I am going to make an argument for Enslaved, black metal's answer to death metals Opeth. They went from pure 2nd gen black metal to some very interesting proggy extreme metal. They have themes, concept albums, complicated parts, and are amazing. If not this list, then extreme prog metal for sure.

Really surprising to me that a prog-guy like Dan Briggs hasn't heard of Watchtower! Ron Jarzombek (guitar player and the principal creative force in the band) is an absolute living legend. He was doing BTBAM level stuff back in the 80s for Christ's sake. Dan, (and anyone else who doesn't know) do yourself a favor and check out Ron's solo stuff in Spastic Ink, and his other project Blotted Science. It's mind-bending stuff.

I agree. I don't understand the time constraints. some episodes 30 minutes some are 45 minutes. These weekly episodes are very interesting and I look forward to them weekly. Unfortunately these Locked Horns episodes seemed rushed. Wouldn't it have been great for Progmetal to be an hour long and try dividing it three ways. I thought the 3 waves of Prog Metal made sense. Doom Metal should definitely have gone on for an hour. There should have been Doom, Stoner/Sludge, Death Doom divisions.

@carlosykyk
@carlosykyk 4 жыл бұрын
@@THEshaggyrogers I wish Death was on the prog metal scene, and don't get me wrong, at the end of the day Chuck ended with Death as prog as possible, but honestly the fact that he started with pure death metal kind of stains it or categorize them, specially for a lot of people. To me Death us truly more a progressive band for such obvious reasons since the beginning of that proto prog death metal in Spiritual Healing until the end of the obvious progressive but not entirely album of TSOP. If you think about about almost any of these bands, they started off the bat with being progressive.

So much I want to say here. Firstly, such a huge sigh of relief to see Fates Warning above Dream Theater on the list - even though they were only even mentioned once. And that was just to say that they sounded different to someone else. Finally someone actually knows that they existed. Even though I've always loved Queensryche (until Hear in the Now Frontier) I have always had trouble seeing them as Prog Metal. They seem to constantly be included because of Mindcrime. But Mindcrime has very standard song structures, nothing very atypical. They just wrote a real (awesome) story-driven album. But then, so did WASP with "Crimson Idol". So did Avantasia with "The Metal Opera". All three of them, not prog. If you discuss one album "Rage For Order", yes, very prog metal. But it's the only album they did with so much prog elements. They went so mainstream on Empire it was almost outrageous. I would argue that Crimson Glory have more progressive metal elements ~on the whole~ than Queensryche. Firstly, Midnight's voice was more progressive than Geoff Tate. He is more exploring in singing with variety. They write some power music, songs like Azrael or Valhalla, but then sit them beside a song like Lost Reflection. They sing Red Sharks, alongside Painted Skies. These songs are vastly different to each other, and then they write songs like Transcendence. I had never heard a song like it, and probably still haven't. It's a much different song structure for a ballad. Their next album Strange And Beautiful has some more progressive stuff like Starchamber. They threw in a saxophone in "In The Mood" for goodness sake. (But then, so did Q on "The Promised Land", I guess.) Crimson Glory aren't as prog as Fates Warning - I do agree. But if you can argue for Queensryche, you can argue for Crimson Glory. That's my stance, at least. I'm disappointed to not see Tad Morose. They formed in 1991, and still releasing albums today, so they aren't a flash in the pan. Their first four albums are progressive masterpieces. They use unusual song structure, unusual time signatures, intricate guitar work, and exploring lyrical content. They fell more into a power metal sound after the 2000's album Undead, but respect for them is deserved.Go listen to Circuit Vision, But Angels Shine, A Mended Rhyme, Another Paradigm, Where Dreams Collide or Morning Sun. I mean, even the song names sound prog! I would have liked to see Leviathan in there. They had "Riddles, Questions, Poetry and Outrage" which was strong in its own right, but they had "Scoring the chapters" and "Deepest Secrets Beneath" which are too prog for me. There are other progressive metal bands that didn't get a mention, such as Heaven's Edge, Lethal, Conception, Brazen Abbot, and Antithesis, but I can see that they exist(ed) without being strong influences on the world of metal. I found it strange to note that you never mentioned that feeling of "instructional video" musicianship kind of feeling, which is a typical common theme I find in Prog Metal. Hope someone makes the effort to read my wall of text! :D

I get it that you have to cover a certain range of topics, but often its defining discussion that gets killed. When Leprous came up, I had to pause the video and go listen to The Price for the 100th time this month. Perhaps a bit young to be on the list, but already their output is impressive. Plus they were the live backing band for Ihsahn! Check them out.

+Nick Scott And right on to Dan for bringing up Sleepytime Gorilla Museum! What a weird, unique band. Very avant garde. My favorite songs of theirs are "The Donkey-Headed Adversary of Humanity Opens the Discussion", "Helpless Corpses Enactment", and "1997 (Tonight We're Gonna Party Like It's...)".

very cool discussion! I agree with a lot of it. Thank you for adding Pain of Salvation! My suggestions: Shadow Gallery (if Symphony X is, they definitely should be included) SikTh maudlin of the Well King's X (and Galactic Cowboys) Subterranean Masquerade Orphaned Land Angra (more Power Metal, with progressive elements) Burst (if Mastodon is included, they should be as well) Three (if Coheed and Cambria is included, they should be as well) Superior Zero Hour East of the Wall Agalloch (and Sculptured) UneXpect

I got to the see BTBAM/Cynic tour back in the day, and it is still one of the best shows I have ever seen. Beyond just seeing those two bands, knowing how important Paul and Sean were to the creation of modern Death Metal with them being in Death at the very beginning made it that much more special. Also, speaking of Devin Townsend, TDP and Scale the Summit were the other two bands on that show.

I think Periphery should be there 100%, they make use of complexed rhythms, wide ranged melodies and have that trademark "Djent" tone. I think they have really begun paving the way for younger prog metal bands.

I really got a kick out of the Devin comments, but I have been on the Haken bandwagon after seeing them on PNAS14 cruise twice. I was blown away. Then I went to Webster hall and saw them in the basement with about 300 people, just an amazing show. Such talented writing and performing.

Is it just me or is this the 1st Locked Horns episode where there were bands on the board that were not even mentioned. I never heard them say anything about Voivod, Gojira, or Coheed and Cambria. I have never listened to their music so I guess it gives me an excuse to spend hours on KZbin. :) I really love Opeth, Mastodon, Meshuggah, and Tool. Although they might have barely mentioned them in passing, I would think Sam and Dan would at least take time to mention their thoughts on their music. We need a petition or vote to make these episodes one hour long.

I feel that when people talk about prog metal, there are a few artists ignored, that shouldn't. Bands like Ayreon, Psychotic Walz, Redemption, Circus Maximus, Neal Morse's projects, Animals as Leaders, Cynic, Blotted Science, Spastic Ink, Watchtower, Continuo Renacer, Mekong Delta, Leprous, Spiral Architect, Fates Warning. I feel that prog genre kinda shifted, we consider a lot of stoner or rock bands prog these days, even if they don't really do "prog" stuff, but we left out a lot of bands especially if they are more fusion oriented. Maybe we should invent "fusion metal" and throw few of them into that genre.

Holy shit, I was just watching this for the first time tonight and I got goosebumps when he mentioned Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. Nobody knows them?! That is a crying shame. Their album "Of Natural History" is like one of the best things I've ever heard. Also, I've had a theory for a while that they (minorly) influenced Between the Buried and Me, so it was really amazing to hear him bring them up.

I like what they did with the original list, it was fine honestly. I'm more interested in seeing if they can expand on 'extreme prog metal' and maybe include a branch for technical death metal for bands such as Death, Gorguts, Atheist, maybe Morbid Angel? (they influenced an awful lot of Gojira afterall...)

I would politely disagree. I love Rush but their stuff isn't heavy enough to be prog metal. For me they're the definitive prog rock band along with Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, etc. Porcupine Tree, on the other hand, definitely straddles that line between prog rock and prog metal.

Naked Sun was an extremely underrated band. Rush of course at the top, Queensryche especially The Warning (probably one of the best 5 metal or overall rock albums), many classic hard rock band (Led Zep, Rainbow) have highly influenced prog metal. Porcupine Tree also masters.

There are two bands from the nineties that would deserve a mention, Edge of Sanity and Therion. Crimson is one of the best LPs of that decade, highly rated among prog and metal fans alike. Looking back at the seeds of the genre, one unavoidable band is Magma. Amazing how still today kids old enough to be Stella's and Christian's grandchildren cite them as influences.

This video is old so this comment probably wont be seen by you awesome people at Banger but i love Prog, it is easily my favorite style of music and has been for decades, and i have to comment on Coheed and Cambria because they got no love in the episode and no real discussion in the comments. I think that Coheed is vital in the discussion of Prog Metal for a number of reasons. Firstly i think that as far a whether or not Coheed is a metal band i think you can argue pretty easily that they are. What it means to be metal to me is that you must have an edge of aggression, play monstrously fast, and have some sick riffs. What it means to be prog is to be outside the mainstream, intellectual, and experimental. I think that it is a given that Coheed has all of this. They are heavy, though not always, and not always even in the same song. They are too heavy to be normal Rock, but maybe not as heavy as a lot of metal. For sure they are heavier than Hair Metal. And i think is impossible to say that they aren't prog. 90% of their songs have time changes, odd time signatures, and massively technical playing. On top of that they have literally 7 albums telling one ongoing song. For real 7 Albums ONE STORY. Who else has that? Really nobody does. and with that i rest my case that Coheed and Cambria are 100% prog and very easily arguably metal. On top of that they have been wildly influential and are still making killer albums to this day.

As for Tool, although it's one of my favorite bands, I never really looked at them as a metal band) 10) Sadist - Hyena 09) Queensryche - Rage For Order 08) Aghora - Formless 07) Alchemist - Trypsis 06) Opeth - Still Life 05) Mastodon - Blood Mountain 04) Ihsahn - Eremita 03) Voivod - Dimension Hatross 02) Cynic - Traced In Air 01) Devin Toownsend - Infinity

They're back together (albeit without Carla Kihlstedt because she lives across the country now) and they've renamed themselves Free Salamander Exhibit. Also, listen to Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. Sleep is Wrong, The Donkey-Headed Adversary of Humanity Opens the Discussion, and Angle of Repose are three of my favorites. They are truly avant-garde.
