I just listened to the Yuja Wang - Michael Tilson Thomas performance of this concerto and came to realize that they have the energy in their performance that Ashkenazy - Boulez do not show in this performance. My criticism of this work was unwarranted because it needs the right performance. While I do not think #5 will ever replace the popularity of Prokofiev's 1-3 piano concertos, it is a well-written work that needs more performance.

I wish I could "warm up" to this concerto. It seems a repetition of his earlier piano concertos without the "spark". Great performance, but I could understand why pianists do not choose to perform it. His first three concertos are memorable and original! His other two, not so much!

A little bit too slow IMO!

What part is Boulez evaluating Prokofiev? Minimal. For Ashkenazy, he is a great senior in his country. The compromise is that Boulez analyzes Prokofiev to a minimum. To perform at that tempo. If he was young, it was an angry project. But Ashkenazy knows that this sound can only be given to Boulez.
