This episode was a nightmare, the ghost of bad repairs have been bugging me since the day I got the car. This fix was beyond my skill level, and several setbacks during the fix. Ultimate goal is to get this car to last for another 50 years, but I have to be honest, this fix will require some makeup and body filler....But the Ghost is no longer among us...

One of the fascinating cars from the era. A miniature Corvette as it were. Maxwell Smart drove one up to the headquarters of Control, fictional locale from the '60s Bond parody, American TV show GET SMART. Every year a different car for the intro...A Sunbeam, a Karman Ghia, and this beauty- the Opal GT. Wow. The amazing skills of this man... At the beginning, I thought "oh- this one's in good shape"... WRONG!

I had a 1972 imported from CA to Sweden. Bought it when I was 20 and after a couple of years started to restore it but ended up selling it due to time and space. I fitted four 8 inch woofers in a box pointing forward on top of the gas tank. They fit quite nicely, at least those not so beefy woofers. I also saw people trading places with the rear light and rear blinker on each side so that rear lights was on the outer which supposedly make the GT look wider, at least in the dark.

Tack Jonas... California imports would have been a better option for me too...but then again, I would not have had so much great KZbin material, if the car would have been in mint condition...Thanks for the tip about the real lights, that is something to be considered...

129 years ago, way back in high school..... my shop teacher got one of his friends to teach me how to lead-in panel work on an old VW we were working on. Maybe it was being taught by one of the "old boys", maybe it was the almost instant gratification..... maybe it was the lead fumes? Either way, I got pretty darned good at it. Have used those skills only sporadically over the last 25 years but it's like riding a bicycle. Seeing you melting the lead out of some of the seams here brought back a lot of old memories of dicey bodywork. It's hard to let go of those days of glory..... kids today will almost never know the highs and lows of blowing up an engine Friday night; jamming like mad to get a new engine in and the car running by Sunday night just so we can get to work on Monday. It built character.... y'know?

When I got my driver's license in 1982, the Opel GT was one of the most popular vehicles among young men. My first GT from 1969 by that time was already an example of bad repairs. Many of these vehicles were kept alive by unskilled hobbyists. Today, GTs are either unaffordable or almost impossible to save without huge expense. Nice to see that someone cares about such pathetic specimens. Thank you for the memories.

Thanks for the comment. Honestly, white is still one of the options that I have open for this GT. However, a friend of mine, experienced in classic car painting, revealed that although white is one of the most forgiving color in cars, it also hide beautiful curves effectively.....Most likely I will not end up with white....The despite the fact that white with grey/yellow/black is awesome combination.

Ok Sir you got my attention LOL A mix of Soup motors, Fitzee, Geofrey Crocker etc. man you show what guys like us, car maniacs can do in a small garages using basic simple tools. Great work Sir! Now I laughed when you thought (sarcastically) the guy who repaired this car many decades ago left a message apologising for bad repairs. I have been there wondering a lot of times what were they thinking when they did certain repairs. Well to his defence, First I'm pretty sure that when he did those repairs, he never thought in a million years that this car would still be around in 2023. The cars were built to last 5, 7 years the most and panel fit was not a priority, just get the thing out to the dealer and sell it. But as I said, you are doing a great job restoring it and I applaud your efforts. Following.
@GT1900garage
@GT1900garage 10 ай бұрын
Thanks a lot for your comment, Appreciated. Yes, Soup was the original inspiration for the channel... And I totally agree with the comment of the previous fixer, and in addition to that, they had to fix it most likely outside, no possibility to dismantle the whole car, and put it on the rotisserie. But still, leaving all the rusty parts under is something that I simply do not understand.....One would think, that in case of sports car, somewhat rare, would deserve a bit more attention and care...

I have never owned a can of worms or even opened a can of worms!! LOL. But you have, good on you. You have gone where few men dare to go and survived to tell about it. A most ingenious and excellent repair. The 15 mm misalignment on the rear was: 1) poor design/ assemble at the factory or 2) not using a frame rail machine to check chassis after the car was struck at the rear?
@GT1900garage
@GT1900garage 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. The bracket was truly a mystery. No signs for impact or re-assembly, all the panels and beams were intact, but the bracket was truly 15mm off... When I got the car, the passenger side rear bumper was bolted only to back panel, with big washer (not through bracket)... So I don´t know if that has been from the beginning.. But anyway, the alignment with the rest of the frame has been crooked for quite a long time...
@wacholder5690
@wacholder5690 9 ай бұрын
It must have had any sort of accident. 3 - 5 mm off are "french charming work methods" at Brissenaux & Lotz, where the body has been fabricated, but 15 points in the direction of e.g. a parking accident or such. And why has the rear end been "repaired" earlier anyway ?

Thanks! 👍 Yes, in this case, some of the fixes were done to so thin metal, so they have had to use brass soldering instead of welding....But yes, it is beautiful...worth saving.

Any time you are rebuilding a project as rusted and bad as this is, you have to know questions as to what you are doing creep into the mind. But take a break and clear you head and continue on. Every tough project has its problems. The figuring out those problems are part of the rebuilding effort... Thumbs Up!

Sorry, i´m too late to write something that hasn´t been written before. Brillant video. When you literally discovered all the rust at the rear end (for the viewers at least) i was shouting out "holy sh*t". What a mess. How brave to just cut off the whole panel. This Opel is giving you (and us) a hard time. Even you had to calm down and have a little break on the lake 😆 All this metal work looks so easy when you are an experienced craftsman. Also fascinating to align the whole body with the laser. But what i like the most is your attention to the small things like cleaning up everything after each work step and for example collecting the old body tin. Very careful. I really love this episode. So much entertaining and relaxing at the same time. Very well done. Can´t wait to see the next episode.

Thank you for the comment Oliver. In this episode, that task itself was a journey, and a story in itself, so the editing kinda supported that journey a bit more than previous episodes. But I have to say, that at some point I got very suspicious whether my skills were able to finish the task that I started. End result, not the best, but I think I can manage...I am very flattered about the fact that there are regular viewers that follow the journey, truly appreciated your comments.

You are right, that was a nightmare. I did not realize how bad the original was until started to taking it in to pieces. So thin and yet so complicated structure..And my welding skills did not allow me to do buttwelding....so there are some body filler needed to make it look pristine.

Thanks a lot for the comment. Yep, I have browsed Suselbeek in and out. Seven reasons : 1. Hmm, 500€ + shipping, if it would be the only panel that I need to buy...still no... 2. I am part of the generation when people used to think, if you can fix it, fix it. 3. Repro parts are as flimsy as parts that I'm cutting out, rather do my own panels with 1mm steel. 4. Trying to save as much original steel as possible, here saved 50% original 5. Laying new repro panels would not make good youtube content. 6. Challenge for trying things that I have never done before.

The early GT-AL 1900 had a chrome trim around the upper rear end. That has been ommitted later for all but the "cheap" GT-J and the 1100cc models came without it anyway. And there is a visible groove between the upper deck and the sides coming down from the roof. It was a red flag already in the 80s, when it was not present. Meant: amateurish repair after being rear-ended in most cases. Or massive rust problems.
@GT1900garage
@GT1900garage 9 ай бұрын
Yes, the lack of the groove SHOULD have been an clear indication that whole rear end needs rebuild. Actually the color as well screams for use of "non GT heritage" repairing methods.... I see that now :D

I am binge watching to catch up with videos... I hate to add this comment after all of your effort and great work, but.... If you look at the rear view of the car after your levelling up and bumper bracket alignment, then you can clearly see that the right hand roof line of the car is some what "squashed compared to the left...no? 14.22 in on the video. If you were able to split the image as shown and fold the right side over the left, then I don't think that they would match. There appears to be a more gentle slope/angle on the right above the waste line compared to the left. Maybe it is simply my eyes that are out of balance, or I am simply nit picking Carry on...as you were...
@GT1900garage
@GT1900garage 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. The roof is symmetrical, the image is somewhat skewed due to fact that it is shot about 10cm away from the center line. The stand for the laser level prevented me to take a video directly behind the center line of the car, therefore bit distorted (especially when using wide lens). However, the roof line is about 1,5mm lower on the left side, compared to the cross beam, but I think that is from the factory. Panels were laid out by hand and even though they had jigs, small deviations are possible..
