Thanks Paul, i totally agree, but sadly once you bust through the chrome the protection is gone and it'll rust pretty quickly, you could clearcoat it, but then it'd lose the brushed look.. there are some satin silver paints, maybe an option for another project some day aye. !

LOL.... I was helping a buddy out with his car last night and had to break out the electric heaters for the first time this season. Also got a little snow last night. BRRRR ! Yeah i totally agree Rick, an all black bike still needs some chrome, and i know that kind of thing is subjective, but for me it should only be small details, fasteners heads and brackets, not huge areas of bodywork. Sorry to hear the snow has arrived for you already, we've had some over the last month here and there, and small storms blowing through, so full on winter now, but shortest day is only two weeks away, then the nights are getting brigher and that's the right direction... always look on the bright side right lo.!! Take care and stay warm my friend.. Love from us both.. D&Pxx

Great job! Greetings from the states but if I was over there I guess I would say brilliant! I'm currently working on a 95 Evo Sportster. Hardtailing it going for the old school chopper look. I really like the dull aluminum finish on the rocker boxes so going with that raw look on other parts like the triple trees and engine cases. Some of them had some bad corrosion pitting. Took a 3" sanding disc on an air gun to make quick work. Worked up to a 3000 grit wet sanding and coated it with a product called surface shield made by pb blaster. The finish is exactly what I was looking for but I wish I would have waited and seen your video though cause all the searches on the tube about dulling chrome ended up with "blokes" polishing it up. Anyway the black looks fantastic. Happy wrenching. Cheers!
@Moonfleet4119 күн бұрын
Thanks for your kind feedback, i love that flat dull finish on engine casings too, and if you jjst keep it oiled and wiped down, it lasts way longer then any sealant.. It sounds like you have it licked.. but for an extra tip with dulling chrome.. it's a hard finish so the trick is to start with a course grit to bust through it, say maybe. 180, then work finer back to 2000 until you're happy... just rubbing it with a fine grit to begin with will only buff it and take ages.. Have fun and thank you again for your kind support.
@rizzo368918 күн бұрын
@@Moonfleet41 I hear ya on the sanding. Yeah for some of the rough areas I had to start with a 150 then gradually worked up to a 3000. Thanks for the tip on applying a little oil to it all. That exactly what I needed to hear! And last great job on always being so detailed in your work. It's just as satisfying watching how well you keep a clean shop and have everything organized. I learned wrenching from my grandpa when I was little and he was just as meticulous. Thought it was overkill then but now I'm the same way. Of course I'm still always looking for where I put that 10mm socket haha. Buggers just walk away on me.

Of course it can, there's a trick to is though, chrome is pretty hard metal finish and difficul to key properly, so start with a 180 grit to cut into it and bust through the shine, then use 400 and 600 grit respectively to smooth out the finish or it'll be too rough to paint...

Over a long time ive managed to find the right method to get Chrome painted... Like all paint it needs a properly good key, and that's where some people fail, it's a lot harder than mild steel obviously, even over plastic, and a 600 grit doesn't cut in enough, and scotch pads just do nothing at all... it needs a good heavy handed beasting with 180 grit to bust into the chrome, and go at it for a while to get all the shine off. then smooth that out with 400 and 600... ive found also you need to clean it with neat thinners, even heat it with a hot gun to evaporate all the residues..Then it will hold paint.. and the Second trick is to use a flexible stone chip paint, regular auto paints don't last, too brittle i find.. As for wrapping, i did have an entire project bike wrapped a few years ago, looked amazing, and gives endless options as it can be printed with anything !1. pretty expensive though aye..lol!
