A mindless party movie would be no problem. The issue here is that this movie inspires bad attitudes. There have been reports of people trying to immitate the movie in real live and that has lead to conflicts. The movie basically tells you, that it is totally cool to be an asshole and ruin other peoples property and life. If you gonna make a movie with an asshole, fine. But then let it have consequences or at least don't try to portray the asshole in a likeable way. Eric Cartman for example works, because he often has to face consequences for his actions.

Definitely a polarising movie. I like it, for what it's worth. A lot of people seem to not understand movies don't need likeable characters and structure. Maybe it's just me, but I prefer plotless/loose plot narratives (both in novel and film). Costa was a fucking asshole, but that was his character. I know people like him. People nobody likes, but he thinks he's great as hell. Totally narcissistic, totally a sociopath. In any case, Thomas was likeable, I thought him and Kirby had good chemistry, and the party itself was badass. People shouldn't be so uptight when watching these sorts of movies. I went in with low expectations (as I do with every movie I see for the first time) and was pleasantly surprised. But hey. Opinions.

Im sorry to say but probably most if not all of you people saying this movie was the worst or hated it, did not have a nice experience in highschool. By that statement, i mean to say you do not enjoy some wild party fun styled movies. I guess most of you are probably "nerds" and "did not have time" for wild parties judging by how you didnt watch the movie in the way it was supposed to be watch. You were supposed to watch this movie in a way of like being there and enjoying the party, feeling good and chill, and experiencing the chaos thats happening in that poor house. Thats pretty much why it was made to be a "found footage" film, they were trying to act as if this footage of the party was to be seen by other teens and see how wild the party was. There was never a hidden meaning or life lesson in the film, it was just like what i said, to simply live life to the fullest and have extreme amounts of fun. And if you think im saying this movie was awesome for me because i must be a person who wont get far, has bad grades, my future will be only to become a Mcdonald's cashier, or im not taking my studies seriously. You're wrong. I am still in highschool but i have nothing but A's and B's and soon, hopefully will be in UC to study medicine but guess what, i still go to parties to have fun. For fuck's sake, even the supposedly "nerds" and "dorks" in my school are seen in some parties having fun. Sorry for the long ass comment, i just wanted to elaborate to the people why they shouldnt just hate on a movie they didnt even watch correctly. Heres an imaginary potato :)
@MaximumMadnessStixon
@MaximumMadnessStixon 9 жыл бұрын
Soooo... Not enjoying atrocious, wildly unlikable actors means we were all "nerds"? Being put-off by constant, bizarrely-mean-spirited misogyny means we "did not have time for wild parties"? Realizing that a movie is a creatively-bankrupt attempt to cash in on dumb-teens means we're "not watching the movie the way we're supposed to"? Sorry. But no, that's not the case. The fact is, the film's an unfunny piece of trash that has nothing but constant contempt for women and anyone who doesn't fit into it's cookie-cutter demographic. I love parties, but that doesn't make the film "good" to me. It's still a shit movie, with awful acting, terrible characters and constant spewing of hatred and malice. Shit film is still a shit film, no matter whose watching it.
@elijahdeleon7463
@elijahdeleon7463 9 жыл бұрын
MaximumMadnessStixon what you said was completely subjective and you cant speak for everyone I was pertaining to. The acting was terrible? Do you know what the difference is with Characters and the Actors that play them? The characters were not meant to be likable, why do you think are they unknown/not popular in their high school? Did you seriously expect all comedies to be funny for you? because if you did expect this to be funny for everyone, then thats just sad. It certainly was not the funniest movie I've watched and certainly not near that but its comedy gold compared to Grown Ups 2 or Blended which are horrible in my opinion. Let me get back to the "terrible acting" part of this "debate" and tell you that I didnt even expect to actually sense chemistry between the main characters especially with Thomas and his girlfriend. I also dont know where you got that part with the constant spewing of hatred and malice when it was only mostly shown with Costa in a little amount of scenes. This was done also in Wolf of Wall Street and I bet you liked that movie and did not pay attention to all the hate or swearing or malice or the constant sex scenes

@elijahdeleon7463 8 жыл бұрын
dennis rourick jonah hill's character was likable? I totally disagree with you in that one. Cera's character I would've understood but the Jonah's character was even worse than Costa in Project X. At least Costa was trying to throw this epic party for his friends (and of course him) to not be losers anymore. He knew that he'd be looked at as a loser with them but he still hung out with them did he not? Jonah's character was pretty much just in it for the pussy. Totally nothing relatable with him except for the fact that he's struggling with this hot af chick.
@elijahdeleon7463
@elijahdeleon7463 8 жыл бұрын
dennis rourick Thomas and the other dude never really desired it enough to do something about it. They were just ready to graduate and get on with their separate ways. It could clearly be seen with the later on parts in the party, Thomas finally gave in to it and just rode along.

I'm just going to come out and say it... this film is perhaps the single most unfunny, unlikable, thoroughly unenjoyable and upsettingly misogynistic pieces of shit I've ever had the misfortune of seeing. For me, it trumps "Sex Lives of the Potato Men", "Fat Slags", "Disaster Movie" and others like them as perhaps the worst "comedy" I've ever attempted to sit through. Usually, a bad film doesn't stick with me. I just move on and forget about them. This is one of the rare occasions where the experience of seeing a film was so entirely unpleasant and grating, I still get angry about it when it's brought up. It's such a hateful, spiteful, nasty, black-hearted piece of trash.

***** The movie does kinda enable and even commend the actions taken, though, by celebrating it and essentially letting the characters off scot-free. "Oh, you were responsible for hundreds of thousands in property damage, a dad concerned for his son getting tased in the neck, etc... Let's put you on TV so you can talk about how your next party will be even crazier!" I'm not saying I have a problem with party movies... I have a problem with SHITTY party movies like this that don't care to give us good characters (seriously, Costa is Jar Jar level irritating, if not worse) or any sort of development and instead give us tasteless "all women are whores and bitches" dialog constantly and think that the pinnacle of comedy is sticking a dwarf in an oven. It's just sad because there is some good talent behind the camera, and they fucked up royally. Just five years earlier, we got an excellent party-film with "Superbad" (which had it's share of shocks, sure... but it balanced it with likable characters and development of the storylines and also treated most of its characters with respect), and this seemed like it was partly inspired by that film, so it's a shame this was turned out so fucking lazy, poorly made, awfully acted and needlessly mean-spirited. I was hoping it'd be good, but it just wasn't.

I hated the character, and I hated the movie for not punishing him in any way.

It seems like the writers wanted him to be the "Stifler" of the group. Except when Stifler screws over his friends for his own gain, he gets is comeuppance later. Like... you know... getting pissed on, his mom getting screwed by Finch, etc. And Costa wasn't even funny in the first place. Just loud and annoying. I was rooting for the fat kid the whole movie... what's his name... J.B.? That's another problem with the movie; the characters are extremely unmemorable. No McLovin's to be found.. :c

black god Actually, I had a great time during my teenage years. I was just as hopped up on hormones and sexual energy as anyone my age, but I had enough self-restraint and foresight to make sure none of it got in the way of my future. The problem with the movie is that The Wolf of Wall Street and The Social Network had much better party scenes, had an actual story behind them, and comedy that I actually laughed at. There is no reason to watch this movie, because there are so many others that do the same thing and do it much better.

This movie flawlessly captures social media influence, popularity, peer pressure, teenage hormones and drugs/alcohol in just 78 minutes. The fun part about it is he gains new found status and his dad gave him credit despite the costly damage. In the end he gets stuck with felonies. So he wins and loses in the grand scheme of things. I remember in 8th grade and high school my male peers would comment how they wanted a party of this kind. The very definition of a cult classic with a simple plot that propelled 2 rising stars careers like thomas and miles teller.

How can people hate this movie, i loved everything in this movie, i could feel that i was in the party and i felt all the adrenaline, i loved, and the characters were good, everything in this movie were so good, i rlly laughted and the flame thrower party hahahha and when he start burning ahhaha, i just loved the movie. I have no critical spirit at all in movies, i dont know why people are saying they were terrible characters, i never saw a movie and thought that, like i dont fucking know how to see if someone is a bad characters, the only thing i know is that this movie is fantastic

I blind bought this blu-ray for $3. I still overpaid. Plus that Costas kid had to be the most reprehensible human on the face of the planet. I shudder at the thought of his spawn one day inhabiting the same planet as mine (providing I ever spawn).

One of the worst movies ever. Fucking waste of time. This movie is a reflection of the moral decadence of teenagers and young adults nowadays. And I'm a young adult myself, pains me to see this.

People actually PAYED to see this shit??? This is the worse movie i've ever seen, it made me loose faith in humanity....more like in the future generation....There was nothing fun about this movie, it was dumb, disgusting, sexist, dirty, promoting drugs (???!!!), animal abuse. And teenagers actually think this is cool??? The dad's reaction was stupid, he was not angry at all.....Seriously, WORST MOVIE EVER!!!

Take a chill pill, the movie's not meant to inspire teenagers to do something with themselves, quite the contrary its meant to pump you up to go party and get trashed out of your mind, and sometimes being a human being requires you to get trashed out of your mind. And stop being such a youtube saint and take that stick out of your ass and go annoy other people, you obviously didn't have a fun high school experience.

Christopher Abeja But it did inspire parties .Somebody acutally died.Who goes to wild parties when they can still get grounded because they are still too young to buy a house or go to colllage? That's a stupid idea .I think if as a 15-17 year old kid I went to a party where everybody took drugs I would of never been trusted again.

What's that movie about a New Year's party that people want to go to, but people keep getting lost and distracted? At the end, Dave Chapelle is saying Elvis Costello is a necrophiliac and there's this girl who passed out and he's like, "look at her: dead, dead, dead." Because that was the only part of the movie I liked... but it was enough.

Just saw this movie tonight. FUCKING. AWESOME. It's the party that we all wish we had the balls to throw. People who can't shut their brains down and enjoy the pure escapist fun of this movie probably wore pocket protectors and used inhalers during high school and are now working 70 hours a week at some soul-draining job and have lost all sight of their inner youth.

This movie is the Hangover before the actual Hangover. Its the found camera stills made into a flick for high school kids and I really LIKED it but HATED the handycam bullshit! They must save millions by shooting like this. I wish they would at least tell you that the movie is shot handycam style.

Hey great review Jeremy! Keep it up! My favorite party movie will still be Hangover! Four friends getting this much shit faced and just tearing it up all across Las Vegas. I know some people are going to flame at me saying "that's not a party movie" but if you got a group of guys who are going all around town, partying it up, then hey, it's a party movie to me. I mean even the credits showed them at numerous parties as well.

@westoaux actually, this movie was based on a viral video on youtube, of a kid whos parents went out of town and a similar situation happened. just look up "aussie party- australia" exactly as i typed it and its the first video to pop up. :) but id say a party like this happens once a millenium.

I'd agree with this review. Project X is not an essential one to watch, but it's pretty cool when you watch it, although ridiculous towards the end. The only flaw throughout the movie was the blatant misogyny and downright generic characters (the vengeful dealer and midget were absurd) and sub-plots. Apart from that, it must be respected that this movie is portraying activities that are not abnormal at student romps - particularly the consumption of Class A drugs. It's not meant to be serious.

I hated Superbad. I only watched about half of it. I got to the "period blood" scene and it hit me that I was about an hour into the damn movie and hadn't found a single thing I enjoyed. Not only was I questioning everything in the movie up to that point, I was starting to question the decisions in my life that led to me being there during the period blood scene, which I think was the lowest point I have ever been while watching a movie. That said, would I hate this movie too?
