CRISPR could help rid of diseases like cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and even HIV and cancer. But many scientists, including Jennifer Doudna who is credited with developing the gene-editing technology, are calling for a moratorium on its use. Only on “CBS This Morning,” Doudna tells Norah O'Donnell why, for all its promise, CRISPR is surrounded by controversy.

Patents will have no effect on underground labs...and there will be thousands in a short time. The genie is out of the bottle.

Governments should own all patents that save lives automatically I think :/

Patents should not be required for this type of thing. A scientific database should be available for all Research Scientists who think they are about to discover or stumble into something profound......whether it is helpful to society, dangerous to society.......or in this case, a very real sense of both. First to log the discovery to the database, even if the other has notes dating back 10 months lying on his/her desk to prove otherwise......too bad. The global scientific community, in close collaboration with world governments......should be responsible for reaching unanimous agreement on the ethical, moral and safety challenges presented, as well as defining the processes of control which limit the danger of irreparable and uncontrolled spread of damage to humanity and all other life in which we share this planet. No-one owns the non-existent patent, no one individual, group or government can profit from it's ownership. If world governments deem the the benefits of the discovery far outweigh the risks where properly implemented........then it should receive world-wide funding based on a % of GDP. Downstream profit from the end-product(s), will recover the GDP offering and stay in keeping with the capitalist framework. A healthy country = a productive country = a large return on investment and a boost to the global economy. Filing patent and licensing to a select few with the deepest pockets........is one of the deepest concerns in my mind. Not only can we edit our config files...... those config files are passed to all of our children.
