In Australia many areas that come under indigenous land title are designated alcohol free zones (mostly in the outback, such as Maralinga). The Temperance Movement in Australia succeeded in moving the closing time of pubs during the early to mid 20th century from between 10-11:00pm to 6:00pm. This simply led to a phenomenon known as "the 6 o'clock swill". People, (mostly men as women generally weren't allowed into public bars then) would finish work at 4 or 5pm and then smash as many beers as they could before 6pm closing time. Sadly it led to an increase in domestic violence and severe alcohol dependence. There's a big difference between sinking 8 beers in one hour or having six or 7 over a 5 hour period. It lasted for about 30-40 years depending on the rules from State to State.

When I was in Australia in the outback, I noticed that there were collections of beer cans on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. I asked someone and they said it was illegal for Aborigines to drink in some remote towns, which was a law passed by local communities / elders to try and clean up drinking problems. Instead, they would get a friend to drop them off an hour from the town in the desert, where they would get wasted then walk back. (Not sure if this is true ... ??)

During Prohibition’s first year, doctors prescribed an estimated eight million gallons of medicinal alcohol- 64 million pints. In 1931, 400 pharmacists and 1,000 doctors were caught in a scam where doctors sold signed prescription forms to bootleggers. Just 12 doctors and 13 pharmacists were indicted, and the ones charged faced a one-time $50 fine.

I lived in a house in Malibu that was originally owned by Joseph Kennedy who built it for a famous actress, I believe Gloria Swanson . It was used for booze smuggling intoCalifornia. and LA, in particular. my grandfather in Illinois owned a butcher shop out in the country and every weekend had the police come down to his cellar and drink wine, Italian style zinfandel, for free so he could sell to whomever wanted it.

The main reason for the prohibition of alcohol was the fact that Ethanol was a viable substitute for oil. Your car can run perfectly fine on alcohol and you can make it from almost everything. The oil industrie had big part in making it illegal to produce ethanol to protect their financial interests.

I love how in England after having a baby they’ll hand you a Guinness, as it’s good for you. My American friends are always surprised about that 😹 I’ve noticed growing up between Europe and the states, the approaches to alcohol are much different. Whilst in the states we’d have a sneak a sip, we grow up going to the pub even if for a hot dinner. My uncle in Europe would take me for a pint at 13 and it’s much more relaxed. Now, I’ve noticed In general it seems transport is much better and used more in Europe, so drink driving isn’t as big an issue which I’m sure factors in with age laws. But also the sort of health lifestyles and going to the gym and such isn’t as much a thing like it is in the states.

And...the "zion curtain" requirement has now been abolished. (That's what we called the wall...) And depending on the type of liquor license a business has determines if you have to stay in the "restaurant" area of the facility or are free to walk about. And, you can totally get beer on Sundays at the grocery store, and order it (or other types of alcohol) at a restaurant or bar. There have been many states I've been to that don't even serve alcohol on Sundays! Crazy.

No alcohol in Northern Canadian territories because life sucks enough without alcoholic problems yet smuggling is still a thing. I think there's the same kind of modern prohibition in areas in Alaska as well, but im not 100% sure of it. I couldnt imagine 24 hours of darkness and cold every day of the year, sounds like hell. And let's be honest, Alaska is just a part of Canada except governed by the USA and thus have the increased problems instead of being Canadian. Ill just say, im. not. surprised.

Five stars...... For Kelly Bear, on alcohol they don't put any total calories on there bottles. 57:00 you laugh but that's why we germans have such a big beer culture. The Reinheitsgebot is the oldest food law in the world and was about how to make beer so it became safe in Germany around 1660 I think. Because the water was simply not as safe . You still see the pictures of German monks on some beers, because that was their orgin. Also beer is easier to store than water. Even the romans preferred alcoholic beverages due to the fear of water contamination

Kelly, alcohol is processed by the body by turning it to sugar! Alcohol and sugar molecules are very similar!

No, it really doesn't. This isn't like a podcast by BumFuck Nobody who wants for 20 mins before getting on the guest we all came for. We came for Jim. We loved the expert th topic (usually), but we came for Jim and his friends.

In Finland prohibition lasted years 1919-1932. When alkohol was legally approved to sell again: date was 5.4.1932. First stores were open at 10:00. So: 5.4.3.2.1.0. I guess you didn't know about that.

Great podcast as usual. I haven't finished it yet so it might turn out to be shit. But Kelly had two heavy hitters in a row 1) whiskey no carbs (news to me) 2) and homeless people just want to buy booze and drugs like the rest of us.
