The key fob on the video: amzn.to/304sHme
This is a step by step video on how to program a new smart key fob for 2nd Gen Toyota Prius.
Step 1.
This will program the fob to Start/stop engine while it is inserted into the key port.
1. Get into the car, close and unlock all doors and ensure the car is off
2. Insert old fob (your fob that currently works) into slot and remove it 4 times in a row, and insert it a fifth time but leave it in there!
2. Open and close driver door 6 times.
3. Remove old fob from slot. Car is in fob programming mode at this point. Red anti-theft light remains on.
4. Insert new fob and leave in the slot for a full minute. Watch the blinking red anti-theft light on the dashboard. When it stops flashing and goes dark, your new fob is all set.
5. Remove the new fob and you're done with the START/STOP portion of programming
Step 2
This procedure (steps 1. through 10.) is for chrome logo key fobs and vehicles with SKS functionality
Lock/unlock doors remotely + SMART KEY functionality
--------------------
1. Open the driver door and leave it open with no fob in slot (ensure the driver door is unlocked). Other doors can be locked or unlocked, it doesn't matter.
Complete step 2 within 5 seconds
2. Insert old fob into slot and remove it twice.
Complete steps 3. and 4. within 40 seconds of completing step 2.
3. Close and open driver door twice.
4. Insert and remove old fob once.
Complete steps 5., 6., 7. and 8. within 40 seconds of completing step 4.
5. Close and open driver door twice again.
6. Insert old fob in slot and close door.
7. Without pressing the brake, press power button, wait a second, press it again, wait a second, press it a third time to turn car back off.
8. Remove old fob from slot. You'll be in "add mode" at this point. Within 3 seconds, the car should lock and unlock doors to verify it is in add mode. (the precise number of times the car locks/unlocks the door is model specific - but it should do it at least once). If it does not cycle the locks, return to step 1. otherwise proceed to step 9.
Steps 9.a. and 9.b. should be started within 40 seconds of completing step 8.
9a: Press and hold the Lock and Unlock key (simultaneously) on the OLD/MASTER fob. (a couple of seconds should pass and the locks will cycle once. If you do not get this cycle, it is likely due to a weak CR 2032 battery in your fob. Replace the battery in your old fob and try again).
9b: Press both the Lock and Unlock key (simultaneously) on the NEW fob. Hold for about 1.5 seconds (several users have reported it being necessary to execute this step twice, if your first go around does not indicate success, try it again and execute this step twice. Please post what worked in the comments below).
9c: Within three seconds, press the lock key on the NEW fob. If successful the lock/unlock will cycle once indicating success (It may take a while for the lock/unlock cycle. I've seen it happen just as I was ready to say, "well, it didn't work". If you wait for a long time (a long time being more than a minute) and get no cycle at all, complete step 10. and test to see if the SKS functions of your new fob work. If they do, pls report that on this thread).
9d. - If you need or want to program another "new" fob, repeat steps 9. a. 9.b. and 9.c. for the next new fob. If done programming fobs, proceed to step 10.
10. To end this programming, open then close the driver's door or put the fob in the slot.

Hey Igor you are the man I’ve watched at least 30+ tutorials on the car fob reprogramming and yours was just absolutely awesome I purchased a good condition used fob from a reliable ebayer.the main Toyota dealer wanted £278 for a replacement already programmed. The used fob cost me £62 including signed for post . The programming of the replacements fob was done watching and following your instructions in the video worked 1st time. Cannot thank you enough for taking the time to post and help other people. The world needs more people like you stay safe and many thanks for your help.

My used Prius only came with one (1) key fob. Got my replacement on eBay for $109.90 w/shipping. This is the ONLY YT video that makes any sense to program it. My dealer would have gladly sold me a new fob and program it for $426. Thank you.

Short story: it worked! I had trouble with last steps of Step 2 as well. I did all of Step 2 about 6 times, with variable results. At least 3 of the 6 times I made a “programming error”, not following the steps exactly. The other 3 times I did pretty well, but the holding “Lock and Unlock” on the new fob seemed resistant. Finally on the third time (actually #6 if you include my errors) it clicked. Then I pressed “Lock” on the new fob... it clicked. I opened and closed the door and the “Smart function” has worked ever since... of course I’m only one day into this, but I’m optimistic. Thank you, Igor. Saved about $150.

I did have to remove the inner backup key to get part one to work. After removing the inner key part one worked for me in one attempt. I had to do part two multiple times. Several times it was because I did a step wrong. A couple of the other times I had trouble with the hold down lock and unlock at the same time. My original fob is damaged. Made it difficult. I perservered and eventually it worked! I now have two keys to my Prius! Locksmith wanted to charge me $213 for programming! THANK YOU!!! You are a lifesaver!

You saved me about $380 dollars. Local locksmith wanted $500, local Toyoda dealership wanted $460. I bought a replacement off Amazon for $120. Didn't think I was going to be able to do Step two because the unlock button wore off my old Fob. But following your directions exactly, EVERYTHING WORKED! It must have been enough to make an electrical connection by pressing my thumb on the copper contacts where the old fobs lock button used to be. Thank you so much for posting this.

Thanks a lot for posting this video. I needed another FOB. The dealership here in Spokane WA. wanted $280.00 for the key and $500.00 to program it. I got the FOB from Amazon for $95.00 after tax and I programed it from you post. So once again thank you so much. You saved me a hell of a lot of money.

Part 1 - no problems worked great. Part 2 - worked for me after a couple attempts, by skipping the step of pressing lock and unlock on the OLD key. After the 3 long power button presses, when I removed the old key and the door locks cycled, I went straight to pressing lock and unlock on the new key. That worked for me.

Thank you!!! If it isn’t working for you, consider which key you bought and whether it’s the right one. I tried this with an aftermarket key that I bought from amazon and everytime i did the second part, the car would lock and unlock twice and it wouldn’t work take the programming. When i bought the key with the silver logo on the back from a toyota parts vendor, this worked flawlessly on the first try.

Thank you, Igor! Your video saved me a lot of money. I followed the steps according to your video and my old Not working key fob is working now. Unbelievable the tech told me this key fob won't work anymore back in 2017 and now I decided to open it and change the battery and follow your video step by step and now SKS function is working. Your video helps save money for so many people. Your good karma will go back to you too :-) By the way, my key fob can start the engine when I put it into the slot and the key to lock/unlock the door manually. Thank you so much!

It worked!! Thank you Igor, you saved me $400. I had to do step 2 twice, but to be on the safe side, i did the entire sequence both times. The first time, lock/unlock didn't work on the new fob. I didn't hear the doors lock and unlock when i hit them simultaneously on the old fob in Step 2. NOTE: The written instructions say to do step 2 if you have a Smart key/SKS - but you need it to manually lock and unlock from the fob if you have the older version.

I took it all apart, scrubbed it with soapy water and a toothbrush, put it in rice, and it worked then trying the battery with the bare circuit board. You definitely need one working key FOB (with a new battery in it) to make this method work. Also dont go with a used or refurbished FOB. There are a lot of EBay "replacement" FOB's that are being sold. Make sure you buy the right one the color of the Toyota logo on the back side is critical. Silver lettering or logo go for about $30 more. That being said. I bought one of them and it turned out to be a USED replacement. It must be virgin new, and not paired with another car already. This is why Igor recommended getting a new key from a dealer. He shared a link somewhere in this thread. so read every comment from Igor.

Thanks Igor. You are the first and only one with clear, concise and complete instructions on how to do this. I bought two new key fobs and was successful in programming just one completely. The second key fob went through step one just fine. On step two, the very last instruction of pressing both lock and unlock buttons in unison did not work. Although I heard the locks cycle just prior to that step, upon pressing both buttons nothing happened. Tried numerous times with both two original keys and thinking perhaps the new key might do it, I tried it and failed. I’m thinking the problem is not with the key fobs but with the computer in the Prius. By the way, my key fobs do not have the silver Toyota logo on the back. Batting 500, not bad .

@@MekkelRichards No sir, I never did. I ended up loaning the car to my son in law and lost interest. As would work out he drove it for about one year and the engine finally went out with 278,000 miles in it. I junked it.

I wasnt able to do the second part. The reason could be the fact that my old fob is water damaged and part of the process was to press lock and unlock buttons on the old fob simultaneously which I couldnt do.

Hey there, When doing the keyless entry on my 2005. I press the unlock and lock buttons simultaneously for a long time and nothing happens. Everything else is working. Anyone? Thank you in advance for any guidance.

So I want to tell people a personal story that may impact you. Here it is. I had one key for my Prius. The casing (i.e. the plastic part) was falling apart. So I ordered a replacement case and switched out the electronics. Fairly simple…. except one BIG mistake. Buried inside the key housing is this little, flat, almost triangle computer chip. It is called the RFID chip. Apparently, this is a very common mistake. The upside is, without the RFID chip, you aren’t able to 1) Use the key while inserted into the slot 2) Program any other key So, if you have a set of keys that allows you keyless entry but doesn’t work when put in the slot, you are very likely missing the RFID chip. The fix? You HAVE to a dealer/locksmith. So…. try to not lose your RFID chip and/or let it break.

My old fob is completely dead due to water damage. Is there a walk around for step 9a?

Might be too late and you got it fixed. I went fishing and submerged the key in water, I fixed it but drying it. Then I disassembled the entire fob and cleaned it with alcohol propanol all the electric connections and put in a new battery. It fixed it no problems. The key was completely dead when it came out of the water.

Question. I was looking at these videos on how to program a new Keyfob yourself, but that will only work if your current Keyfob is fully functional correct? Mine (silver logo, 2005) won't unlock the doors anymore, and won't start the car unless it's directly inserted into the key slot. There is no flashing key light in the dash anymore while the car is off now, either Assuming this likely means programming my own new Keyfob wouldn't work? (Battery in old fob has already been changed; it's not a fob battery issue)

So I’ve used this twice now to reprogram my old key fob when it’s stopped working. I follow the steps but use the old fob for all the steps and it seems to work? I don’t understand why it works or why my key seemed to stop working 6 months ago and stop working again now-but this has gotten it working again. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hi, And step two, when I press the power button the first of three times, the car does not turn on the way it does in your video. When I get to the end of that step, before I get a chance to press lock and unlock at the same time on the old fob, the door has already cycled open and closed. Step one worked, and I can use the new fob to turn on the car. But neither key - not even my original - will now lock the door from outside. When I try to lock the door with the original key it just makes two very quiet Door locking sounds, but it doesn't lock the door. Any suggestions? I hate the thought of having to go to the Prius dealership to have them fix the original one. Thank you!

My original key went through the washing machine and it miraculously still worked but I opened the key, removed battery and tried to dry it out. The next day the key did not work even after I replaced the battery. Do i need to go to my dealership to buy a new key? Or can i buy a used key (to save $) and program it? I’m afraid with my original key not functioning- i wont be able to program a new key. Thanks for any suggestions!
