My first Burning Man was 1998. I just turned 18 and graduated high school. My girlfriend and her friends were going. I said. Sure. I'll go. Wow. Being a Chicago guy. I was completely unprepared. We slept in a moving van. I bought a 20 dollar army surplus sleeping bag. And a backpack of clothes. The drive took forever. But so worth it. I will always say Burning Man turned me into a man and welcomed me into my adult life.

As a long time Burner (who just returned by my 17th a few days ago), I endorse your thoughts- well done. Unlike some of the people who have added comments, I think Burning Man is one of the few things on earth that get better each year! The art is better, the mutant vehicles more incredible and the people from around the world that I meet are as nice as can be! See you in the dust next year!

Thanks for taking the time to post all your videos. As a first timer that is a photographer and my thoughts were to take my camera gear. Now I’m having second thoughts as I don’t want to ruin my gear or make someone feel uncomfortable. I can tell you from my experience eight times out of ten on a college campus woman love to have there photos taken in our studio. Men 50/50. As one that does portraits I love your eyes! I was thinking about a fire also but might have to run that by the group I’m going with. I have the forethought on how not to leave a mark but my concern would be the smoke that a fire can emit. Pickle back…tried it but it’s not for me! Safe travels to you and thanks for sharing your thoughts. Steve. aka “Oddjob”.

Leave your sequins, glitter, feathers and anything else that's likely to get destroyed in a day after you've been caught in a dust storm, because when all that stuffs hits the playa, it become moop and someone else's problem. If someone who works Resto(ration) sees you wearing feathers, be prepared to get a major confrontation from them. I only saw 2 this year, but they were epic. Secure your load before going home. Every year literally tons of garbage gets abandoned on the side of the roads because it falls off people's vehicles and they don't know or don't care, and again Resto has to take care of it. If you smoke, prepare yourself with a tin or bag or something to carry your butts. They are you're responsibility. And lastly, when you leave your camp, do your due diligence to "sweep" your camp to verify you have picked up after yourself. Be aware that not necessarily everyone else will do this, so when you exit the event, stay on the roads. f you drive across campgrounds, you risk running over rebar or something else of the like on your way out. Fixing a flat at Burning Man sucks, especially when you're trying to leave.

@projectpterodactyl817 жыл бұрын
It doesn't come out until closer to the Burning Man. It's way more fun to get the guide at the entry gate and look through it then. There's so much to do and see chances are you'll end up doing just a tiny fraction of whatever you plan to do from the guide though!!!

7:20 I think that is a really great rule. IMO, taking pictures takes you out of the moment. What is the point of experiencing burning man if you are going to do so in the third person? & especially since burning man is a place for self expression it is nice that people are considerate about getting photos that might end up on line. I wish people could be that considerate all the time. I can't wait to make my first trip to burning man!

A nice little video. Short, concise and non-judgmental. You might add that talking to a veteran burner is very helpful. It's saved my ass my first time. In Arizona, tequila and pickle juice is known as La Migra. I'll be interested to see what you have to say after this year's burn. Finally, for all the research you do and all the opinions you get, you will never even come close to understanding Burning Man unless you attend.

Also remember to pick up trash, alot of the burners aren't actually Leave No Trace and neither are the owners. Burning man itself is fun, but the people in charge are terrible and the rules don't apply to them. If you can, stay behind a day or two to pick up that trash. It's not actually leave no trace and you'll be surprised how much you'll pick up.

Nice. Thanks for the info. Only thing I'm slightly concerned with is that I fly from the UK to Burning man and then afterwards I have a couple of weeks on the west coast. Soooo, I need to bring EVERYTHING for the entire trip onto the Playa. I travel light, but that does still mean my DSLR camera, my phone passports and all the rest of the shiz. I've no issue with not using cameras and phones like you say, but will it be OK to just leave in my tent for the entire event and I mean for dust issues and potential thieves?
@projectpterodactyl817 жыл бұрын
I have the same problem this year too! I'm going to be doing a couple of weeks of travelling about afterwards. Anything electrical like your DSLR keep it in ziplock bags and keep them closed if you're not going to use them so they're nice and protected from the dust. Sadly there are some light fingered folk out there so it's always a risk that things might end up going missing, if you're bringing a vehicle you could lock them in there (but try and park in a shady spot so that all your electronics don't roast in the heat). If not then either try and hide them really well, maybe at the bottom of your bag of something with lots of clothes and stuff on top so they're hard to find or get too. Alternatively there's lots of storage places in Reno that offer storage and it's pretty cheap, I found one that does small storage lockers which are 5'x5' (I think that means feet because it says it's the size of a small closet?) for $30 for a month www.secureselfstorreno.com/large-storage-units if you go with something like that then you don't have to worry about your gear at all while you're at Burning Man but you'll have to head back Reno way to pick up your stuff afterwards. There's probably other storage and locker options as well, that's just one of the first I came across and it seems pretty reasonable. With your passport make sure if you decide to leave it in storage that you have some kind of other ID with you because some of the boozy camps like to check your ID before they'll bestow any drinks on you! Hope this helps :) Show less
@MarkMathewsMusic7 жыл бұрын
Pretty much what I thought to be honest. I fly into San Fran, get the bus into Burning man and then at the end get the bus to Reno, so the locker idea ain't gonna fly for me. Alas, I'll sort it out, I'm sure. Thank you so much for the info though. If I see you on the Playa I'll give you a high five and a hug to say thanks!!!

It's actually legal to take pictures of every single person at burning man without any permission although it could end bad but a person outside of burning man like say some guy walking down the street in new york on a public street is considered a private person permission must be attained but since burning man is a public event open to the public then someone who is there is considered a public person and in doing so forfeits there right to privacy. celebrities are all public people at all times same with elected officials and public workers etc. every one at a concert is a public person until they leave. you can not photograph a private person without consent.
