"My dad says that butane is a bastard gas" -Bobby Hill

Propane is cheaper, the butane is more compact. Until I tested the stove with butane I did not know witch one would be cheaper in usage, meaning if butane boiled water faster than propane, it might make up for some of the cost difference. I knew going in that propane is a better fuel, but I wanted to know by how much. Thanks for the comment!
@bicanoo_magic34524 жыл бұрын
If you haven't figured it by now. Butane is waaay hotter than Propane. So its a smaller cylinder and you use less of it. It's also safer as it is lighter than air. LPG is heavier so it gathers on the floor. (Dangerous)

Butane is better suited to warmer temperatures and countries above 5c 41f in places like Mediterranean Sea locations and warmer parts of the world like The Middle East Africa and Asia because it will fail to function below 5c and can even stop working. Benefits of butane gas are quicker heat up time, slightly higher heat output than propane and clean burning. Butane can, however be used quite safely indoors with mobile cabinet heaters and mobile living flame heaters such as we have in the United Kingdom and it can also be safely used indoors to fuel hobs ovens and cookers following the correct conversion of the appliances to butane and propane operation using the LPG jets supplied with the appliances first or if the appliances are LPG ready to connect straight to a suitable supply. NB do not attempt to use natural gas appliances with butane / propane cylinders without the proper conversion to this fuel first for two reasons, firstly the pressures between LPG and Natural Gas are entirely different, and secondly the performance would be poorer ie yellow tipping of the flames and sooting of oven walls, kettles, pans and utensils. Propane works down to -45c and is more suited generally because of this advantage hence why it finds favour in colder international countries like Canada Greenland Russia America and Scandinavia. It also works satisfactorily on many appliances but is contained in cylinders at a much higher pressure than butane and because of this, they should NEVER be stored indoors, however it is suited to permanent outdoor installation where it can feed fixed appliances in the home such as cookers hobs ovens / living flame, flueless and conventional radiant fires, hot water systems plus central heating using a 47 kg twin pack propane cylinder installation and changeover valve or as many propane cylinders as you may require with a multi changeover valve system. Flueless LPG fires don't require a chimney as the combustion products are fed straight through a catalytic converter transforming them to safe harmless byproducts which are safe, which, as long as the room has adequate natural ventilation circulation, as most living rooms do around doors and windows, then there's no worries and another incredible thing is that flueless LPG fires emit more of the heat into the room as they don't need a chimney and get incredibly warm and because of this fact, you cannot safely install a flat panel TV directly above one of these fires because of the heat emitted causing possible melting and damage to the set.

Propane is slightly better than butane at room temp but propane is way better than butane at cool temps.

As a camper, butane is much lighter to carry than propane. Cost wise propane is 20 times cheaper than butane. I'd personally carry a 16 oz. (2 pound total weight including canister) propane and cook for a week (5 hours) at $2.50 a canister. V/s $25 for 8 oz of butane that will last for an hour.
@clkindred9 жыл бұрын
Nick Hersheys Yep, if you plan on needing to cook many meals, propane is the way to go, it might also be lighter to carry the green propane tank if it takes three or four butane canisters to match it's cooking power. Who charges $25 for 8oz of butane though? That's VERY expensive!
@nickhersheys27069 жыл бұрын
clkindred Amazon: Search "Primos Primus P-220793 230gm Power Gas Canister, 8-Ounce" Price: $22.99 + $5.34 shipping.
Nick Hersheys I want to be boiling and cooking at higher altitudes and colder temperatures than butane will allow. The mixed types burn off the propane first then comes the butane of the mix. All three have identical BTU/ounce of fuel. Determine where you're going, how much weight you are willing to load and how much you are willing to spend. Then comes the stove ....
@jamesaritchie17 жыл бұрын
You need to find a new market for butane. I pay four dollars for four 8.8 ounce cans of pure butane. That's cheaper than I can get propane anywhere.

Butane is actually superior to propane from an energy stand point. So this video is the opposite of what should be expected.

You are right. butane: 52.2 Megajoules/gram. propane: 50.3 kilojoules/gram. (wikipedia) I guess he is using more propane in the same amount of time.
@greg773895 жыл бұрын
@@dave14410 That difference is negligible though. Only reasons to use butane over propane is cost (assuming it's cheaper) and portability due to the tanks being lighter, but only in warm weather since you can't use butane in the cold. For household usage and trips in the mountains/cold environments, propane is the logical choice. Propane also is better for long term storage.
@PK-xe6sm7 жыл бұрын
Buthane is way cheaper, actually. At least in my part of the world. The only reason for using propane over buthane is that it boils at about -40 degrees Celsius(compared to -2 when using buthane), so you can use it in the mountains.
@jamesaritchie17 жыл бұрын
Butane is cheaper everywhere, if you aren't buy one ounce containers. There are pretty easy ways of using butane at even the coldest temperatures. It's not the air temp that matters, it's the canister temp.

Quick note: Butane canisters are not really light either. I guess butane canisters are aluminum vs the heavier propane metal (iron something) canister. A propane canister weighs twice as much as the net propane in it. A butane canister weighs one and half times the net butane in it. For example, a 16 oz (1 pound) propane weighs 2 pounds. A 16 oz (1 pound) butane weighs 1.5 pounds. So the weight (as a backpacker myself) is out of the question. Considering the cost factor, Propane is the winner !
@boogerking74116 жыл бұрын
Propane's pressure is 4x than butane so it has thicker can to contain the pressure
@jamesaritchie17 жыл бұрын
By itself, boil time is one of the more meaningless stats. Boil time alone doesn't tell you how much fuel you're using, and that matters more than how long it takes to boil the water. Also, not everyone is content with only eating meals you make with boiling water. I'm not. I like to cook meals, and eat real food that isn't freeze dried. Butane burners are usually much better for this because of their design, but they boil water slower for the same reason.

Propane works better in the cold than Butane because Propane stays in liquid form whereas Butane tends to solidify thats why Butane is used much more indoors. Butane is much cheaper than Propane, not sure if it is over in the US & here in the UK Butane comes in a blue cannister/tank where Propane comes in an orange/red cannister/tank.

@Izakokomarixyz9 жыл бұрын
Stevo 1971 I thought that the reason was that butane stays in liquid form in the freezing winter, whereas propane still boils below freezing temperatures...
@Paul-mz6ss7 жыл бұрын
Ha Ha Ha - Butane solidifying, I love it. Butane freezes at -138 Degrees C. (Propane -188 Degrees C) You are confusing the freezing and boiling point of each of the liquids. The boiling points are... Butane -1 Degree C Propane -42 degrees C Boiling point is the temperature at which the vapor pressure of a liquid is equal to the pressure of the atmosphere on the liquid, equal to 100°C for water at sea level. (In layman's terms boiling point is the temperature where the liquid turns from a liquid to a gas). Also a liquid at high pressure has a higher boiling point than when that liquid is at atmospheric pressure. So this would also have to be taken into consideration.

Which burns cleaner? My experience is that butane leaves a lot more soot.
@clkindred6 жыл бұрын
I found under good conditions they are both very clean. However the butane suffers from poor gas pressure when cold, resulting in the burner not working correctly, leaving a slightly dirtier flame.
@anthonyperkins75566 жыл бұрын
Butane is best suited to temperatures above 5c 41f because it becomes useless under 5c. If you are operating on butane at normal temperatures, there should be no soot. If you have soot issues in normal temperatures, the gas / air mix probably needs adjustment until there are predominantly blue flames.
