Thank you for saying that! I'm glad you feel that way, although I know there are a bunch out there that are much nicer and done very well. Mine will likely be the most confusingly stock appearing one though. Haha!

Tom I really appreciate that you’re a good wholesome hearhead. Your dorky humor is fun and entertaining. I’m glad to see there are other people out there that aren’t just going “full send” on everything they do and there are people like you and I that know how to make a tasteful build. Thank you keep up the good work buddy.

You follow the best procedures to a reliable build, every step I think you are going to miss you cover just minutes later! I really like how you pay attention to the interior and exterior being stock and complete with the best second hand parts you can find if new genuine parts are not available. My favourite things are the you keep everything as stock looking as possible and gratuitous use of torque specs, I know I can't sleep unless I know my builds are correctly torqued! Keep the vids of this build flowing!

You should reconsider using the gasket as the guide to your porting. Often a gasket is intentionally sized so that its inner opening diameter is larger than the mating pieces. This keeps the edge of the gasket away from the roasting hot gases flying by. Exhaust gaskets often have a heat resistant material edged by a soft, white metal. That soft edge isn't nearly as tough as the cast iron and it can be melted. When the joint is tightened it's that metal edge that is compressed and forms the seal. If the inner edge of the seal is burned away the joint is compromised. Opening the joint to the size of the gasket can also create disruptions to the flow. Picture you have two parts that are already correctly matched and the flow between them is uniform, but the gasket is larger. This creates a very slim, shallow gap between the parts, but it hardly changes flow at all. But grinding the inside diameters of the parts to match the gasket will actually create a disruption in the flow. I have always used thin cardboard (think cereal box) to perform porting. Make a gasket without the port holes. Then apply water-based paint, machinists blue, graphite... on both surfaces and bolt them together. When you separate the halves, you'll have the perfect shape of both ports on either side of the "gasket". Now cut the ports in the gasket to the size of the largest port. (That could be either side at any point around the port.) Port to match. If you want to open the port up for better flow do that to one side first, then do the cardboard gasket trick to match the other part. Keep in mind that sometimes a slightly larger header flange is good. Anyone remember anti-reversion headers ?

One learns more from your comment than from the sales pitch up there, Lol Great idea; i'd just use thin sheet metal, brass for instance,0.20 to .040;( not that i would *EVER* waste time or money with that shite ,in a place where the speedo limito is around 75 mph!! a proper NON turbo will do perfectly for that,AND have great low end torque).

It's a great video ! I've ported many heads and seen some gains, but I wouldn't have hogged out that wastegate port so much. The wastegate is only flowing when you're overboosting. If the turbo is appropriately sized that shouldn't be so much. The wastegate's flapper valve will only flow so much anyway. Cutting the casting so thin in an area that already highly stressed (glowing !) can only be bad. If the boost gauge doesn't show increasing pressure (higher than the wastegate setting) at higher RPMs you don't have a problem that warrants the increased liability. I'd have just rounded the corners a bit. I don't mean to invalidate the video. It's still a wonderful presentation.

Beautifully chosen Turbo I was hoping you'ld pick that one to be completely honest most people would slap a 16G on it and call it good. I wish I was able to do what you and Jafro are doing. I to love turbo vehicles and I also love DSM's. Watching your guys' videos allows me to kinda see all the same dreams I had all play out. One day maybe I can upload a video of me restorng my 1989/90 Eagle Talon. It needs a lot of work but If I can get the parts and time I'll even go as far as putting the factory emmisions back on so I may experience what it was like to drive it off the showroom floor. My dream car is a bonestock 98 AWD TSi. Keep up the great work amd I am really looking forward to the rest of the videos for the sleeping giant.

I just swapped turbos in my Mazdaspeed3 and wish I had watched this first - I have a dremel and should've ported to match my gaskets :( Thanks again for another excellent video, and if my BNR S3 ever needs servicing, I'll be sure to port the EM/Turbo/DP flanges.

I bet that's a fun setup with the turbo upgrade! Sorry to hear that, I'm sure it'll be fine, but turbos do respond wonderfully to this sort of port matching and flow improvement. Have fun with your MS3!

Tom's Turbo Garage I especially like the choice of color coating for the parts. It gives it that OEM look while keeping onlookers unsure as to the originality of the mods (stock vs. modified).

Mr Ol Skül Thanks man, that was all Justin at Detective Coating. I told him I wanted that OEM look but with ceramic protection and he knocked it out of the park.
