What is a prolactin test?
Prolactin (PRL) is a hormone found in the blood. Prolactin test is done to find out the amount of prolactin in the blood. This hormone is made in the pituitary gland, which is located just below the brain.
Why is a prolactin test done?
A doctor may recommend a prolactin test if the following symptoms occur:
For ladies
• Irregular menstruation
• Not having periods
• Milk in the breasts without pregnancy or nursing
• Extreme tenderness of breasts
• Vaginal dryness
• Signs of an enlargement of the pituitary gland called a prolactinoma due to a pituitary disorder

• Loss of desire for sex
• Difficulty getting an erection
• Breast tenderness or enlargement
• Milk in the breast
How is a prolactin test done?
• A few drops of blood of this test is enough. Some people may feel mild pain during this time.
They can get the result a few days after giving the blood sample.
What should be the normal prolactin level?
• The normal level of FSH during the menstrual cycle for pregnancy should be between 4.7 and 8
IU/L. This level should be without taking any contraceptive medicine.
