The four guards were played by respected professional actors, between them they played 11 rolls in the film. They were not threatened with pay.

@@reggielacey2235 Charles McKeown, the first guard to laugh is a well known comic actor. He's worked on many shows, he played 4 different roles in The Life of Brian. Chris Langham, the guard pulling the face, well know comic actor and writer, known for his work on Not The Nine O'clock News, very big show at the time, he's better known today for downloading images of children and going to prison. Andrew MacLachlan, guard behind Brian on the right, again a well known professional comic actor and a first class Cricketer, he played 2 roles in the film. Bernard McKenna, the guard behind Brian on the left, he is a Scottish writer producer and comic actor, he's an icon within British television comedy, he's written many hours of comedy shows, he was personal friends with Graham Chapman Michael Palin and John Cleese, he's worked on Ripping Yarns and Faulty Towers. He played 4 roles in the film and was involved from day one and wasn't paid on a daily basis. None of the actors have ever said they were threatened with not being paid for laughing in scene 13. The script for scene 13 is available, as teenagers myself and friends had a script and we used to read through it, it was great fun. It includes stage direction for guards to giggle..

Another few fun facts is that the whole scene with the wife's name was adlibbed because the actor for Brian missed his cue to crawl away after the centurion took the guard away, and they the loud cackling after the wife's name being mention was actually the cameramen losing their shit.
