A great bit of information One of the things about the Rustoleum that people have a problem with is it does not go well with other brands so as long as you keep it together it works well. Liquitex basics are my favorite paint for most things.

For weathering with water-based paint, add a drop or two of Finish Jet-Dry Rinse Aid, from the dishwasher detergent aisle. It acts as a wetting agent to pull your weathering paint into all the little panel lines and divots and scratches. Shout out to Jeremy at Black Magic Craft for that tip.

Brian, awesome Geekification episode. I love the clarity of not just the paints you use, but how and why you choose them...to include specificity on paints used based on scale of project. I feel confident with spray paints, but the air brush seems intimidating. I have watched a lot of videos about them...it seems there is so much contention on use, brand, mixtures, parts, that it seems the only way to learn is spend a few hundred bucks and experiment. Again, thanks as always for taking complicated things and breaking them down into simple themes with context.

I started using the Vallejo Metal Color paints last year and I love them. It's hard to beat that Alclad look, but I'll settle for the difference if it means I can use acrylics. They look amazing coming out of an airbrush, but they also brush on very well. They're thin and flow well, so it sorta self levels. The brush strokes really aren't an issue. My only beef is that no one near me sells them, and their (usually 3rd party) price on Amazon seems to be climbing. They were about $9 when I first found them, but now they're about $13-15 each.

The alclad clear does change the color and reflectivity of paint. We checked it with a laser scanner for paint matching. I had said it for years and people said no, i paint museum models for a few museums. I also painted a few for the us government. It changes it slightly. I prefer to use a clearcoat made for woodworking named varthane. It does a very good job. Dont put anything over metallics though, they get changed by everything. 3m makes a good clearcoat made for touchups and it is the best. It is a 2k clear so it doesnt last long. Theres a german company that makes a chrome that looks like real chrome. We painted a full sized 3d printed bumper for a dusenberg that was in a display and used that paint, it looked original so close that jay leno was asking where we found a bumper because he needed one for one of his projects. It was that good.

RLM 26 is actually an aircraft camouflage paint used by the German Luftwaffe in WW2. RLM stands for Reichsluftfahrt Ministerium which was in charge of development and production of all aircraft developed, designed and built in Germany at that time. I love Valejo paints. I recently started building models again and found out that my favorite paints were no longer available and I searched everywhere for replacements. Valejo was the overall winner.

Hi Brian, what about the top coat you use ? do you always put one or not ? like spay lacquer or clear finish ? thx
@TheSmugglersRoom3 жыл бұрын
I do typically apply a top coat. I mentioned the Allclad sealer as a good option, it if you don’t have an airbrush you can use the Rustoleum sealers, they have a variety of finishes; gloss, semi-gloss, and satin. I use them more often than anything else.
@PaganWizard3 жыл бұрын
11:00 To get THEEE ABSOLUTE BEST chrome look out of that Alclad chrome paint, is to first, cover it with the Alclad clear gloss paint. This is actually going to dull the finish a little bit, because it does not dry to a nice smooth finish. If you were to look at it under strong magnification, you'd see that it looks rather bumpy, which diffuses the chrome finish. Your next step, is going to be the expensive step. Use USC SprayMax 2K Glamour High Gloss Aerosol Clear, this is a 2 part acrylic spray paint in a rattle can that costs $24 and up depending where you buy it. The easiest place to find it is on Amazon. This is going to give you the bright chrome look out of that Alclad paint that you were looking for. A word or six of of caution about 2K paint. Make sure that you apply a very light coat at first, followed by a second coat a little heavier, followed by an EVEN third wet coat. If you end up with a run DO NOT TRY TO FIX IT UNTIL THE CLEAR COAT IS COMPLETELY DRY!! Then use a new single edge razor blade, or a new X-acto blade, to scrape any runs. If you have a speck of dust or a bug, gently remove it, then, using a clean cotton swab, dab a tiny drop of clear coat over the "hole" and let it merge into the void. Also, once you puncture the internal can, you only have about 2 hours before the product solidifies in the can. The very short shelf life once this paint is mixed, is what makes it so expensive, so it's probably a really good idea to line up at least a few projects that you want to spray before mixing the can. This is hands down the best clear coat I have ever used. BTW, you CAN NOT apply 2K paint directly to the Alclad chrome paint, it will destroy it, ask me how I know, but it won't harm the Allclad clear coat........I know, it's very (science.......not fiction) strange.

Ok I'm making a prop for my friend for Christmas. Its a container/organizer, that's gonna be a weathered silver with a black Imperial logo. But I can't figure out how to make the stencil. The cutouts of the logo are the part that's giving me trouble. The only thing I could come up with so far is to glue the cutouts of the stencil to the box with a glue stick, and simply peel them up once the paint is dry (just like you do with stained glass). Any tips?
@TheSmugglersRoom Жыл бұрын
You could use the glue stick, but I might suggest using a spray adhesive. The key is getting a good seal on all the edges so the paint doesn’t bleed under the edges. Another great tip is to lay down your stencil and then spray it with a clear sealer first. Let that dry. You do this because it seals the edges. Then when you spray your finish color you won’t have any bleed through around the edges.

Have you ise Craft Acrylic paint
@ProjectCambrian3 жыл бұрын
Artist's Tip for Acrylic paint saving. Be it in a Tube or a Tub, WIPE the Rim and LID of Excess Paint after Each Use. A little bit of paint left in the threads can make opening jars and caps difficult or even Break the caps and lids trying to get them off. Also for TUBS. Have a piece of Plastic Wrap to seal your paint tubs with. Sure you could just slap it over the top and put on the lid, but That WON'T save your paint as it Leaves a pocket of Air inside. That air will make a skin out of the top layer of paint. PRESS your Plastic Wrap, a plastic shopping bag or even garbage bag plastic, cut to size will do, Right Down and Onto the Paint leaving No Air between the plastic and paint. As you run out of paint there's more room for air than paint in the tub. Without protection, the air dry effect will be Equal in Paint as to Air. So if your tub of paint is Half Empty, then without the plastic wrap that other half left Will ALL DRY OUT. This has happened to me a Bunch after not painting for a bit and moving a few times. Crack open tubs to find it's all dried out Yet lids were sealed. Leftover air inside dried out all the paint. I adopted the plastic wrap for my paint tubs and they can last and be Fresh for Years. Great tip if working on a tight budget.
