I am not on the pipes yet. I am curious though, why are these not commonly used? Maybe they are and I just don't know it but I don't think I've ever heard of them before. Seems like it would make the learning process a bit less frustrating. What are your thoughts?

Hi, I would recommend starting without drone valves. You can always add drone valves at a later date if you struggle with start/stopping the bagpipes.

I installed the valves on my three drones, and it took me a while to get the settings right, but they work fine when I stop the tune. But I've noticed that I don't hear the drones vibrate on start-up, as they do when there are no valves. I hear the note instead. Is there any adjustment to be made? Maybe I tightened it too much? thank you for your advice

Hi, yes, I think it's just a case of trying to find the right balance... sufficient air flow vs. cut-off effect.

@@kiltsmore ok thanks, I'll try to do it. Not easy !

Do they affect the tone? I worry that they will stop the reed communciating properly with the bag so you don't have the same tone and resonance compared with an open stock. No worries striking in but would be easier just to have the drones cut off neatly at the end of a tune without having to squeeze the life out the bag first (to guarantee a silent cutoff).

Hi, the valves should not influence the sound.

@@kiltsmore They’re valves, the must form a restriction?!

there is obviously a difference in airflow going to there reeds, but the reeds vibrate and sound as they do without valves. I'm sure if you hooked up sophisticated measurement equipment you'd hear a difference, possibly a minimum reduction in volume. I'm just guessing, I can't say I've noticed any difference myself.

@@kiltsmore I’ll give them a try then. How much are a set? Also do you have a MacCallum Reel pipe review anywhere?

I've never used drone valves. I was curious do drone valves help prevent drones ,especially the bass drone from closing off due to my blowing pressure. Everytime I try to use a stiffer Reed I close my bass drone Reed with my strong lungs pressure. I constantly try try to adjust my drone reed but it still just closes off with my pressure trying a stronger Reed. Will drone valves help prevent bass drone from shutting off on me.

You might be over blowing, in that case the valves aren't going to help.

try adjusting your drone bridle on the reed, pushing up or down . I had that problem w my bass drone as well
