Cocaine and methamphetamine are well-known psychoactive drugs, but today, we will be extracting the world's most popular psychoactive drug, caffeine, from tea leaves, and we will see how pure we can get it.
Like many other people, caffeine is my favorite drug. People enjoy caffeine mainly because of its stimulant properties and how it inhibits the chemical responsible for sleepiness called adenosine.
You can make caffeine in the lab, but this is overly complicated when plants biosynthesize it; the most commonly known caffeine producer is the coffee plant, producing caffeine as a natural defense from bugs and other plants; this socially accepted psychoactive compound is found in many different plants as well such as in tea leaves. Some plants use caffeine to drug bees to make them want to come back and get their pollen; by giving a reward of drugs, the plants Pavlov bees into helping them breed, talk about a wingman.

@@WheelerScientific Hey Silly Question is it really true that why tea caffeine doesn't really effect you due to a certain molecule. If so or not; Please explain or if you are indisposed I understand, Thank You for reading regardless.

You saying the boiled tea leafs smell like fresh cedar wood really brings back memories for me. Me being a logger by day, it *really* brings back memories. I love/hate that smell for many reasons.

To get rid of the annoying filtration step (and possibly increase the yield), you should try a Soxhlet extraction if you got the glassware. Using boiling benzene as a recrystallization solvent also greatly helps getting rid of leftover tannic acid.

Dear green chemist: you can simply put coffee into boiling water, filter, boil it down and then stick it in the fridge to get a whitish precipitate of mostly caffeine. You dont need dichloromethane, just coffee, water, a source of heat, a filter and a source of cold. At room temperature, 1gr caffeine dissolves in 50ml water. At the boiling point, 1 gr dissolves in just 1.5ml water. You can directly crystallize from water then recrystallize for purity, no chemicals needed.

I HATE caffeine. I do not like the way it makes me feel. I wonder how many people feel the way I do? Anyway, your video is very interesting as usual! 😊

Hi Wheeler Scientific, Nice video. About your caffeine extraction, you could use a better technique than wet extraction "à la tea making" via a Soxhlet apparatus. That way boiling clean solvent into a closed loop recirculates, condenses and falls on top of your leaves; thus extracting a good quantity of leaves with a finite quantity of solvent. This can be done with CH2Cl2 or with H2O. Regards, PHZ (PHILOU Zrealone from the Science Madness forum)

so does crystallization occur in an 100% pure form?
@WheelerScientific
@WheelerScientific Ай бұрын
Chemists rarely say its 100% pure, so it recrystallization is just used to increase purity, and not all cases of recrystallization even come close to pure. As some chemicals undergo co-crystallization. Let me know if you have any other question or clarification.

Caffeine pills still have a bunch of other kinds of compounds inside of it so it’s not all 100% caffeine If we wanted to get that caffeine out, we’d have to go through a similar extraction, which would result in a higher yield of caffeine
