I think if they really want to help disadvantaged students then the evaluation criteria shouldn't be race/ethnicity it should be more so socioeconomic. I know plenty of disadvantaged Asian students who performed well but are subjected to the same discrimination because of their race which is counterproductive.

@@lynnnoyes6398 your comparing the individual treatment of race and gender with governmental discrimination. So if you get robbed by a criminal, your neighbor is required to pay for the damages? Give me one actually evidence that the government is discriminating Blacks and Latinos in a systematic way. As far as I know, they get treated better with Affirmative Action that gives them 300/1600 point advantage over Asians in college admission.
@lynnnoyes63984 жыл бұрын
@@aliju4837 I was not aware of that. I thought that the socioeconomic issue was the main part of affirmative action. I completely agree that race alone is a mistaken criteria. It's a complex problem with no simple solution. How could we help compensate for discrimination in a person's youth and yet not disadvantage another person?
@lynnnoyes63984 жыл бұрын
@@xcqematic1 I did not mention the government--you did. Universities are not ruling bodies of the government and are not entirely supported by public money. As for the government discriminating, throughout our history it has done little else. For example, it treated Asian groups, especially Japanese citizens, horrifically. Minorities have consistently been victims of voter suppression and extreme gerrymandering, which is still going on. As for your criminal comparison, why are you using that as an example of students who get special treatment through affirmative action? Do you consider them criminals? Your whole analogy is silly and has nothing to do with affirmative action. I don't think affirmative action is ideal, but we are dealing with decades of denying certain groups equal opportunities. If we help member of those groups get a higher education, then they displace other people. It's not fair, but I cannot think of any solution that would be.
@tencorgmail40754 жыл бұрын
This is not a controversial issue in the United States: If affirmative action has only 43% support in California, it probably has somewhere in the ballpark of 30% support nationwide. This is basically reverse discrimination, and it does nothing to address the roots of education inequality and it in a way just encourages it.

Old school liberal here. John Rawls wrote eloquently about the need to address social inequality with "blinders on" to race, creed, gender, orientation. His fear, group identity, demands for equal outcomes, the hysteria and discord it would create as we de-evolved into tribes would ensure our failure at helping those in need. His call for a common good approach has been discarded and in it place groups arose making demands, seat at the table and entitlement empowered by their moral supremacy, entrenched in their hatred for those deemed privileged and devoted in their blind ideology of helping themselves at expense of the common good which they deride as vestiges of the old white patriachy ruling class. Affirmative action has mutated from a progressive ideal into a treasured entitlement that for the common good should be dismantled. The virtues of a pluralistic diverse modern republic should not be coopted by petty petulance of an unrelenting sub culture that speaks of justice but acts in its own self interest.
