Profiting from Donations: Voucher Scheme Loophole

Donations to private school voucher programs (67% of private schools are religious) are eligible for a charitable deductible from the federal government.
At the same time, many states offers an in-state voucher program that gives taxpayers a full credit for donations to private school voucher programs.
Now, as a result, people in these states may actually make a profit from donating to private school voucher programs.
They receive a full tax credit from their state, and they pay lower taxes to the federal government because they’re able to deduct the donation from their reportable income.
No such loophole exists for donations to public schools.

This scheme is ridiculous. I went to Catholic school in the 80s and 90s (sadly) back when tuition was moderately priced and my parents never received a tax break, nor should they have.

In Spain not only are they "tax exempt", but also receive almost all their money directly from the government. It's cheaper than public schools. Kind of subcontracting. Almost all of them religious, of course.

I could not send my child to a school where if she sneezes the 'teachers' will say 'god bless you'. Or that prayers (ill informed guesses) are a good thing to say to others! A lot of people try to weigh up the benefits of the education aspect, I say that the fact that the faculty MUST be deluded to be there, is a BIG warning sign. Don't put your kids in harmful situations like religious schools, they may get bullied by other kids because they prefer reason and knowledge (you know the opposite to these teachers beliefs!). Deluded teacher: Now kids, we are going to learn about the science theory of evolution! Kid: Isn't that also a fact? Deluded teacher: Huh, that's what science says, but science says a lot of things that aren't true. Kid: Mom I've got to get out of this school of fools. I AGREE.

Lol, lets do that one ;) Deluded teacher: "You act like you are a genie that actually descovered that life came just by chance" YOUNG Kid: Um, science doesn't say that! Isn't that like saying Thor brings lightning because What Else Could It be, you know, argument from ignorance? Deluded teacher: Doesn't science say that? And isn't that what you believe? YOUNG Kid: Um, NO to BOTH. All evolutionists and naturalists and humanists AND atheists do not 'believe' we all came from chance! By the way where do you think life came from? Deluded teacher: My particular mythical God created us, all from nothing :) YOUNG Kid: You are SO deluded its shameful. There's NO good reason or sufficient evidence for your particular mythical God > NONE. And feelings in your heart (muscle) and ridiculous faith is not evidence or even a simple reason for ANYTHING! Learning yet? Even a YOUNG kid knows this stuff, aren't you embarrassed by your absurd beliefs in Jesus filth? And by the way thanks for pinpointing the essence of what I was talking about. Christians are the embarrassment to the evolved human mind.

Help me out a bit here, because I'm not USA-ian. If the school budget is $1,000,000 and is entirely funded on fees with top-rate tax relief (39.6%?) that still means $604,000 (60.4%) of the budget is paid privately. Compared with a public (state) school which is 100% state funded (isn't it?). So unless the per-pupil budget of the private (religious) school is more than 60.4% higher than the state school, the tax-payers in general are winners, huh? I'm not saying I approve of this tax relief - I don't. But I'm not sure it's completely correct to say the tax payer is subsidising religious schools... only in a sense. Or am I wrong?

I'm not sure. This video makes me think of those people living without school age children who complain endlessly about their tax dollars going towards their neighbor's kids education. But I get the video's point, I never considered that the majority of these vouches go towards institutions that may undermine our hard won secular values. ..So thanks. ;)

This world is becoming exactly as Jesus had already prophesied: about all those who lead and teach religions, including those of Christianity, the Pope and all his priests… “Beware of false prophets, men who come to you dressed up as sheep while underneath they are savage wolves. You will recognize them by the fruits they bear.” - (Matthew 7: 15-16) - “Do not call any man on earth ‘father’; for you have one Father and he is in heaven. Nor must you be called ‘teacher’; you have one Teacher, the Messiah.” - (Matthew 23: 9-10) - “Take care that no one misleads you: For many will come claiming my name…” - (Matthew 24: 4) - “Many false prophets will arise, and will mislead many; and as lawlessness spreads, men’s love for one another will grow cold. But the man who holds out to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the Kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the earth as a testimony to all nations; and then the end will come.” - (Matthew 24: 11-14) - “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” - (John 4: 24) - “I am the way; I am the truth and I am life; no one comes to the Father except by me. If you knew me you would know my Father too.” - (John 14: 6-7) - “When you pray, go into a room by yourself, and shut the door. Pray to your Father who is there in the secret place; and your Father who sees what is secret will reward you. In your prayers do not go babbling on like the heathen, who imagine that the more they say the more likely they are to be heard. Do not imitate them. Your Father knows what your needs are before you ask him. This is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, Your kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven, Give us today our daily bread, And forgive us the wrong we have done, as we have forgiven those who have wronged us. And do not bring us to the test, but save us from the evil one. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, for ever. Amen. For if you forgive others the wrongs they have done, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive others, then the wrongs you have done will not be forgiven by your Father.” - (Matthew 6: 6-15) - “Pass no judgement, and you will not be judged. For as you judge others, so you will yourselves be judged, and whatever measure you deal out to others will be dealt back to you.” - (Matthew 7: 1-2) - “Truly I tell you; if anyone obeys my teaching he shall never know what it is to die.” - (John 8: 51) - “Always treat others as you would like them to treat you: that is the Law and the Prophets. Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it.” - (Matthew 7: 12-14) - “I am the gate; anyone who comes into the fold through me shall be safe.” - (John 10: 9) - “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” - (Matthew 7: 21) - “I am the resurrection and I am life. If a man has faith in me, even though he dies, he shall come to life; and no one who is alive and has faith shall ever die.” - (John 11: 25-26) - “I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world” - (John 12: 47) - “Whoever then will acknowledge me before men, I will acknowledge him before my Father in heaven; and whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.” - (Matthew 10: 32-34) - “The disciples came to Jesus and asked, ‘Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven?’ He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. If anyone causes one of these little ones-those who believe in me-to stumble, It would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!’” - (Matthew 18: 1-7) - “An expert in the law, [a leading religious Pharisee] tested him with this question: ‘Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ He answered, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind. That is the greatest commandment. It comes first. The second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself. Everything in the Law and the Prophets hangs on these two commandments.’” - (Matthew 22: 35-40) - “There is no greater love than this, that a man should lay down his life for his friends.” - (John 15: 13) - "Stay awake, and pray that you may be spared the test: The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." - (Matthew 26: 41) - “And be assured, I am with you always, to the end of time.” - (Matthew 28: 20) - “One of the criminals who hung there also mocked and taunted him: ‘Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself, and us!’ But the other criminal rebuked him. ‘Have you no fear of God? You are under the same sentence as he. For us it is plain justice; we are paying the price for our misdeeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.’ And he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ He answered, “I tell you this: today you shall be with me in Paradise.’” - (Luke 23: 39-43) - “For it is my Father’s will that everyone who looks upon the Son and puts his faith in him shall possess eternal life; and I will raise him up on the last day” - (John 6: 40) - Yours always, in true Spirit and in prayer, 2gointruth, Friday the 26th of October, 2018: - (Matthew 5:14-16) - Where every minute can be a new beginning for any one of us: Here are more references for further study… - (Genesis 3: 24) - (Genesis 6: 5-6) - (Genesis 6: 11) - (Genesis 8: 21) - (Exodus 12: 17) - - (Exodus 25: 18-22) - (Leviticus 19: 18) - (Leviticus 26: 11-12) - (Deuteronomy 8: 3-4) - - (Deuteronomy 18: 18) - (Deuteronomy 29: 29) - (Joshua 22: 5) - (2 Samuel 6: 2) - - (2 Samuel 7: 12-14) - (Psalm 2: 2) - (Psalm 10: 3-7) - (Psalm 14: 1) - (Psalm 15) - - (Psalm 22) - (Psalm 66: 1) - (Proverbs 8: 17) - (Proverbs 15: 7-8) - (Isaiah 7: 14) - - (Isaiah 9: 6-7) - (Isaiah 52: 13) - (Isaiah 53) - (Isaiah 61: 1) - (Jeremiah 31: 31-34) - - (Jeremiah 47: 6-7) - (Ezekiel 28: 14-16 ) - (Daniel 7: 13-14) - (Micah 5: 4) - - (Micah 7: 6) - (Zephaniah 1: 7) - (Zechariah 9: 9) - (Zechariah 12: 10) - - (Also worth noting, are Aristotle, Confucius, Plato and Socrates, even Gandhi a humble man qualified in British Law and well-read in most all scriptures; he has also said; “You must be the change that you wish to see in the world.”) - - (Matthew 4: 19) - (Matthew 5: 10-12) - (Matthew 5:17) - (Matthew 5:19-20) - - (Matthew 5: 43-48) - (Matthew 6: 2-4) - (Matthew 7: 5) - (Matthew 7: 7-11) - - (Matthew 7: 24-27) - (Matthew 10: 32-34) - (Matthew 11: 28-30) - (Matthew 12: 30-37) - - (Matthew 23: 9-10) - (Mark 1: 9-11) - (Mark 9: 50) - (Mark 15: 4-5) - (((Luke 1: 1-4))) - - (Luke 4: 1-13) - (Luke 6: 22-36) - (Luke 6: 39) - (Luke 6: 46-49) - (Luke 9: 23-26) - - (Luke 12: 40) - (Luke 12: 48) - (John 6: 51) - (John 6: 53-58) - (John 7: 16-18) - - (John 8: 34-35) - (John 8: 12) - (John 8: 32) - (John 8: 58) - (John 10: 10-11) - - (John 10: 14-17) - (John 11: 25-26) - (John 12: 25-26) - (John 12: 44-50) - - (John 13: 20) - (John 13: 34) - (John 17: 24-26) - (((John 21: 24-25))) -

no, not really; why should a private school family get taxed twice for their child's education. you're wrong on it being unjust, but you are right on it being forced as you are forced to pay those taxes. end of the day in a voucher system the family decides where to send their children, so they can choose wither to send them to catholic school or not.

I'm an atheist, but if someone will pay less taxes to support institutions that they believe in, good for them. We shouldn't be forced to finance any school to begin with, but if I could at least choose the ones I'm supporting then all take that deal anytime.

Steve you tacitly agree to pay your taxes into the common pool when you accept the common services. You don't get to pick and choose. No one does. It wouldn't work But you're very welcome to pick up at any time and homestead your own place, one off the grid of all services, including law enforcement and fire control. Don't drive on any roads unless you built them yourself. But that's good because that way you're not faced with the hospital services you can't use. Or, you can grow up. Sheesh.

Yea, I guess the poorest people who can't afford a college education are tacitly agreeing to pay for the college education of those who can. And they're also tacitly agreeing to pay for the welfare of those who sit on it, and for the higher social security returns of those who earned more in life, and for healthcare during all the time they aren't needing it, or for the schools they won't need for the rest of their lives, etc. Yes, they live better off with less 30-40% of their income. It's all very fair and balanced, and I'm sure every single person was asked to sign a written agreement with the options to opt out.

As much of a problem this may be, that we're being forced to subsidize sillicon valley and marxist indoctrination in universities is a much more pressing matter. By several orders of magnitude. I'm also in Europe, so I actually know that you are lying. There is no Muslim invasion. There are a considerable number of refugees from majority-muslim nations...because European nations bombed their home countries. Those people didn't want to leave, but their homes are now rubble so they have no choice. "Cultural marxism" is a conspiracy theory invented by the nazis to justify their hatred of Jewish people. I won't be giving that argument the time of day. You're describing things like taxes as communist. Taxes have existed for thousands of years. Marx only lived a bit over a century ago. So you're wrong. Minimum wage, welfare etc aren't communist either. They're just how we stop poor people from dying. We need those people alive to perform basic tasks our society needs to operate. It's investment. The basis of capitalism. That's why nobody with two brain cells to rub together has a problem with any of that.

Christian schools educate kids mostly the same as public schools. There's just a Bible class that nobody takes seriously because they're teenagers who don't want to be in school. Tax dollars are spent on war - literally killing other people. If I had to choose I'd pick religious schools over military over-spending. Religious or not, kids hate school and they both teach the required material. There are bigger battles to be fought here. America's poor grasp on science is not because of private education. Their public education sucks just as much. Hell, I couldn't be bothered to learn about science until after I graduated when learning became my choice.

What you failed to realise is that if public schools had the same incentive and 'voucher' program to use. People would be flooding the public school system with donations. Do you know what salary sacrificing is? and the benefits it does to tax if you come off as a lower income earner. If the general public could donate to public schools and get all that money back in tax, interest free, I'm pretty sure we would see a vast improvement in public school results. That should be incentivised, not the indoctrination of children with religion.

I have more than a little experience with indoctrination through private fundamentalist religious schools in the U.S. as I was put through one. I know where some cracks are and how resources could be focused to really make some progress against some really evil people and expose how many of the smaller private religious schools are hot beds for sexually abusing children. We could get together at an atheist conference and have some really meaningful meetings and make real plans that reasonable people can get behind. Only problem is that atheists are more interested in demonizing straight white men such as myself than they are interested in preventing the indoctrinization and abuse of innocent children. It was a long hard road from being indoctrinated as a fundamentalist young earth creationist to becoming an atheist through reason and reading and searching for truth no matter how much it hurt. When I started going to atheist gatherings it was a really big deal for me. You can imagine my disappointment when I started seeing the same kind of dogmatic behavior among atheists as I left behind in fundamentalism. Or maybe you can't.

General Neck Beard Cool. Now all we need is about half a million dollars to pay for a lawyer and several private investigators and we can get started on efforts to expose some child abusers in fundamentalist schools. Even with a whole lot of money it would still be very hard to do what a few hundred skeptics could do with very little effort. I'm thoroughly disgusted with people who care about codes of conduct at conferences that treat adults like children while children are being abused who could be helped.

Brenda, the free market efficiently provides you with everything that you most need, except the very few things the state still does. Just look around you. Food, dental care, heating, cooling, housing, transportation, higiene, you name it. Almost all of the most important things we need have been provided to everyone all along by the market and not by the state. The few exceptions are only still there because the market is yet to overcome those state monopolies (it has already overcome most others, as it eventually does). There's also three notions to keep in mind (should be Laws actually, but I don't have names for them): 1- Anything competitive is inherently more efficient than anything non-competitive. 2- A million heads think better than a thousand. 3 - No one manages other people's money as efficiently as they manage their own. The state is not competitive, and the free market is billions of thinking heads who are directly involved in experimentation in every craft, while each gov is just a few hundred bureaucrats with their best guesses and political interests. Private businesses have to be efficient and serve their customers well, or else they die. Private schools are no exception to that (there are no exceptions to that in the free market).

But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it. Beware of false prophets, men who come to you dressed up as sheep while underneath they are savage wolves. You will recognize them by the fruits they bear.” - (Matthew 7: 12-16) - “I am the gate; anyone who comes into the fold through me shall be safe.” - (John 10: 9) - “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” - (Matthew 7: 21) - “I am the resurrection and I am life. If a man has faith in me, even though he dies, he shall come to life; and no one who is alive and has faith shall ever die.” - (John 11: 25-26) - “I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world” - (John 12: 47) - “Whoever then will acknowledge me before men, I will acknowledge him before my Father in heaven; and whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.” - (Matthew 10: 32-34) - “I am the way; I am the truth and I am life; no one comes to the Father except by me. If you knew me you would know my Father too.” - (John 14: 6-7) - “The disciples came and asked Jesus, ‘Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven?’ He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!’” - (Matthew 18: 1-7) - “For where two or three gather in my name, I am there among them.” - (Matthew 18: 20) - “An expert in the law, [a leading religious Pharisee] tested him with this question: ‘Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ He answered, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind. That is the greatest commandment. It comes first. The second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself. Everything in the Law and the Prophets hangs on these two commandments.’” - (Matthew 22: 35-40) - “There is no greater love than this, that a man should lay down his life for his friends.” - (John 15: 13) - “Do not call any man on earth ‘father’; for you have one Father and he is in heaven. - (Matthew 24: 11-12) - "Stay awake, and pray that you may be spared the test: The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." - (Matthew 26: 41) - “Teach them to observe all that I have commanded you.
