Simpler answer. Retcon. like they did online. Normally they were just references but now its retconned. Thats what I think at least.

Rockstar seems to think that if GTA 3D and HD were connected, then there has to be explanation for why the maps are so different. They don't want to come with an explanation, so they just say they're not connected.

Yeah, i like this explaination better. It's because of the maps. Some story lines are true or canon in GTA 5, but rockstar only want give simple reason about why the maps are not the same

they could've just say something similar to how zelda games did it, same place but different map simply because that's more fun, because each map serve different purposes, in gameplay terms they are different but narratively the same place

I am convinced it's because the maps are different. The way the settings are so different probably wasn't consistent enough for them. Maintaining a certain kind of vision and consistency is something they consider very important. Look at the RDR1 and 2 maps, they can be connected almost like puzzle pieces.

I’ve personally never really got the “3D and HD games are different timelines” thing. Like one of the other comments say, it can just be retcons. Technology has obviously advanced between PS2 era and now, leading to the same areas being depicted vastly different. I personally feel like that’s fine but others seem to not like that idea.

Love Fist is in GTA Vice City and GTA 5 as well. Willie, the bassist of the band, makes a physical appearance in both games. There have also been references to them in GTA San Andreas, GTA 4, GTA Chinatown Wars, and GTA Online too

Theory of multiverses links all games I theorise there is a version of CJ in GTA 5 but we never see him and there is 2 versions of Lazlow 3d and HD

The 3D era references are obscure in HD because those stories are in the past so Rockstar can focus on new stories instead, that's how I've always interpreted it. You might see an old action movie trailer using GTA: Vice City footage for example, but everyone's forgotten about those old days, they're just memories to the modern thugs of HD era. In gta 4 you can find graffiti that says RIP to all the 3D era protagonists, as if to imply they all died or moved on from crime to live more peacefully. I believe the same happened to Niko Bellic, who quit crime after the story of 4. Red Dead books also exist in GTA5 but they are either cowboy fiction or classic vintage stories nobody talks about anymore.

They're just references and easter eggs. If 5 and SA were connected then 5 would be connected to all the 3d games because SA is connected to all the 3d games and that also means sa would be connected to all the hd games because 5 is connected to all the hd games. If there were tons of widespread references throughout 4 and 5, you could argue connection - but some lil references to CJ and his gang isn't enough.

GTA 3 also implies GTA VC and GTA SA because they are basically glorified DLCs to GTA 3 since they all use the same engine and aren’t numbered titles.

I believe there are 2 timelines. What we played was 1 timeline because we do it right. An example is how we get ALL the gang territories in GTA SA, how GTA SA has an ambiguous ending that gives you that vibe that you're able to do what you want. Timeline 2 is what happens as a plot and events outside our control. In GTA V we kill the main character of lost and damned, we couldn't control it. GTA V also confirmed that CJ became a CEO, and Sweet stayed in the ghetto and became crazy alone. That's just my theory tho
