Who among these old timers could improve beyond below average defenders: Ariza, Augustin, Bazemore, Ellington, Howard, Melo, LeBron, Westbrook? AD shot 18% from 3-pointers this season. But from Brooklyn's perspective, I don't like when people say "they missed on Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown" because we don't know if they would have drafted the same players. On draft night Brown was a bad pick for some analysts, they said he was a 5th pick at best, worse than Kris Dunn and Dragan Bender. Tatum was fine but maybe worse than Josh Jackson and trading down and not getting Fultz was a bad move according to some analysts too. So what I'm trying to say is that this should be stated as this, the Nets' traded picks turned into the 17th pick in 2014, the 3rd pick in 2016, the 1st pick in 2017 and the 8th pick in 2018.

And as far as injuries go the Lakers had it easy if Lebron and Russ were the main guys. If you’re hinging your season on AD being healthy, then that’s a really bad sign of where the organization is headed cause AD will always be a liability due to his injuries

I didn’t think they’d be as bad as they were, but I didn’t see them going any further than a 1st round exit. You can’t just slap together a bunch of aging stars and expect it to work. The super team era is slowly coming to an end. Look at the past 3 champions the raptors had kawhi and really good surrounding pieces, the lakers had AD and lebron and no other stars, and the bucks last year carried by giannis. The league is slowly transitioning to having better role players rather than stacking your team with the best talent you can find.

I was around for those late 90's Barkley Pippen Rockets, so when I heard Lakers got Westbrick, I immediately got Vietnam flashbacks to those 90s Barkley Pippen Rockets, and I knew they weren't going anywhere. Barkley was the problem, they traded half a championship team away to get him. Westbrick was just a bad choice period. He fumbles the ball too much, he always has, he just used to make up for it with hustle, as his athleticism is fading so are his benefits. And Russ literally threw a game away all by himself in the Bubble when Rockets faced Lakers, it even looked like he got paid off to throw it, it was THAT bad. But if you know who he is, that's just who he is... So one huge thing you forgot to mention with the Nets was that their starting center and probably the best player on the roster at that point, Brook Lopez, missed pretty much the whole season with a foot injury. A lot of people would think "oh it's just Brook Lopez" but he was easily a top 5 center in the league at that point. I see this as a huge factor in why they were so disappointing because let's be conservative and say they'd win 6 more games if he didn't get hurt. That would put them at 50 wins and the third seed. Still slightly disappointing but no one would think to put them in this list if that were the case. Also, both Marcus Smart and Jayson Tatum were not drafted with the picks involved in that trade. The Celtics drafted Smart with their own pick and drafted a nobody (James Young) with the pick they got from the Nets that year. And then they traded that other Nets pick for the pick that would become Tatum, but that original pick was used to take Markelle Fultz.

I honestly think the 2013 Nets were a bigger disappointment. I remember a not insignificant amount of people saying that the Nets were a superteam and fleeced the Celtics at the time. No one thought that way about the Westbrook trade. Most people were unsure of Westbrook's fit but were optimistic that the sheer talent would work out. No one thought they were favorites to win the title but most people did think they were solid contenders. Think people are overstating the expectations that people actually had on the Lakers in hindsight.

sometimes 2 stars don't play well together. Russ is essentially lebron but a bit less efficient and 5 inches shorter. There's only 1 ball, so you can't just put 2 lebrons on the same team and expect it to work. Westbrook, without lebron playing averages 22/8/8 on 52/41/70 shooting, on about a 25 game sample size.

I knew the Celtics trading their core was good from the start, just because KG was super injury prone down the stretch, and the fact Celtics would blow a lot of leads in the playoff's and regular season after their finals run. I feel like that was a sign of their age catching up to them.

I pretty much laughed at the idea they were gonna be projected to come out of the west before the season even started. I had them at best as a 4th seed even with LeBron, and hover somewhere around 6-7th seed. Not even in my wildest expectations did I think that 2 games after the ASG break looking at their remaining games did I find myself wondering if they'd even make the 8th seed. Then in a month they're the 11th seed. Lmao, could not have guessed they'd fail that hard.

Yeah 90's pretty easy to figure why only so few teams won and Boston and The Lakers won like 30 seasons total combined , so there can't be that many older era seasons where a team failed hard. I feel like The Kings one year with Webber I think were stacked or maybe the oppsite and they made it further then thought.
