I’d definitely be checking that oil cooler over mate. Smoking out the dipstick tube to me says the oil is too hot. So maybe the cooler is blocked and forced a leak somewhere. I had a pipe split on my Astra Vxr oil cooler the day after I’d rebuilt the turbo 😂 nightmare! Awesome to see it running again!

I remember seeing one of these for sale back in 1999 when I was a sixth former back in England. The guy wanted 5 Grand for it and I badly wanted it. At the time I had a job at a bookstore that paid 25 bucks a week. I skipped a load of days at college to get some overtime in so I could buy it. Sadly it never happened.

Good job on finally fitting the coolant temp sensor haha. As for the oil leak, if it only starts when the engine is warm, it might be the oil cooler pipes coming out of the sandwich plate. The oil coolaer is thermostat controlled in that plate so it may be that the stat opened allowing oil to then flow to a split pipe etc. Im sure you will get it sorted, then once she is oil tight, oil change and a drive and the tappets may quieten down. If not buy zlet/zleh tappets

Hi I was one of the ones that said it was the coolant temp sensor I knew because my car had the same problems till I changed it I also had to change the engine oil and filter because it was over fuelling so much it washed the bores and all the fuel goes straight to the sump thinning down the oil which is causing the hydraulic lifters to be noisey. With the oil leak check the oil pump sandwich plate keep the videos coming especially for the gsi great cars

Nice one, I would say you fixed one of the symptoms. It runs now as that temp sensor needed replacing, i think it’s been damaged through over heating. I guess now it’s not cutting out and warming up properly but you are now experiencing the heart of the problem. Are you sure the piston rings haven’t been fried? , It’s has to be blow by, I’m still sure it’s pressurising the crankcase . Look at the facts Lumpy running, low compression, Hot combustion gasses coming out the dipstick tube, pushing oil out . Order a full gasket set and a full set of rings, crack open the Haynes manual,get it torn down buddy you can do it . 👍🏻

The smoke from the dip stick tube is crankcase gasses I.e combustion gasses getting passed the rings again suggesting a worn out engine,it doesn’t matter how many sensors you change it’ll still run like crap,a rebuild won’t cost as much as you think if you do the majority of the work you’re self if you know how plenty of guides about on here and google.

There are 2 different types of coolant temperature sensors for these engines. A black one and a blue one. I have a black sensor on my early 91 engine, it may be worth you trying a blue sensor on your engine as it's the later engine.
@projectfearn
@projectfearn 3 жыл бұрын
I think the sensor colour it dependant on whether it has traction control or not. I've double checked and this sensor seems to be the correct one :)
@MrTech1210
@MrTech1210 3 жыл бұрын
I've heard that theory before actually. Mine has traction control, it ran very poor with the blue sensor and perfect with the black. I only recently experimented with this. I've got a brand new blue sensor here from when I was trialling the 2. I'd be more than happy to send you the blue sensor for you to try, it's no good to me as the engine runs crap with it. If you'd like to try it, send me a message with your address and I'll post it to you, free of charge 😎👍🏻. If it doesn't make a difference, atleast you've ruled it out.

@@projectfearn XE’s are notorious for oil leaks. The sumps can crack too. Although, that said. They don’t leak as much oil as that unless it’s a massive crack. So I’m thinking oil filter, oil cooler sandwich plate, oil cooler hoses. They’re all on that side where the leak is.
