Changing one of the shoulder buttons to jump and pressing either x or y makes shorthopping effortless. You can just buffer the shorthop by pressing the shoulder button and y and it's pretty easy imo

this, just do this. It's insane how much easier it becomes to just consistently short hop if you bind a shoulder button to jump cause you can shoulder+x or y and it'll always short hop, instead of lightly tapping the jump button and getting arthritis once you get used to this it can help you further along as well once you get to dash attack cancel etc and instant rars

Ooooh! You mean essentially hitting 2 jump buttons at the same time? I currently play with my jump button mapped to a shoulder button, but I only use that for jumping as opposed to hitting two buttons at the same time to jump!

I've got a big double-thumb, so pressing x and y together with a pro controller is actually super easy and not at all clumsy for me. I'll take this blessing in disguise and drop practicing the usual short hop method, lol.

yeah but its worse than regular short hopping since you cant do falling aerials which can sometimes lead into combos

Infamous Pilgrim21 that’s not true. I use 2 buttons for short hoping (I use my 2 shoulder bottoms to jump with my pro controller by the way) and I can fast fall all the time with no issues.

I don't know how I didn't know this, but I have been doing shorthops the hard way this whole time. I'm almost perfect at it now but online lag can sometimes mess it up. Gunna try the easy way now

Since I use pro controller and have an extra shoulder button, I just set two shoulder buttons to jump. That way my thumb could always be on the c-stick, emulating the crawling grip for combo heavy characters.

I have my pro mapped to LZ and x as jump buttons. I primarily use the trigger but I’m more consistent when I short hop with LZ+X and the input is less clumsy than x and y. Just a suggestion. I also remapped y as a grab button

9:29 I did this in the quarter finals of my school tournament twice with a 2 stalk lead and lost to someone with above 100% damage taken with roy I was so salty with myself

Easy way to short hop, have 2 jump buttons. I use a pro controller and I use both shoulder buttons to jump while having my triggers as shield and grab.

I'm the one teaching my friends smash, and I'm surprised I'm teaching the right things! I don't seem to have added talking about b reversing and messing with platforms. I need to mention that you forgot that you can do tilts after dashing by crouching and quickly tilting the control stick then attacking.

I haven’t watched the video yet but already seeing so many comments about short hopping, if anyone’s open to a control change for just the face buttons, I have my A & X to jump so it makes it almost like pressing 1 button for a short hop. Y is special and b is the attack, may seem weird at first but I think the short hopping makes it worth it. I still have a shoulder button as jump too btw

For those struggling with short hops I use a special control set I have my L and ZL buttons for short hops and press both for one It's worked for me

Good guide but you can short hop by pressing both jump buttons. I have been using this since it was released. I have my R button on my GameCube controller set to jump and I have my ZR set to jump on my Wii Classic Controller for Brawl.

The one way I trained was I use Snake (Since he get's comboed easily) as a training partner then I practice my same combos in a perfect streak of at least 3~5 times Edit: This is outdated and Snake is no longer a good training partner, use heavyweights like DK

I say practice on mario or corrin in training at first I recommend corrin and later mario because mario is harder to hit because he is smaller because they the the weight right in the middle

Quick tip:if you use Pro controller or joycon you can put jump on B and click B with your fingernail To input shorthop :)

Press the 2 jump buttons And it will be a completely different story this is with the Pro controller make the Y button attack and the A button the jump button and that smash stick can turn to tilt stick it will make your short hop life easier I don’t know about GameCube controller it might work a different way to do the 2 jump button way that’s what I call it hope that helps

I use two buttons to do short hops and i wonder if there is really an advantage to short hop with a single button. I can do it easily while practicing but my problem is that in the middle of a fight i press the jump button too hard

You can short hop by pushing two jump buttons at the same time, if you are a non game cube controller user then you may have some big advantages in this area. I use pro controller and have a set up where my r button is jump and my l button is for grabbing. It allows me to play faster and be less afraid of mis inputting

I'm watching this current year and I do not understand turnarounds. I know how to do them but I always end up just starting a dash, is there a controller setting that makes it so that the sticks aren't as responsive?

What I do is spend around 10 minutes in training with short segments that get replaced when I master them. I just started this, so tell me if this is bad and why.

Just a nit, but I feel like that description of breversing is pretty misleading - not necessary to use a brev, you can do a turnaround input for recovery moves which is easier.

I practiced short hopping with Mario and was able to do it with a single button, but using x and y on the pro switch controller just makes short hopping too easy.

I see a comment made by Eliezer Paulino but I have small different tips. I'm personally not that good but if you do have questions then leave it below. List to do(listed in most important) 1. Pick a main, it is so important to pick a main so you understand the in and out of that character. DO NOT TRY TO LEARN MORE THAN 2 CHARACTERS! 2. Change your controls to your preference, can't play unless you feel comfortable. 3. Understand the purpose of dash dance/fox trotting, it is to stay near your opponent and bait moves. Many new players just dash dance and get hit. 4. Short hop fast fall, it is very important for characters like Lucina when trying to hit small characters like pichu. 5. Practice neutral game, combos are important but you need the small hits that lead into the bigger hits. Understand what move is safe and better for certain situations, check out ultimate frame data. 6. Reverse backair, run forward then turn back,jump forward. This is because most characters backair is better then their forward air. 7. Find a player that is on your skill level, it's less frustrating and easier to learn if both players are equal. But you can play against someone better but I don't like to rage. 8. Do not play if you are in a negative mood, you may not think it's significant but your mood affects your gameplay. 9. Understand your goal, professional or casual. The amount you'll need to practice will be different if you're trying to win a local than beat your friend(unless your friend is the best in the local area). Things that will naturally come from experience 1. Patience, do not always rush or you'll get rekt. 2. Reading, you'll get used to reading if you play enough. 3. Teching, there are methods in training mode but real teching is more realistic since you won't know when it's gonna happen. 4. Rage, you will get frustrated unless you're very chill, just take a break and come back when you feel better. 5. Mix up game, you will soon notice doing the same thing will not work and will adapt.

Fun story about this. I'm not good at smash. All of my friends were better than I did. Everytime we played smash they were taunting me. I spent a full month doing just this by replacing my gametime with smash basic training. When we met again for a lan gaming afternoon. I felt like an anime guy who spent a year in the montain. Like everybody was moving slow as hell. I don't know how to combo yet, but just landing some tilts with accuracy were enough for me to beat each one of them in 1V1 lmao. They told me : "Bro, you win only because inkling is fast" I was like : "Okay let's play the same character then" One of them picks Cloud. I gave him the first stock just to know how it feels and how to time fast falls he was like : "See how it's harder now ?" I smiled and played again by applying those basics. I beat him again and he was like : "Bro ! How can you play this game so fast ?! How do you train ?!" So thanks proguide lmao

Nice video but the short hop section is a bit meh. I've been using x and y to short hop since it got released. And well, I've never had any problems with it. I compete at several locals with this and it's going pretty good so far, doesn't bother me at all.

Something i struggle with is attacking while short hopping, do i ise the c stick to attack or just the a button

@@josef24601 I personally use the c stick for aerials and tilts. I just press x and y at the same time and then instantly move the c stick to a certain direction. Works for me

@@josef24601 Regardless of the character you use pulling aerials with right/C-stick is not only easier but better because you can pull the faster without miss inputting any other commands. Once you try back air or up air with C stick you'll never go back

Should I practice these like 10-20 minutes a day, or before each session? I didn't really see any improvements until spending 3 and half hours on one thing.

I would recommend some daily, but then maybe a little extra before an event like a tournament

X = jump A = attack Use your thumb to press both at the same time Also Y = grab It works great for me
