Propagating Succulents From Stems (Easy)

I just rescued a ghost plant from my late great aunts house, she had a ton of them going wild like this outside (South GA, I grabbed it the day before thanksgiving) and i had NO clue how to go about cleaning the mess that this guy has grown in! Did you just pop all of the little heads you cut off into dirt? I'm afraid to lose the pups and big pretty pieces I do have.

Thank you for the great comment! You can cut the pups off and let the cut dry for about a day then just plant them in dirt. I love it when these grow wild!

@@thepottedsucculent4290 thank you so much for the quick reply oh my!! I just cut off all of my rosettes and am trying to dig through this mess of a pot to pull out the rotted roots. Do You think the bare stems will be okay with the mix of rotted ones? I’m pulling as much as I can but I’m afraid to disturb the roots too much 😅

Hi! Just came back to say my succulent propagations came out wonderfully! My little guys that came from the leaves are really stemmy though, should that be a concern? They have developed little roots and are about 1-2 inches tall! My stems I cut from haven’t done anything though

That's great Keri! If propagations are leggy from the Leaves then I found they did not have enough sun.

Also Keri there is no concern... it's normal for ghost plants to start out leggy....they are beautiful and they do what they want!

The stems that you cut the rotting parts away, did you just stick them back in the soil or do you have to dry it out first? Thanks

You can replant the clippings into soil and they will grow roots for you! Just make sure that they are fully callused(scabbed)before watering them, it can cause them to get infected and rot.

So, do not trim or repot during the Summer (in North Florida)? I don't want to kill my beautiful plants, but they are outgrowing the pot.

Thank you for the comment. You can definitely repot, just put them back in the same environment after. They are very resilient!

When I propagate, my pups are elongated. I have tried putting under the lights and then outside and they still are elongated. What should I do?

Hello, thank you for your question! I always find lights are never enough, always the last resort for me if you live in a climate that has frost. You will have to gradually introduce them to sun and then leave them there permanently. If they are already elongated you won't be able to reverse it until the new growth.

Nothing, they just grow like this naturally, especially if you neglect it without pruning it, which is why they look good in a hanging basket.

I have tried everything possible they don't root in soil. I have wasted money on clonex nothing. They just dry out without roots. Watching my cuttings dry and die. Ideas.??

Hmm, I would say try water propagation! Cut and let the cutting dry for a day, then stick in clean water. Change water every week until roots appear, then plant in soil. Keep me posted!

Thank you for the question. If I cut it all down it would take a long time to grow out. The growth of a succulent stem is slow, but propagation of new succulents on an existing stem is very quick and will produce more succulents from room on the length.
