A serpentine tip for first-timers - yes it's very easy, but draw yourself a picture first of where the belt goes, before you take the old one off. It's harder than you think to visualize the path, when the belt is gone.

I sprayed it out off camera while filming this. It didn’t really need it. Most newer MAFs are pretty good at staying clean due to the element not being directly in the airflow stream.

Your presentations are quite complete and very informative. I have replaced the Clutch on my 2018 Forester but after about a thousand miles it now makes a noise while running and the ac does not blow that cold when sitting but will blow colder when traveling. I the clutch does release when not running as it should; however, i believer that when the original clutch failed it could have possibly damage the ac compressor. Again thanks for providing excellent content.

Would be great to have similaries/disparities of the other engine as you go -- Since I'm sure the 3.6R has some procedures that are the same and some that are different, knowing how much of this is applicable (and, even better, demonstrating on a 3.6R as a side quest in the video when they are different) would make these better and great reference for that entire generation of Outback/Legacy.

It's so odd, my 2015 3.6 Outback's PCV valve hose, with 70K miles (Changed it a couple of years ago) was so hard, and looked like it had collapsed! So, while replacing the valve, I also changed the hose. And yes, I used genuine Subaru parts. When replacing parts like this, saving $5 using other manufacturer parts is just dumb...

Question about the cabin air filter? Was the purolator filter you replaced installed incorrectly? It clearly had arrows pointing up stating direction of air flow, but I believe the direction of airflow goes from top to bottom? So should it have been installed with the arrow facing down? I realize that Subaru OEM filters don’t specify airflow direction on their filters, and instead their filter arrows distinguish the physical direction to be installed, which is why the arrow was up? I ask because I just replaced the OEM filter on my ‘13 outback, which had the arrow pointing up, with a wix filter airflow arrow pointing down, and I just want to double check that’s correct. Thanks for your time, and all of your videos!

Yo what's up with all the "OEM" Subaru components that are not actually made by Subaru? Belts, hoses, filters, bearings, plugs.......... Here in Canada, the dealership is the last place I would go for any of these parts due to price. I am assuming that you must get a special deal from your local dealer. When doing engine rebuilds, there are certain components / parts that only the dealer can provide; however most stuff is "third party" or aftermarket. Dealership prices suck up here so I go to the original manufacturer eg. NTN, NSK, Koyo, Mitsuboshi, Denso, Hitachi, Ishino, Aisin....... Let me know what the deal is down there. Thanks Lots of great info Love the videos Keep up the great work.

Does the PVC pipes you changed on this Outback 2.5, apply to the 3.6R model? I’m curious and am thinking I probably need to replace mine because I recently hit 200,000 miles. It’s humming like a bee. I love my car! I have a Legacy so I don’t think that would make any difference. I think they use the same engines either 2.5 or 3.6

The throttle body service you did is most interesting to watch. I wonder if the entire throttle body can be immersed into a liquid cleaning solution of some sort? That seems to be safer than using a spray, perhaps? I'm just wondering. I'm not sure what cleaning solution would work; I'm simply wondering if such an idea is practical.

might stick with spray as the electrical parts need/like to stay dry. my 2001 GMC is mighty picky about getting wet. [oops] Ive cleaned my throttle body on the 1997 Suburban as he did here using carb cleaner, tooth brush, blow dry with air. [being mindful of the electric parts staying dry] my subies I do pressure wash the engine bay [being careful of the electronics] & so far [several years] they are fine. but some parts will not like being immersed under or getting wet liquids. [be careful/mindful of these electric parts] *just a suggestion. things to be careful/mindful of.

When checking the engine air filter, I noticed a screen in the air box immediately after the filter. Is this a servicable item? I couldn't tell how it was held in place, so I left it alone. I replaced the PCV valve also and luckily did not crack the hose, though it is getting hard. I might order that hose as well, seems like a good idea. Last question, do you have any tips on diagnosing the auto dimming mirror? It doesn't turn on, but the compass works. When unplugged and plugged back in, I get 2 red led flashes, then nothing.

You didn't give the tensioner pulley or the idler a spin to check for smoothness. Or just replace them on general principle... 10 demerits.

As in, to make sure the single pulley itself didn't have a bearing issue?

when the pulley is not under load, you can't really know if it is still good enough. listen to the engine when you cold start it. also, a pulley of prevention is worth hours of road-side recovery...

Just curious, in older videos, and in some videos where you are talking near a toolbox, it seems like you have a garage, but lately it looks like you’re working on cars outside and needing to put up a tent. Is your garage just occupied with something else at the moment? Because it seems like it would be really inconvenient to work outside in the sun or rain.
