Project 846-3 - Original Video Game Music Recorded to Tape

About a month ago, my partner and I participated in our very first game jam (link below). It was a blast. While our game is far from perfect (I'm just happy it runs), it represented our first step on our journey to one day achieving our goal of becoming independent game developers. I handle all of the music and sound design for our projects, and this song is the title track from our game.
Our game features retro-futurism themes present throughout. That was my starting point of inspiration when composing this track. My Moog Matriarch was up to the task. The "warm" analogue sounding patch from this track represented these themes well. It sounds old in some ways, new in others. The notes are just a pattern I enjoy from the minor scale. The entire pattern starts on A and then shifts a whole-step down to G. While relatively simple, one thing I enjoyed was how the entire pattern shifts together down a whole-step relative to one another. This means the song isn't in one particular scale. Rather, the focus is on the mood created. It feels melancholic, but peaceful in a way. In a way, recording to tape amplifies these feelings and themes. A modern analogue synth recorded to tape. Retro-futurism. It all felt cohesive during the process and made sense.
For effects, the pitch-shifted, reverb, pad sounds you hear come in is the result of the Matriarch running through the Hologram Microcosm.
Anyway, those are my thoughts. This track was super fun to make. My favorite thing about composing for games is being intentional with what you want to communicate through sound design and music, and making sure that intention aligns with the rest of the elements of the game.
