk about music and the groups I grew up listening to. Bryan Ferry came to town a couple years ago, and being a 70's rock kinda guy, was sort of familiar with Roxy Music but not a fan by the purest definition. The ticket was not all that much and at a venue that didn't charge much for parking. So I went and was totally blown away. What a talent. What an entertainer. One of my top five "sleeper concerts" for sure.

I very much disliked Bread when they started out, my finger couldn’t find the channel buttons on the radio in the car fast enough when a Bread song came on. My younger sister played the album constantly . However my future (and former) brother in law used to play guitar and sing their songs at parties, it took a bit but I warmed up to their music. My wife when I met her, loved the Bread songs so eventually I was won over completely . Once I got over myself a bit I had to admit there was more to their music than my hard rocking tastes wanted to admit at the outset, good stuff again.😎🍺☀️

"Down On My Knees" was sang by Bread's other lead vocalist James Griffin (RIP). However, David Gates wrote it with him. I think Griffin's ballad's like "Too Much Love", "Look What you've Done" and a couple others demonstrate he had ballads that were as good as a portion of David Gates's ballads. Gates had a little more of the hard rock thing going over Griffin with "Mother Freedom" and "Let Your Love Go".

I grew to appreciate them later in life and I often wish I could have a discussion with my dad about them. My dad hated Rock and Roll and did not like The Beatles which were my favorite group while I was in high school. However, after listening to Bob Will, I can see that his group was a precursor to Rock & Roll, even though my dad would not agree. Steely Dan is music genius - Aja is one of the great albums ever done (“Black Cow” is one of the greatest songs ever produced to my ears). Rush…I’ll never get this one. I just don’t get it - I love most of the popular 70s rock bands but if I never hear a Rush tune I’ll be fine. It is pure emotion, pure genius because it sings to your breaking heart, when you didn't even know just how sad you are. David's voice is on the verge of breaking, as tears upon your soul. I hear beyond the words, as he conveys the story of a soul, realizing it must lay down and die. The death comes from one splinter of a diamond, so small its cutter never knew it even fell ~ The song, is 'Aubrey' 🍃🌹

Bread should be appreciated for the beauty in their songwriting. Its like Backstreet Boys hate for being sappy. They didn't write I Want It That Way, but point is ppl hated the group for not being rock or whatever. That song was undeniably beautiful. David Crosby in the 2010s made a tweet about Ted Nugent he couldn't write a great song if his life depended upon it. Aside from Crosby's political views which probably made him speak that way, as he and Nugent's political philosophies were perhaps very different, Crosby comes from a different school of song. Beauty is very important. You can also be raving rock and be beautiful too. Eric Carmen with the Raspberries showed that. Boston's More Than A Feeling accomplished this. Blue Oyster Cult's Don't Fear the Reaper made it happen. There are people who want adrenaline and there are ppl who do not care. I love Bread because you can easily apply them to your real life. These are life events, like a lot of songs. And sometimes not but the lyrics are gorgeous and you adore it anyhow. Great songwriting. Diary and Aubrey takes you back to a childhood.

Since I'm a bit older than you, I actually remember Bread being around, although I was only 6 when they initially broke-up. My Mom always loved them, and I...well, I always liked them, but not loved them. I never disputed that David Gates had an absolutely beautiful voice, but certainly by the time I hit my teens, Bread seemed a bit...well, passé. That being said, I do like some of their songs, and this is my Top 5 by them: 1) "Everything I Own" (Yep, I agree 100% with you here; this is their best song.) 2) "If" (Truly beautiful, haunting, mesmerizing and unique. David Gates gives his greatest vocal performance ever in this song, bar-none.) 3) "Mother Freedom" (a rare rocker from them and very underrated) 4) "Baby, I'm-a Want You" (Solid song and quite affecting) 5) "Make It With You" (Subtlety sexual, and that's a good thing, says Martha. 😂) Also, in 1977, David Gates had a big solo hit with the love theme from the Neil Simon movie _The Goodbye Girl._ That's a very good song.

Aubrey is probably the most obscure single Bread ever did but I thought it was beautiful. I'm surprised at how few fans have heard it! Enjoy!

I used to abhor Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and others as my parents music. Now, I have the deepest respect for them. Bring back variety shows.

It's funny that I just ran across this video. I have been thinking back to the possibility that I just might have delivered papers to David Gates when he lived in Redding CA. I too was at the stage that I wouldn't be caught dead listening to that "lovey-dovey" music lol. I regret not having the forethought (and maturity) to have appreciated him. Today, I listen to Bread when I want to chill out.

My wife passsed away from COVID in 2020. At her memorial, as we were both fans of Bread, I had "Everything I Own" played. It still resonates with me how I too wish I could have her back one last time. Thanks for this video.

In 1976 my wife and I married and chose 3 favorite songs to carry us through our journey. Her sister sang all 3 and did a perfect job. 'If' by Bread, 'Color My World' by Chicago and 'You Are So Beautiful' by Joe Cocker. One falsetto and two amazing baritones (Color My World sung by Terry Kath)

You talk about songs I'm prety sure I don't care about, and I have to say, I stick around beause the details you provide as a background to the songs I grew up with makes these bands fascinating. It's a wonder we have any music at all, what with producers milking every last bit of talent out of band members (sometimes not paying them much at all), drama within the band itself, and all the rest. And somehow, through fate or luck, we get some music that is absolutely amazing. Like you, I'm pretty sure I wrote off Bread as a sappy band. Let's see if I appreciate them at my age now. Convince me, Professor of Rock! P.S. Thanks for sharing with us your dad. I can feel the love. I'm truly sorry for your loss!

I'm so sorry for your loss, brother. Agree that Bread is the bomb. But my top five, maybe even the number one, would be Lost Without Your Love. That song makes me cry every time.

I came up on 70s am gold, but then became an 80s metalhead. I hated Kid Rock, but then he started doing more of a classic rock sound. I hated Beck when I first heard " loser", but then his retro-dance album in 1999, totally changed my feelings toward him. Even Madonna, never took her seriously until I heard " dear Jesse" segued into " oh father". She had partially sold me with " la isla Bonita" in 87 because of the flamenco guitar, but Like a Prayer got me on board

Look I don’t dispute that Bread often came up with very beautiful melodies of even your claim about his voice sounding angelic and welcoming. However lyrically I find their songs too often to be pablum or offensively dumb. I know that Dumb in rock is often good. Dumb with a wink or dumb as in Mindlessly juvenile or just pedestrian can go down okay as long as the song ain’t trying too hard or has some energy, humor, drive, groove etc. exhibit 1: baby I’m a want you. Throwing in the ‘a’ just so it will scan I cannot abide. Exhibit 2: If. If a picture paints a thousand words then why can’t I paint you. That one is unforgivable too.

I too am from that time. I had just entered high school and would study and do homework while listening to Bread, Carpenters, CCR, Association, America, Eagles and all the others. Larry Knechtel was part of the Wrecking Crew, he has sadly passed away. Rob Royer and David Gates are the only members extant.

I mostly liked hard rock as a teenager in the 70's, and I later loved punk rock, but I always loved Bread too-because great songwriting is great songwriting. Even the Beatles did some soft rock songs. Bread, and especially David Gates, were the kings of soft rock. I still listen to them-their "deep tracks" (non-hits) were great too.
